Conceptions of Education
Gerald Gutek's review of philosophies, ideologies, and theories of education is an impressive overview of perspectives on education. The book begins with a description of major philosophical positions, including Idealism, Realism, Thomism, Naturalism, Pragmatism, Existentialism, and Philosophical Analysis. In addition to providing a brief history of these perspectives, the author offers a useful ...

Excellent basic text for undergraduate ed/phil courses.
I teach an entry-level undergraduate course in educational philosophy. My first year students needed a basic text to structure the course, yet it was important to me that the students read WHAT the philosphers had to say rather than just reading ABOUT them. This volume enables the students to do just that -- it contains primary source material in the form of selected essays by leading ...

Six stars, a one of a kind masterpiece
This book is an excellent introduction to philosophy from a Christian perspective by two of the world's leading evangelical philosophers. This textbook covers everything from epistemology to metaphysics to philosophy of science to ethics to philosophy of religion. Craig and Moreland divide it up according to their specialties: Craig does most of the epistemology and philosophy of religion (and ...
Philosophical Investigations (3rd Edition)

Learn from it but there is no need to worship it
This is a book which at one time was worshipped. It was taken to be the holy text that gave the true answers to the philosophical puzzles that graduate students in philosophy were puzzling over. Wittgenstein was the hero and his manner of ' doing philosophy' of walking and holding his forehead, and waiting in silence and thinking for long stretches of time while puzzling it out was imitated by ...

Thought provoking, but difficult
I had to read many of the readings from this book for my Intro to Ethics class. While it continued to stimulate my mind and make me think past what I had previously believed on many issues, I had to re-read many writings multiple times to even start to understand what was REALLY being talked about. However, when I did understand, it made the reading that much more interesting.

Quick survey for educators
This is a fine attempt at a survey of philosophical ideas behind Western educational systems. The editors have chosen a few exemplars of philosophers from ancient Greece through modern day constructivist American educational philosophers. Especially praiseworthy is the inclusion of women authors in the third version, although at the expense of such thinkers as Richard Rorty, Vygotsky, and ...
The Philosophical Writings of Descartes: Volume 2
Rene Descartes
Cambridge University Press
, 1985
These two volumes provide a completely new translation of the philosophical works of Descartes, based on the best available Latin and French texts. They are intended to replace the only reasonably comprehensive selection of his works in English, by Haldane and Ross, first published in 1911. All the works included in that edition are translated here, together with a number of additional texts crucial for an understanding of Cartesian philosophy, ...

The Meaning of Life - Page 1
I tend to agree with that great scientist Hans Eysenck when he said "all philosophers do is yak, yak, yak, but show them a fact and they fall on their face." Nozick is different. He doesn't provide many facts, but he deals directly with the subjects we want philosophy to tackle, including: Why do we exist? What is free will? What is an ethical life and why should we lead it? Of course, he ...
The Philosophical Theology of Jonathan Edwards

Sang Hyun Lee
Princeton University Press

Essential to Understanding Jonathan Edwards
Sang Hyun Lee's book is the essential text on Edwards's metaphysics. Not everyone thinks he is right (though I, like most mainstream Edwards scholars, think he is) but every knowledgable scholar realizes that the path to understanding Edwards's metaphysics lies through Lee's work and not around it. The book is densely and carefully written, and at least one graduate student has embarrassed ...

Important Collection
This is an important collections of texts by Wittgenstein. For those interested in Wittgenstein and ethics, the lecture on ethics printed here may be significant. This book also contains Wittgenstein's remarks on Frazer's Golden Bough, which is important when one wants to understand Wittgenstein's views on religion and culture. However, the most important thing here is probably some remarks ...
Philosophical Fragments/Johannes Climacus : Kierkegaard's Writings, Vol 7

Soren Kierkegaard
Princeton University Press

One of Kierkegaard's most essential works
If one were to read only two or three of Kierkegaard's works, this is unquestionably one of the ones to read. In this work and in its successor, Kierkegaard, employing the pseudonym of Johannes Climacus, seeks to explain the nature of Christianity in such as way as to bring out its demands on the individual, and to emphasize its incompatibility with the theology based on the work of Hegel that ...

Excellent Introduction to Logic and Philosophy
REVIEW: This book, while sometimes reading like a condensed encyclopedia, is an excellent resource for anyone interested in Philosophical thought and Logic. It is an excellent introduction as well as a reference book. And while the title and binding may detract from it's apparent academic credibility, I assure you it is there. The book covers several sections, beginning with basic ...
Philosophical Perspectives on Sex and Love
Robert M. Stewart
Oxford University Press, USA
, 1995
Despite the centrality of sexuality and love to human life, western history's great philosophers have not produced anything like a detailed and systematic approach to these matters. From Plato's emphasis upon the importance of eros, to the insistence by today's feminists on gender equality, philosophy's interpretation of eroticism and love has been as diverse and explosive as the subject itself. It is this imposing variety of approach and ...
The Essential Peirce: Selected Philosophical Writings, 1893-1913

This convenient two-volume reader's edition makes accessible to students and scholars the most important philosophical papers of the brilliant American thinker Charles Sanders Peirce. Volume 2 presents twenty-nine pivotal texts, beginning with "Immortality in the Light of Synechism", in which Peirce proposes synechism, the tendency to regard everything as continuous, as a key advance over the three popular 'isms' materialism, idealism, and ...
