Understanding Operating Systems, Fifth Edition14 reviews
Ann McHoes, Ida M. Flynn

Course Technology, 2007

Great Intro to a complicated subject
This book really hits the important info about a complicated subject. When I was studying OS in college, I didn't need to create operating systems, I needed to know what they're all about. This was the required book in my OS class and I could read and understand even the complicated stuff. It's a good starting place. This is one of only 2 textbooks that I didn't sell when I graduated. It's still ...

Operating System Concepts with Java1 review
Abraham Silberschatz, Peter Baer Galvin, ...

Wiley, 2006

Great Book
Currently I am a CS student in my senior year. I am taking my final for the class tomorrow and the book has done an excellent job of taking some complex topics and translating them into legible english. That being said, I will just explain some of the flaws. The first problem is the pictures or figures in book which are trying to give a visualization of the topics being explained. There a ...

Modern Operating Systems (3rd Edition) (GOAL Series)27 reviews
Andrew S. Tanenbaum

Prentice Hall, 2007

Amazing
I have been able to, using just this book, read and learn about operating systems in a very thorough and painless way. The writing is straightforward and really demystifies OSs. I am a college CS student taking an OS course and this has been an invaluable asset.

Operating Systems: Internals and Design Principles (6th Edition) (GOAL Series)35 reviews
William Stallings

Prentice Hall, 2008

A very good textbook
Like many other people, this book was assigned to me as a textbook for a college class. I found it to be tremendously useful, and learned far more form it than the professor. Although clearly not for a beginner, if you're serious about learning what goes into an OS, and how current OSes work on a fundamental level, this is a great reference.

Operating System Concepts (7th Edition)17 reviews
Abraham Silberschatz, Peter Baer Galvin, ...

Wiley, 2004

Opearing systems concept
I have been using this book for my master in IT science and it has been a great help in my studies. I hardly have to go elsewhere for research; its content is very clear and very concrete. I have to say that this book has added a great value to my studies.

Standard Operating Procedure8 reviews
Philip Gourevitch, Errol Morris

Penguin Press HC, The, 2008

Required reading for this century
This is literally a thought provoking work. The authors carefully refrain from judgment and share a dozen carefully interwoven stories: the slapdash way the occupation of Iraq was handled; the deliberately vague guidance given the almost completely untrained national guard platoon; the tragedy that ensues when a group of near-civilians get puffed up with the self-importance that comes from ...

Operating Instructions: A Journal of My Son's First Year152 reviews
Anne Lamott

Anchor, 2005

A must-have for new mothers
This book helped me survive my first-born. It was such a breath of fresh air, and Lamott was like my best friend, sharing the same experiences. I have read this book countless times - and laugh out loud each time. I always send this book to all my friends when they have their first born. (As you can see by my order history.) This is a much better tool than any of the how-to baby books out ...

Pocket Guide to the Operating Room (Pocket Guide to Operating Room)17 reviews
Maxine A. Goldman

F. A. Davis Company, 2007

Plastic Surgeon's review
I find this "Pocket" guide to the O.R. very useful for both my operating room nurses and myself. It provides a convenient source for preparations so that the operating team can be more efficient and knowledgeable. The guide is valuable to any member of the operating team, especially with the diverse nature of surgery in the current times. Everyone associated with the Operating Room would find ...

Guide To Operating Systems, Enhanced Edition1 review
Michael Palmer

Course Technology, 2006

These books get out of date quickly
This really isn't a BAD book. I guess the reason I didn't like it so much is that it doesn't include the best information on the newest Windows OSs or the newst networking protocols. Yes, Vista is mentioned and described in brief, but I'd say there was more (and better) information on MAC OS than there was on Vista. And there's virtually no information on the new wireless Draft N standard. ...

Operating System Concepts (Windows Xp Update)56 reviews
Abraham Silberschatz, Greg Gagne, ...

Wiley, 2002

It's the "Concepts" Book
This book does a good job in keeping up with the Title, "OS Concepts". I won't go in detail justifying that, as it's already been done by several before me. However, one point worth mentioning is that it's still a concepts book. To be a real programmer / computer science person, one needs to implement the concepts. In that regard, I'd recommed the book " Operating Systems: Design & ...

Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth5 reviews
R. Buckminster Fuller

Lars Müller Publishers, 2008

Control, Operate and Plan Your Spaceship
R. Buckminster Fuller's (Bucky hereout), designer of the geodesic dome (one can see at EPCOT), lays down the thought patterns of a successful world in this short and concise book based on his discoveries (probably more appropriate than inventions, as he said "I am not tryingto imitate nature, I'm trying to find the principles she uses"). It is in this book that Bucky gives the reader insight ...

Operating Systems Design and Implementation (3rd Edition) (Prentice Hall Software Series)26 reviews
Andrew S Tanenbaum, Albert S Woodhull

Prentice Hall, 2006

A great introduction to operating systems
This book is written by Tanenbaum, the main guy behind Minix, which is what Linux was based on. It provides good overviews for basic OS concepts like memory management, file systems, processes, etc. The concepts in this book book are intimately tied to examples of the Minix OS, which is a good thing. To those who would rather see examples from Linux: Minix is a compact and modular OS, which ...

The ARRL Operating Manual For Radio Amateurs (Arrl Operating Manual)2 reviews

American Radio Relay League (ARRL), 2008

Fun, Topical Reading
This is one of those books you can pick up and read random chapters, or even individual pages and find value. The book is organized topically and covers a wide variety of interests, so whether your interest is RTTY, DX, moonbounce, or whatever, you'll likely find it covered here - not just in shallow survey form, either (in spite of its wide coverage), but with usable advice and perspective. I ...

Guide to Parallel Operating Systems with Microsoft Windows XP and Linux1 review
Ron Carswell, Heidi Webb, ...

Course Technology, 2006

Actually went to the school who has these teachers.
The exercises are bland, and definitely doesn't even begin to properly cover linux. almost treats linux as a step child. give it a cookie just because its here and i dont want to hear its supporters cry. it also seems to treat the distribution fedora as the alpha and omega of linux. it does vaguely mention there are others, but just barely and easy to miss. the good points are, its almost ...

Learning the UNIX Operating System, Fifth Edition42 reviews
Jerry Peek, Grace Todino-Gonguet, ...

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2002

Excellent Beginner Book!
I didn't know anything about Unix at all. After reading the reviews here, I decided on this book. It's for beginners like me. After finishing the book and practicing the exercises, I believe that I'm ready to go to the next level. And I didn't need any over-priced DVDs to go with it (and neither do you!)

Nature's Operating Instructions: The True Biotechnologies (The Bioneers Series)1 review

Sierra Club Books, 2004

Inspiring reading
This was one of two books suggested as texts for a Permaculture Design Course I am taking. The essays are inspiring and educational. I have loved reading this little big book, and will probably read many parts of it again.

Survey of Operating Systems (Mike Meyers' Computer Skills)3 reviews
Charles Holcombe, Jane Holcombe

Career Education, 2005

Excellent add on for the A+ study guide.
Looking for the A+ certification? As you know this certification has 2 exams, I for hardware and 1 for the Operating systems. This book is a great prep tool for the OS section as it covers several key operating systems and few that aren't on the exam. The book starts off with a hardware overview, which is very helpful in the understanding of software. Then you deal with the older operating ...

Operating Systems: A Systematic View (6th Edition)7 reviews
William S. Davis, T.M. Rajkumar

Addison Wesley, 2004

The best book off it's type.
If you are looking for a text that only covers Microsoft operating systems then this is not your book. BUT, if you want a book to teach the fundamentals of an operating system as a platform for today's bread and butter applications(AR, AP, BILLING, SA, INVENTORY, ETC) then this is super. The current world of new computer-ist they only know/learn the Microsoft systems. The bulk of processing ...

Berry & Kohn's Operating Room Technique10 reviews
Nancymarie Phillips

Mosby, 2007

This is a great book
I have been a surgeons puppy dog for many years now. I worked in the OR before I went to medical school, then mainly took all surgery electives. This book helped when the discussion of positioning, the background, overview, and has pictures. I will use it next year when I am a surgical intern also. I only recommend to those who are serious about surgery or who have the money to get it during med ...
