The Darkness Is Light Enough: The Field Journal of a Night Naturalist

Chris Ferris

A must-have book, especially for those who love badgers!
Chris Ferris (a nom de plume) is very possibly Britain's best naturalist writer. This book distills four years of her experience as observer and, eventually, protectress of the wildlife in the woods near her English country home. As she becomes closer to the badgers, owls and foxes -- many of which develop an extraordinary trust in her -- Ferris also has several dangerous run-ins with ...

Wonderful front cover painting. Incisive documentary
A must-see cover design by Terence Kelleher. This one feature sets the book in a whole world of its own. I challenge anyone to read the contents, and not cry, and not consider their outlook changed.

Real life on a tin can (destroyer) in the South Pacific.
Orvill Raines was my friend. We were together from the time the ship was commissioned 4/3/44 until he died on April 6, 1945 at Okinawa. Ray Ellen (his wife) kept these letters and when I first contacted her in 1990 she mentioned them to me and offered them to the HOWORTH VETS. We published them at our own expense. Williams McBride took the War Diary AND Letters/Memories and completed the ...

Excellent!
This book was outstanding...I couldn't put it down...literatly. I had to keep reading and I loved every word of it! Corrie discovers God in a much more personal way and it gives an in-depth look and brings much more meaning to the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln was made more personal, and Corrie related to him in a way I've never heard spoken. An above excellent book...a must-read!

Fantastic Tales
This book is a selection of the choicest tales from the Thousand and One Nights. The translator, N.J. Dawood, also translated the Koran for the Penguin Classics series. Dawood explains in the introduction that the first of these tales appeared in a written form around 850 C.E., in a book called, "A Thousand Legends." More tales, of lesser quality, were added over the years until an anonymous ...

Buy this book in hardcover, not as a board book!
We got a couple of books in the Dinosaurs series as board books from my coworker, and overall my daughter (22 months at the time of this review) liked them, but the hardcovers are simply gorgeous with large, detailed and brilliant pictures. I got this book in the library, and Anna wanted to read it several times in a row (not to mention every night since then). I plan to assemble the whole series ...

Excellent Translation
Excellent translation, from the oldest known manuscript of the tales. True to the original, it captures not just the letter, but the spirit of the text. Clearly, Haddawy is a talented writer on his own accord. A very good place to discover Arab culture as well.

A gorgeous book --- heart-wrenching and inspiring.
This book is for anyone immersed in the human condition, waging a war internally and silently stuggling externally. Galeano's collection of thoughts and essays and stories stirs the emotions of the reader and forces them to consider the entirety of the Latin American canon of literature as a formidable one. It encompasses genres such as autobiography, biography, testimony, prose, and short ...

A POWERFUL STORY!
This book was given to me by a dear friend who has lived through the devastation of losing a loved one to alcoholism. While reading the book, I was finally able to see the disease through the eyes of my friend. This is a powerful story of unconditional love that conjures up a whirlwind of emotions for the reader. Excellent!

...And a good day's read!
This fantastic collection of Humphries' satirical monolgues spanning over three decades is essential reading for his fans. See the birth of Mrs Everage as a 1956 housewife offering accomodation to Olympian athletes and read her early tips on interior decoration. Relive the time when Sandy Stone was a working husband having a 'bit of strife parking the vehicle' on a Saturday morning and witness ...

Inside look.........
Every American should read this little gem of a book. It is written by a young man who chose to join the Marine Corps and go to war for his country. It is insightful and is as much about the war raging in Seth as it is the war raging in Iraq. His "enemies within" were as great as the enemies he was fighting against in the desert of Iraq. I believe the majority of our men and women in today's ...

Wonderful Journal for Self-Discovery
I had this book for three years and had not used it. While in India for one month, I decided to give the book a try. It was the best journal to write in at the best time possible. It helped to change my life. I absolutely love it! The questions are thought provoking and there are a few things that you might not want to write about. You will find some of the questions a little tough to answer, but ...

Fantastic glimpse into the life of Lovecraft!
This must surely be one of the most fascinating books published on Lovecraft in a very long time. The book contains nearly all of the correspondance between him and Donald Wandrei, a horror/sci-fi writer in his own right, as well as upcoming co-founder of Arkham House. What makes this volume particular fascinating, is that it not only contains Lovecrafts letters, but also Wandreis, making this ...
