Very useful... just very useful.
How come I did not comment on this book before? Its been some time since I got it, read it, and used it! That's what this book is... useful, very useful. We had to optimize a DB, specially a huge table with millions of numbers and managed to go from tens of seconds to milisecs. I would say it was.. well, very useful;)

Beginner's Luck
Wouldn't it be great if your first study guide on databases covered database theory in general, your own favorite database server in particular, and also the ins and outs of SQL? Alan Beaulieu's Learning SQL comes as close as possible to covering exactly those three topics, and it covers them with clarity, completeness, enthusiasm, and scrupulous attention to the reader's needs. When I say ...

This book was exactly what I ordered, excellent condition, and great delivery time! While I have not read the entire book year, it is exactly what I need to get started with PHP. Excellent Book!!
I have worked on Microsoft BI platform for a long time. I wanted to try out pentaho... but so many dependencies like Linux, MySQL, Tomcat etc were too much for me to handle. In my last attempt I couldn't even install the product. However this book is so well written that even a person like me who doesn't know an iota of Linux/MySQL/Tomcat/Java was able to install and get up and running with a ...

Other uses for this book
Majority of the cookbooks cater to seasoned programmers so they can quickly lookup a solution without having to reinvent the wheel. However, this particular cookbook can also be used by less experienced programmers as part of "learning by example" methodology. After learning the sql basics, I had decided to purchase this text. I would read the problem statement and then try to implement the ...

Perfect Book - Every PHP programmer must have this book!
PHP and MySQL Web Development (4th Edition) I am a self taught programmer and I always felt there was more to PHP than i was getting from other PHP books I had.So recently, I embarked on a month long search of a 'good' PHP book. I am glad to tell everyone else that I have finally found that book. This is right here, this book doesn't make assumptions about your programming skills level - It ...

SELECT Lynn Beighley's SQL
Lynn, I was and I still am totally fascinated by your style. People learn in different, sometimes multiple ways. Some only have to hear something said, others can stare at a written page, others still have to say it aloud. And then there are people like me who have to read it, highlight it, have hand written notes in the margin and then, type up the high points which once again get the ...

Much more than expected
This book clearly covers stored procedure programming well. Of course, it goes over basic syntax and provides examples, but it also goes much farther than that. This book discusses optimization of MySQL queries regardless of the use - in or out of sprocs. It also did a very nice job of discussing the use of cursors - the ability to iterate through the results of a query without being pelted ...

I have been a J2EE Architect/developer using DB2/ORACLE for many years. I always feel that I am lacking in DB so I thought lets do DB certification and I chose mySQL. I have been using mySQL at home for my learning and in this book I found many interesting things that I was unaware. The book has every detail of topic that I need to prepare for the exam.

Very valuable addition to my collection
This is a great book, it covers a ton of material in total but does not totally cover anyone particular subject. I will not list all the chapters another reviewer did that already, but I have over 30 books on php and this one was on my wishlist here on amazon for a long time. This book does have examples and they are working examples if you manually type them and follow along. The examples ...

Great Book
This book is great. The text doesn't assume you have any advanced knowledge of anything. This is actually my second MySQL book. The first book didn't explain how to install and setup MySQL and then it didn't explain how to use the keyline MySQL monitor. So I was stuck after the first chapter. "Learning MySQL" was a real life saver. You're given actual examples to follow along with and they ...

Excellent Quick Reference for MySQL RDBMS
Reese hits a solid triple to start the inning off and scores easily on the wild pitch thrown by the reader who says that the GRANT section is wrong. This book works easily and appropriately at your deskside. I found the book to be a very simple, easy-to-navigate reference text that presents the most important aspects of MySQL in the quickest, most logical manner. It is very easy to thumb ...

Best Backup Book I've Seen
When I picked up this text, I kind of expected it to be a bit sparse in some areas. After all, it's an ambitious book. With individual chapters on every database from DB2, Oracle and Sybase to MySQL, Postgres and SQL Server. In addition he also covers OS backups on Solaris, Linux, AIX, HP-UX, and Mac OS X. Preston though, succeeds, and succeeds with flying colors. What I was struck by ...

Kevin Yank, Build Your Own Database-Driven Web Site with PHP and MySQL (Sitepoint, 2009) I have just finished my first read through Kevin Yank's Build Your Own Database-Driven Web Site with PHP and MySQL. SQL reference source
I was looking for a small SQL command resource and this fit the bill perfectly. The O'Reily series has never failed to hit the mark as a first class reference source. This book is small and pocketable and has provided me with the support I was looking for. I highly recommend this small powerful reference book!
