Essential Elements of Public Speaking, The (3rd Edition) (MySpeechLab Series)

Not my first choice for a basic book
Very politically correct, and thus helpful if you plan on speaking to a cross-cultural audience. I had it for an introductory public-speaking college course (undergrad), and found it too heavy on PC and not heavy enough on basic public-speaking skills, an overall frustrating experience.

As an instructor
I have been teaching Speech Communication for over 17 years. I have taught a few other communication courses. It is not very often that Professors get to brag about a textbook. I recently had an opprtunity to visit one-on-one with the author. He is the "real deal" and so is the book! Long on substance and short on fluff. This is a book the students can truly learn from and one any teacher ...

The Sixth and Ever Better Edition
You can't say that the audience-centered concept used in this book was pioneered by them. After all, in the first paragraph the authors give credit to Aristotle for defining the elements of speechmaking as 'of speaker, subject and person addresed - it is the last one, the herer, that determines the speaker's end and object.' The first edition of this book, about 15 years ago, set the tone for ...

Public speaking made easy.
For most people, public speaking isn't something that comes easy. In fact, most people dislike giving speeches (putting it mildly). I was one of those people that didn't come easy for. But, after careful studying of the tips/techniques to give a good speech, ways to analyze your audience, and many other concepts, I was able to give successful speeches, with the confidence that being well ...

Public Speaking
I used the text book for a "public speaking" course at California State University Hayward campus. The book does an excellent job of taking the reader through the steps in preparing public speeches. It contains numerous examples of speeches. The main thing I felt that the author did was to teach the reader a the step by step process of picking a topic, preparing an outline and delivering the ...

Very nice
The book is very informative. It has cheatsheets printed on the back cover. There is also information to help you with your first speech because the author realized that speeches would be prepared before the student could finish reading the book.

Presentations in Everyday Life offers students taking the Intro to Public Speaking course a briefer, more practical approach, focusing on the real-life communication contexts in which students will find themselves. In addition to prompting the text's modular organization and hands-on approach, suggestions from practicing public speakers resulted in the inclusion of such unique material as logistics and mediated and online presentations. They ...

Communication style requires options
An earlier reviewer decries the liberal leanings of this text. A college introductory course introduces options in skills available for human communication. This text provides students exercises that help identify their current communication style, the answers to the questions then invite discovery and awareness. Once the reader is aware, the opportunity to examine the communication framework ...
