La Grammaire à l'oeuvre Text3 reviews
John Barson

Harcourt Brace College Publishers, 1995

Excellent, mais cher.
I was assigned this book in one of my grad level French classes and have used it as a reference again and again. It's an excellent resource for advanced students (since it's in French, it's probably not appropriate for "les débutants"). It explains all grammar points in more detail and includes more exceptions than any other French grammar book I've found. One of my favorite features is the ...

Martha Stewart's Hors d'Oeuvres Handbook75 reviews
Martha Stewart

Clarkson Potter, 1999

Excellent
I got this book out from the library so many times that I had to buy it. I like the fact that every dish has a photograph so that you can see the how the finished result is meant to look, plus there is a wide range of simple through to fancy hors d'oevres for every occassion. This book is just full of ideas, and is well organised into different categories. Some people have mentioned that they ...

Victoria Blashford-Snell, Eric Treuille

DK ADULT, 2007

Fantastic book
I just used this book to throw a party for between 60 and 70 people. It was an invaluable resource. Not only are the recipes excellent, they include helpful guides on planning ahead and alternative ingredient ideas for added diversity. The recipes are uncomplicated and each one has a beautiful color photograph. This is definitely my new favorite party cookbook!

Cocktail Parties, Straight Up! Easy Hors D'oeuvres, Delicious Drinks, and Inspired Ideas for Entertaining ...13 reviews
Lauren Purcell, Anne Purcell Grissinger

Wiley, 2005

Great book for those who like to throw parties
This book had a ton of great (and easy) recipes and tips on how to make entertaining easy for the host. We always have people over to our house and I'm always looking for new recipes that won't keep me in the kitchen. Also, it has lots of basic information on things like how much ice to buy, how to convert a single drink recipe into a pitcher and so on. The party ideas were kind of themey for ...

La Grammaire a l'oeuvre: Media Edition (with Quia)4 reviews
John Barson

Heinle, 2003

Great information, not so great layout
I'm not currently taking a class, so I purchased this book in an earlier edition to study grammar on my own. I like the way subjects are arranged in the book, and the examples provided are long enough to give good context. My main complaint is visual- the book is organized into two columns with text packed in and items in tables are centered rather than left justified. I found this made it a ...

Williams-Sonoma Mastering: Hors d'oeuvres (Williams-Sonoma Mastering)1 review
Jan Weimer

Free Press, 2005

Relatively few recipes, but outstanding instruction
If I were looking for a present for a new cook -- say, newlyweds -- this would be a superb choice. This entry in the Williams Sonoma lineup contains all the "expected" recipes; there's very little here that will surprise an experienced cook. That's a strength, in a way; when you need a good, basic recipe for stuffed clams or tapenade, it seems like all the books you grab have some foo-foo ...

Hors D'oeuvres9 reviews
Gillian Duffy, Melanie Acevedo

William Morrow Cookbooks, 1998

This book is HUGE!
i've tried many hors d'oeuvre cookbooks and this is by far the best. every item i have tried has been fantastic. four of my friends have bought this book after having eaten several different morsels created from this book. it's a great mix of cultural tastes too -- a variety of italian, spanish, french, etc. my only wish is that gillian duffy would create more cookbooks!

Cosimo de` Medici and the Florentine Renaissance: The Patron`s Oeuvre4 reviews
Dale Kent

Yale University Press, 2000

Cosimo and Renaissance Patronage
As an art history student working on a thesis concerning the patronage of the Medici family, I have found this monumentally intellectual work to be the best source of both information and explanation, articulately and interestingly stated. I have read at least 40 books, and many many papers written on this subject, none as well done as Ms. Kent. She looks at patronage from a completely different ...

Fast and Fabulous Hors D'Oeuvres: A Survival Guide for Today's Busy Entertainer6 reviews
Michele Braden

John Wiley & Sons, 1992

Excellent resource for party-giving!
I have made many recipes from this book and they have all been fabulous. The make-ahead tips are extremely helpful and actually let you prepare for a party weeks in advance. Many of the recipes can be frozen, and they taste great when thawed. This book has enabled me to feel at ease about throwing a Christmas party for 60 people!

Flowers of Evil and Other Works/Les Fleurs du Mal et Oeuvres Choisies : A Dual-Language Book (Dover Foreign ...5 reviews
Charles Baudelaire

Dover Publications, 1992

A "success de scandale"...
"All the bourgeois fools who incessantly utter the words immoral, immorality, morality in art, and other silly things remind me of Louise Villedieu, a five franc whore who, when accompanying me one day to the Louvre - where she had never been - started blushing and covering her face; and pulling all the time at my sleeve, she asked, before the immortal statues and paintings, how people could put ...

Martha Stewart's Hors d'Oeuvres: The Creation and Presentation of Fabulous Finger Foods8 reviews
Martha Stewart

Clarkson Potter, 1992

Tastes as good as it reads!
This is a fabulous book. I received it as a Christmas gift when it was first published. I read and re-read the recipes, and was frankly overwhelmed. Not by the recipes, but the pictures. So, I fantasized about making the foods. I didn't venture to attempt the recipes for several months. I attended a reception at the Schomburg Center in NYC, and as I ate the great foods, I had a sense of ...
