One Night Stands and Lost Weekends
Lawrence Block
Harper Paperbacks
, 2008
In the era before he created moody private investigator Matthew Scudder, burglar Bernie Rhodenbarr, sleepless spy Evan Tanner, and the amiable hit man Keller?and years before his first Edgar Award?a young writer named Lawrence Block submitted a story titled "You Can't Lose" to Manhunt magazine. It was published, and the rest is history. One Night Stands and Lost Weekends is a sterling collection of short crime fiction and suspense ...

Interesting insight into the tormented psyche of either Indian youth or the author - not sure which...
This quick, engaging story about the problems in the lives of six call center workers in India, portrays the plight of young Indians who in their desire to move up the socioeconomic ladder, ironically find themselves exploited by a distant and uncaring American corporation and restricted by outdated cultural traditions. I enjoyed the story and the writing style, although I thought the "phone ...

Nice book, but not written by Richard Francis Burton
I ordered this book primarily because of the illustrations by Leon Carre. I just purchased a tarot deck by Lo Scarabeo which featured his work from The Thousand and One Nights so I thought it would be interesting to see the originals. There are only a few illustrations in this book, and, note that the book is abridged. I am disappointed with how few illustrations there are considering how nice ...

Starting to miss the humanity
S. Kenyon really made me enjoy Stryker's story, but like the last few books the books have fallen into a catagory I can only say is like she has removed the humanity. The humans now have to become "OTHER" or gain powers. Humans who are really part Demon. Part of the wonder of the series was although our Dark Hunters are vampire like they weren't most used to be human so there was always a bit ...

HADASSAH ONE NIGHT WITH THE KING
This book is totally awesome. The story line is beautiful, and it also follows how everything happened in the Bible. It is one of the greatest love stories that I have ever read. I would highly recommend it. ONE NIGHT WITH THE KING is one of my very favorite books. It could have been twice the pages, as I hated for it to end.

Bad Chapter in a Great Series
This is an anomaly. The series is fantastic. This book however... it's like a filler episode. There's no real conflict. Instead, the writer listed a bunch of innuendo. And the story that Sehara tells is pointless and boring. It's just some rich, bratty pretty-boy trying to get into Socrates' pants (or rather, his tunic). It has nothing to do with the little plot happening in the book. Even the ...

Beautiful

By chance, the two meet at a party that Helen reluctantly went to with a friend. Somehow, Helen and Gabe connect emotionally in an almost magical ...

Fantastic Tales
This book is a selection of the choicest tales from the Thousand and One Nights. The translator, N.J. Dawood, also translated the Koran for the Penguin Classics series. Dawood explains in the introduction that the first of these tales appeared in a written form around 850 C.E., in a book called, "A Thousand Legends." More tales, of lesser quality, were added over the years until an anonymous ...

Wondrously illustrated!
[This review first appeared in the "Ephrata (Pa.) Review."] This book's folkloric illustrations, in soft pastels, evoke mystery, comfort, even whimsy, and are so captivating that it takes a while to get around to the words! The story, also delightful, takes place in Bethlehem. An old, lonely ox is hoping for a visit from his master. One windy night, he invites various stray animals to stay ...

One Night in America: Robert Kennedy, Cesar Chavez, and the Dream of Dignity
Steven W. Bender
Paradigm Publishers
, 2008
Robert Kennedy and Cesar Chavez came from opposite sides of the tracks of race and class that still divide Americans. Both optimists, Kennedy and Chavez shared a common vision of equality. They united in the 1960s to crusade for the rights of migrant farm workers. Farm workers faded from public consciousness following Kennedy's assassination and Chavez's early passing. Yet the work of Kennedy and Chavez continues to reverberate in America today. ...

One Night Stands...
Wonderful book. Second I have read from Shenkman and I am off to order more. There are few books that when the end comes, you have a deep feeling of regret. I hated to see the book end. It treats history in an interesting manner and provides stories that are often left out in the dry classes that worry about covering a survey course and not the interesting tidbit of social history which add ...

Another Volume of Gorgeous Art with Bittersweet Plot
For me, this volume has been just as wonderful as the other ones have and after scavenging for this volume for literally months (the series seems to have changed publishers and its release date was pushed back quite a few months) and I finally found it by change in a bookstore. As past volumes, this one follows the theme of some of the actual plot of the series as well as another told within ...

Universal, Timeless Storytelling
The Arabian Nights: Tales from A Thousand and One Nights -translated by Sir Richard F. The stories have an underbidding ...

Wonderful illustrations & story tell the meaning of Christmas
This is a great Christmas read that gives an overview of the gospel, from creation to Christ's resurrection. A boy is injured and must seek refuge with an older widow during a snowstorm. As he recuperates and waits for the storm to settle down, she tells him the story of man's fall and redemption through Christ Jesus. This book does a good job of sticking to the true facts of the Bible ...
