The Orphan's Tales: In the Night Garden24 reviews
Catherynne M. Valente

Spectra, 2006

Please excuse my spoiler
I haven't read any fantasy quite like Catherynne M. Valente's The Orphan's Tales duology. This is the story of a young orphan girl who is shunned because of the dark smudges that appeared on her eyelids when she was a baby. She lives alone in a sultan's garden because people think she's a demon and nobody will claim her. However, one of the young sons of the sultan, a curious fellow, finds her in ...

Orphan's Journey (Jason Wander)14 reviews
Robert Buettner

Orbit, 2008

The Journey continues...
Jason Wander is back in his third book along with Jeeb, Ord, Jude and a whole new world full of characters (and animals) who will depend on him to save them. Oh, yeah, the nasty Slugs are back too. I'm truly enjoying the Jason Wander Series by Mr. Buettner, they are a fun read and I'm even learning some famous quotes from Earth's military history. When I first met Jason in the first two books ...

The Great Arizona Orphan Abduction8 reviews
Linda Gordon

Harvard University Press, 2001

astonishing awakening
This is one of the best history books I have ever read. Not only does it focus on a little known, little discussed part of history...the selling of orphans, it also sheds light on the cultural factors that allowed this to happen. I have passed this book on to so many friends that I have had to purchase extra copies to continue to do so. The author has an easy style that could almost lull ...

Twelve Mighty Orphans: The Inspiring True Story of the Mighty Mites Who Ruled Texas Football25 reviews
Jim Dent

St. Martin's Griffin, 2008

A New Favorite.
Maybe it's because I am from Fort Worth, and I consider myself to be an AMATEUR local historian; however, I just could not put this book down! I read the entire thing in one night, because I couldn't stop. The story is gripping...makes you laugh, makes you cry. This should definately be made into a movie, if it isn't being done already. Occasionally I'll drive by the Masonic Home and ...

Orphans of Chaos28 reviews
John C. Wright

Tor Science Fiction, 2006

Good Story, wish the rest were available for Kindle.
I enjoyed the descriptions of extra dimensions abilities of the characters. Got this book for $0.00, I guess as a promotion from the publisher. I would guess the idea would be to promote the whole series. But, only the first book in the series is available for the Kindle, so I don't quite see the point. It's especially frustrating since the story kind of leaves you hanging.

When We Were Orphans: A Novel205 reviews
Kazuo Ishiguro

Vintage, 2001

An unusual and moving story
I liked it the first time I read it; when I re-read it I was blown away. Ishiguro works in odd, subtle ways and I guess it took me a while to get it, but get I did. The setting is concrete, the narrative is clear, but they are only partly what Ishiguro seems to be writing about. The section on war-torn Shanghai as the narrator goes from blown-out underground room to blown-out underground room ...

Midlife Orphan10 reviews
Jane Brooks

Berkley Trade, 1999

A Label for the Feelings
In the blink of an eye, my world changed and I became a midlife orphan. My healthy mom unexpectedly died ten months ago. I thought it would still be OK because I had my dad, my world would stay the same because he was still with us. But five weeks later he unexpectedly died, I feel of a broken heart. I remember thinking it was now not OK - I was now an orphan. I found this book easy to ...

Orphan Train2 reviews
Verla Kay

Putnam Juvenile, 2003

Touching story told with care
Verla Kay has an amazing ability to tell a complex story in few words. I think kids will be intrigued by this story of children sent West to be adopted by whoever shows up at the station. It caught my attention. What a lottery of fate! It's not grim or depressing, but it's not overly "sweetened", either. It's thought provoking and ends with a believable note of hope and happiness for the main ...

The Orphan Trains: Placing Out in America (Bison Book)1 review
Marilyn Irvin Holt

Bison Books, 1994

An Excellent Resource!
From 1853 to about 1929, more than 200,000 children and several thousand adults were sent west on "orphan trains," leaving crowded urban areas on the East Coast behind. Holt's book focuses on the placing out system--from its creation to its demise--instituted by the Children's Aid Society of New York. Estimates of the number of destitute children living in the streets of New York in 1853 ...

Orphan Train Rider: One Boy's True Story8 reviews
Andrea Warren

Houghton Mifflin, 1998

Comforting
Adopted children can often feel like outsiders, even though they have found families who love them like their own. They may be teased about being adopted, they may be angry at their circumstances. This book is an excellent treatment for all those problems, for it discusses the issue of adoption openly, and shows children that they are not alone. In 63 photo-filled pages in 11 chapters, ...

A Place to Belong (Orphan Train Adventures)4 reviews
Joan Lowery Nixon

Laurel Leaf, 1996

A Place to Belong
This is a great book. I wouldn't recommend reading this book before: A Family Apart, Caught in the Act, and In the Face of Danger. It is the last book a Quartet about the Kelly children. Unless you don't want to read the first three I suggest you read A Place to Belong last.

Orphan Star6 reviews
Alan Dean Foster

Del Rey, 1985

This book has 2 things going for it...
1) Alan Dean Foster is the author. 2) Flinx and Pip, need I say more? anyway, this is another great book in the Flinx and Pip series. I recommend this book to all. I can't really give a synapsis, it's been too long since I've read it (I'm gonna buy a copy because I borrowed it from the library, and want my own copy). This entire series is probably one of my favorite series. Read it in order ...

Mongrels, Bastards, Orphans, and Vagabonds: Mexican Immigration and the Future of Race in America (Vintage)7 reviews
Gregory Rodriguez

Vintage, 2008

You Won't Think About Race and Immigration the Same Way Again
If you are skeptical about books that either argue that new immigrants can't assimilate or that they are overwhelmed by a tidal wave of American culture, Gregory Rodriguez offers the antidote. He shows that Mexican-American immigration resembles in many ways the patterns of other immigrant groups but that Mexicans have embraced a broader Hispanic or Latino identity as their circumstances have ...

Orphans of the Sky30 reviews
Robert A. Heinlein

Baen, 2001

A classic Heinlein read
A classic Heinlein read. Orphans of the Sky tells the story of a "multigenerational ship" (which, with a sleeper ship, is still what the human race would use to escape from our solar system) who were sent towards Alpha Centauri. The journey would have taken 60 years (according to plan). At some point during the journey, a mutiny occurs and all of the ship's officers are killed. With no ...

The Orphan's Tales: In the Cities of Coin and Spice (Orphan's Tales)8 reviews
Catherynne Valente

Spectra, 2007

Story after Story after Story -- and all excellent
This is another excellent set of stories - truly a modern Arabian nights - that you will read and treasure. Unlike her first book, which I greatly enjoyed and read in a few days, for this book, I took the time and treasured each story one by one. I really love the way the stories all relate and turn in upon one another. And the locations and characters are so magnificently original. A real ...
