AN OLD-FASHIONED THANKSGIVING AND OTHER STORIES is a collection of three of Louis May Alcott's short stories. Within the book readers will get a glimpse of life in New England during the nineteenth century that reflects Alcott's childhood, and in particular, the first story, "An Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving," takes place during the Thanksgiving holiday in 1881. It is a vivid rendering where ...

Jim, if you read your reviews...
...please accept my sincere congratulations and thanks for an absolutely fabulous baking book, where every recipe is delicious and never disappoints. I'm from a family of German baking women -- you know how fine an art baking is in Deutschland -- and have shared your recipes and books with them along with best friends. This afternoon I made your scrumptious lemon bars, which my husband and I ...

a heartfelt read
This book has brought me back to my own colorful childhood. Two of my favorite things when I was a child are my summers at the family cottage and the 1st day of school. The author takes you on twists and turns through the turmoil of being in a dysfunctional family and the challenges that life throws at you. The book was refreshing and engrossing in detail. Nice to know that other families in ...

An Old Fashioned (and really good) Story!
This book started off a bit slow, but if you read more than a page or two at a time, I think you will like it. This story is about a girl from the country who goes to visit her cousins in New York. Polly's cousin, Fanny, and her friends find Polly "coutrified" and "old fashioned". Everyone falls in love with her because of her quiet manner along with the fact that she dresses and acts her age. ...

Every cook needs their bible, and Fobel's is the one to have
I have never been one for the stove top (except to melt butter), but show me an oven, and I'm in heaven. I believe that energy is neither created nor destroyed, only transferred, and what better way to transfer positive energy than in baking? Real baking. No margarine, no Betty Crocker, just you, all those wonderful ingredients, lots of wooden spoons and pans, and of course, Jim Fobel's ...

Treasured Book
This is one of my most useful books. I LOVE it! I remember when my son shot his first deer, I grabbed this book and my umbrella, as it was misting rain, and joined him in our field. I read to him step by step how to field dress the deer from my Encyclopedia of Country Living. It was a total success. Being a city girl and moving to the country after getting married, it was most helpful. I learned ...
An Old-Fashioned Girl

"The author of "Little Women" seeks, and not without success, to draw from her "Old-Fashioned Girl" a contrast and a moral. She presents to our view two young ladies of opposite "styles." One is fresh and rural: the other isn't. The difference is about as great as that between the warbling of woodside birds and the jingle of one of Offenbach's tunes on a corner barrel-organ."-Book Notice from Punchinello, April 30,1870.

New publishing please?
I bought this cookbook at the University of Oregon bookstore so long ago.It was my first cookbook! Sadly, the spine just came apart but since there appears to be no new publishing in sight I will tape it! Two of our favorites include the Old Dominion Creamed Chicken (lightened up)and the sour cream cookies. And of course I love reading the brief history of many of the recipes.

Wonderful practically, visually, and inspirationally
This is one of the most "usable" cookie cookbooks I've seen. I collect cookbooks and have a good basis for comparison. Like all the other Gooseberry Cookbooks, the style of composition makes it a fun book to use. I first bought a copy of this book several years ago and didn't really open it up and look at it. When headed to visit our daughter several states away, I was looking for ...

I just bought 40 copies for our church leaders
I just finished reading the book and bought 40 copies for the teachers in our church. Packer and Parrett have provided a great case for the need to return to catechesis today, asking a fundamental question, "What must we teach?" My only suggestion would be further biblical support with other key terms (i.e. sterizo - Acts 14:22; 15:41; 16:5; 18:23; Rom 1:11; 16:25; 1 Thes 3:2) and key passages ...

Old-fashioned Virtues of Our Swedish "Mumma"
Lucille Lind Arnell
Penfield Pr
, 2002
Lucille Lind Arnell's stories in this book reflect not only a tribute to her mother, but also to a time when values seemed more defined. In these 22 vignettes of a Swedish-immigrant family of 11 growing up in Chicago in the 1930s, '40s, and '50s, Arnell touches the essence of the joys and sorrows of a lifetime. "Mumma's" belief that "living right and doing right were the most important things in life," was the thread that mended the ills and ...

Not just another craft book
I have never found any other craft book quite like this one. It is filled with very striking projects and most projects have a little history included. Some of my friends are restoring Victorian homes in a local historic district. Any of the projects in this book would make very welcome gifts that would be displayed proudly next Christmas. All the patterns are full sized with very easily ...

Let's hear it for nice country girls with sharp tongues !
Cover: The doctor meets his match ..... Patience Martin is a county girl with a sharp tongue and absolutely no interest in the latest fashions. Great Images for the Writer in the family
This book is a shear delight. Included are images that I coveted on rubber stamps that were too expensive, and now I have them all in this book. I have been looking for male images seated at a writing desk, for a scrap booking page for my son. Most of the seated men are older and quite developed in their belly region, but the portraits of Shakespeare and other writers of note, will work just ...
