Short overview of the Revolution in South Carolina
Walter Edgar's "Partisans and Redcoats: The Southern Conflict That Turned the Tide of the American Revolution" is a short, readable history of the many small-scale Revolutionary battles in South Carolina. It is well-written and well-researched, but one of the biggest flaws is that it is too cursory of a treatment of the subject. During the Revolutionary War, South Carolina was the key to the ...

Historically Accurate
In one scene in the book, Faye described an attack by a German helicopter on their group of partisans. Two of the reviews said that the book is historically inaccurate as they claim that the Germans did not have helicopters in use in WWII. This is false information. The Germans did use a helicopter in WWII called the Flettner FL-282 Kolibri. Initially it was used by the German navy for ...
Avant-Gardes and Partisans Reviewed
Fred Orton

Griselda Pollock
Manchester University Press
, 1997
The authors of this text, Orton and Pollock, are considered exponents of the social history of art. Their approach to the study of art began in 1978 with the publication of their analysis of popular artists such as Van Gogh which denied the simplistic interpretations of the popular art world of such "Masters" of art. Over the past 20 years they have continued to re-appraise and re-invent art historical analyses, focusing on the formation of ...
Parties without Partisans: Political Change in Advanced Industrial Democracies (Comparative Politics)
Oxford University Press, USA
, 2002
This book provides the most comprehensive analysis to date of the roles that political parties perform in twenty OECD nations. It finds that parties continue to exercise their traditional roles in organizing elections and structuring the government process, but that they are losing the allegiance of a public that is increasingly non-partisan and sceptical about political parties as institutions. These findings lead to a discussion about the ...
Partisans of Allah: Jihad in South Asia
Ayesha Jalal
Harvard University Press
, 2008
The idea of jihad is central to Islamic faith and ethics, and yet its meanings have been highly contested over time. They have ranged from the philosophical struggle to live an ethical life to the political injunction to wage war against enemies of Islam. Today, more than ever, jihad signifies the political opposition between Islam and the West. As the line drawn between Muslims and non-Muslims becomes more rigid, Ayesha Jalal seeks to ...
Theory of the Partisan: Intermediate Commentary on the Concept of the Political
Carl Schmitt
Telos Press Publishing
, 2007
Carl Schmitt (1888-1985), one of the great legal and political thinkers of the 20th century, thought long and hard about the role and significance of war. He saw how the international law of the Eurocentric era of world history began to falter at the end of World War I and foundered at the end of World War II. Following World War II, belligerent acts around the world began to assume a distinctly partisan character, and the ...

Pathbreaking
What is incredible about this book is its succinct restatement of the body of work these authors have worked on over the past decade and what has come to characterize the state of the field in the macropartisanship in political science. It is an easy read and will definitely become a classic

This Book is Absolutely Amazing
In her book, "Defiance: The Bielski Partisans", Nechama Tec depicts an amazing tale of Jewish resistance and rescue on the eastern front during World War II. At the pith of this movement was one Tuvia Bielski, the commander of the large Jewish partisan outfit that roamed the Belorussian woods, constantly trying to avoid contact with the Germans. Tuvia, along with his brothers Asael and Zus were ...

European Fiction
Is it any wonder, European fiction is whipping the American fiction world by leagues. de Bernieres writing reaches new heights of post-Modernist literature. While America can only understand its own pop fiction, thriller, comedy, false memoir, murder mystery, etc., the gamut of "beach books," Europeans and Asians are creating the new literature of a global community. You will fly through 'A ...

Heroes forever
As someone who has spent years in Vilna, I know of the places which Michael Bart studied and Laurel Corona then wrote about. Mr. Bart did lengthy and in-depth work and Ms. Corona took that research in combination with her own visit to Vilna and research to turn Until Our Last Breath into a must-read. I have been fortunate enough to meet former Jewish partisans, Righteous Gentiles, and those ...

An interesting book with some useful suggestions
I agree with the authors that there's been too much polarization in recent American politics. Many issues facing our nation are for the most part bipartisan. We need a functioning economy, we need excellence in our institutions, we need to address issues in health, transportation, the environment, education, economic stability and security, housing, human rights, justice, and much more. ...

Geoffrey Garrett

An important book about globalization and politics!
This is a book which is bound to be quite controversial. Garrett explodes the argument that global economic integration is making national politics irrelevant; the evidence presented in this book is overwhelming. This is a book which must be read by all serious students of international relations, comparative politics, and political economy.
Bandits and Partisans: The Antonov Movement in the Russian Civil War (Pitt Russian East European)

Beginning in the fall of 1920, Aleksandr Antonov led an insurgency that became the largest armed peasant revolt against the Soviets during the civil war. Yet by the summer of 1921, the revolt had been crushed, and popular support for the movement had all but disappeared. Until now, details of this conflict have remained hidden. Erik Landis mines recently opened provincial and central Soviet archives and international collections to provide a ...

Clever, wity, relevent.
Recut Madness is a unique blend of current events, satire, and popular culture. I enjoyed the sheer absurdity and of having Forest Gump find a downed National Guard pilot who bears a striking resemblance to one G.W. Bush. as well as the anachronistic, but perfectly executed, piece based on Spartacus. The main feature, The Wizard of Dubya is, in its self, funny and complet enough to have been a ...

a wonderful focused work on Washington's use of the militia.
I think this book was very enlightening about the role of the militia and how Washington creatively used them along with regular military during the Revolutionary War. Being a New Jersey native, I was appreciative of the author's feel for the area. I gained a new appreciation for Washington as a military strategist. Definitely worth reading!
