The by-now widely known cult artist Raymond Pettibon was first recognized outside of the art scene for creating flyers, concert posters and album covers for the independent record label SST, owned by his brother, Greg Ginn. But he soon distanced himself from the Californian hardcore punk scene and developed, sometimes in books, sometimes on single sheets, his "Tragedie humaine," which has continued to chip away at America's understanding of ...

Question: Comics or art? Answer: art.
The catalogue for an exhibition held in 2007, this book shows a very large sample of Pettibon's output (high-quality reproductions) and the accompanying essays give a new insight on the artist and the importance of the written word in his work. Quite a number of books have recently been published on Pettibon and I would say that this one is the best available.

An amazing collection of Raymond Pettibon's work spanning over the years. High quality book loaded with images and information as well as interviews with Pettibon. Up until now no other book offered as much insight on this relatively obscure artist. Buy it!!!

As its point of departure,Funny Cuts takes, as its point of departure, Pop Art's revolutionary referencing of comics and concludes with the most current trends in contemporary art, reflecting in many diverse ways its dialogue with the commercial and trivial picture worlds of comics and cartoons. Pop Art artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein were ground-breaking in their provocative confrontation with high and low art using motifs and ...

Masters all
I recently purchased The Monster of Frankenstein, Dick Briefer's Horror Comic Epic" and was so enthralled by this golden age comic that I had to have more. "Masters of Comic Art", a reexamination of pop culture comics morphed in to fine art, is a useful overview of a "who's who" in the comic world. Beautifully reproduced in full color and loaded with great art and interesting information ...

I didn't even know he'd become this famous...
As someone who first encountered Raymond Pettibon's alarming artwork on the covers of Black Flag and Minutemen LPs I'd bought in the late 80s, I sort of assumed that, by now, he'd sunk back into even more obscurity than he was subject to then. Imagine my surprise when I picked up this thing in a secondhand bookshop in Dublin - an anthology of various writings over the last few thousand years ...

Notwithstanding their considerable differences and individuality--one would hardly expect them to have a lover in common--Louise Bourgeois, Marlene Dumas, Paul McCarthy and Raymond Pettibon share an artistic intent to explore eroticism and sexuality. Each artist deals, in his or her own stylistic way, with the intense physical states of ecstasy, passion, conflict and fear. Working through the medium of drawing--the "medium of the mind"--they ...

Good Book if you know German
Big fan of Raymond Pettibone and early 80's American Hardcore music. This book is primarily written in German (or something) and the English that is in it explains practically nothing about the man or that period of his life. If your looking for a book with Raymond Pettibone's art work or story, I recommend; Raymond Pettibone: A Reader and Raymond Pettibone: Whatever It Is You're Looking For, You ...

Strongly influenced by pop culture, and not afraid to rain acid critic on various political, economic and cultural developments, the drawings, paintings and videos of Pettibon are widely celebrated. Some 280 of his works, produced over the last decade, have been collected for this stunning exhibition catalogue which is clearly laid-out and printed on thick, glossy paper.

Stick Figure Penises?
Page after Page of nothing but similar stick figure penises, with a few words that is somehow supposed to make this seem witty. I bought it and returned it. I expected much more from the talent that once brought us the cover art from The Blasting Concept album.

Is Las Vegas, the capital of the Western entertainment complex, also set to become the capital of art? A large number of artists live there or visit often, Venice was partially reconstructed there, and the Bellagio resort and casino house an art collection that includes El Grecos and Picassos promoted as if they were Frank Sinatra or the Beach Boys. At this historic moment, art is losing the visionary power to which it used to lay claim and is ...

The Best Pettibon Book Yet
A few years ago, Quimby's books in Chicago had a whole bunch of these little digest-sized, xerox-produced, hand stapled booklets by Raymond Pettibon. I never bought any, and always regretted it. Some savvy art-speculator probably snatched up the whole lot. They were selling them for a dollar or two each, and now they go for hundreds on the market. They were personally handmade by the great ...
