Fundamentals of Physics Extended5 reviews
David Halliday, Robert Resnick, ...

Wiley, 2007

Knowledge Does Not Come Easy
It is unfortunate that there exist two groups of people who might read this textbook at some point: Those who enjoy physics and those who need only to pass a physics class (or three) in college. It is easy to appeal to the former, because this book is comprehensive and reads like a novel for the physics-minded. It covers all of the standard topics thoroughly and clearly without getting into ...

Physics: Principles with Applications6 reviews
Douglas C. Giancoli

Pearson Education, 2004

outstanding
I used Giancoli as my primary text in high school, and found it to be a superb text. I think those complaining of a lack of worked problems are missing the entire point of this text and the essence of studying physics. This book is about understanding physics principles and the equations you use to solve physics problems. You will find that with this understanding (certainly provided by this ...

2005 Edition if VERY Different from earlier editions
2005 Edition if VERY Different from earlier editions -- reviews that pre-date 2005 are not talking about the current edition of this book--- More than half of the book was rewitten for the 2005 editon, and it now follows the Modeling Instruction in Physics curriculum more closely than any other current textbook. Note: Modeling Instruction in Physics was recognized in 2001 by the U.S. Department ...

Informative
Comprehensive and thorough. A must for anyone who needs an understanding of applying calculations to actions. I found this book to be even paced and very understandable.

Holt Physics3 reviews
Raymond A. Serway, Jerry S. Faughn

Holt Rinehart & Winston, 2005

Superb Physics book!
This was the text book used in my honors physics class. Though it may not go into extremely advanced issues, it does touch on A LOT of material, including basic collisions, fluids, rotational motion, relativity (a bit), and even some quantum mechanics. This book is definitely useful to anyone who wants a better education in basic physics and a start into somewhat beginner's advanced physics.

Enhanced College Physics (with PhysicsNOW)2 reviews
Raymond A. Serway, Jerry S. Faughn, ...

Brooks Cole, 2006

Still a good, sound text for college general physics...
Updaated: Fall 2008. Still using this text. Still no complaints, verbal or otherwise, from students. Will continue using it for another year. Gave it five stars, because of the other review here about amazons slow delivery. Didn't order mine from amazon, so I can't comment about that, just the quality of the text. But I have noticed that all my orders from amazon seem to have been slow in ...

College Physics
Raymond A. Serway, Jerry S. Faughn, ...

Brooks Cole, 2008

While physics can seem challenging, its true quality is the sheer simplicity of fundamental physical theories--theories and concepts that can enrich your view of the world around you. COLLEGE PHYSICS, 8e, provides a clear strategy for connecting those theories to a consistent problem-solving approach, carefully reinforcing this methodology throughout the text and connecting it to real-world examples. For students planning to take the MCAT exam, ...

College Physics (Paper Version with PhysicsNow)30 reviews
Raymond A. Serway, Jerry S. Faughn, ...

Brooks Cole, 2005

Sloppy
I am not at all impressed with the 7th ed. I am now using another textbook instead of the the College Physics 7th ed required for my class. The text itself if so-so. The text explanations of concepts are unclear and unnecessarily wordy, not the worst out there but certainly nothing to scream about. One of the irritating tendencies was that simple explanations of even basic concepts were few ...

Physics for Future Presidents: The Science Behind the Headlines13 reviews
Richard A. Muller

W. W. Norton, 2008

A Level-Headed Scientific Approach to Important Issues
What drew me to this book was not so much its title, although it is quite intriguing, but its author. I had read a couple of Professor Muller's books in the past and found them to be very engaging as well as models of clarity. This book is no exception. Using logical scientific reasoning, the author addresses various topics that a future president would likely need to deal with. The topics are: ...

Physics for Scientists and Engineers, Volume 1, Chapters 1-22, 7th Edition2 reviews
Raymond A. Serway, John W. Jewett

Brooks Cole, 2007

What to do with a phyisics degree and mediocre teaching ability? Write a physics textbook!
Snark of my title aside, this book is really poor for trying to learn physics from, on your own, which with the quality of many teachers today you are most likely to end up doing. If you find a quality teacher willing to take the time to form his or her own explanations for everything in this book, in more understandable terms, then it is a good reference. But if you are not that fortunate, I ...

Physics for Scientists and Engineers with Modern Physics, Chapters 39-46 (with CengageNOW 2-Semester, ...18 reviews
Raymond A. Serway, John W. Jewett

Brooks Cole, 2007

Excellent Textbook!
I really am impressed with this textbook. It is one of the most organized texts I have ever used in college. The authors and publisher do an excellent job of "formatting" the topics. All equations are very well marked and numbered. Many other texts throw an equation in the middle of a paragraph and you can never find it when you need it. Not so in this book! You will always find just what ...

Physics For Dummies (For Dummies (Math & Science))13 reviews

I have already received a degree in physics, but am always looking at texts for further understanding and alternate perspectives. This book is good for either a beginner or someone looking strengthen their grasp of physics.

Student Study Guide and Selected Solutions Manual, Volume 1 for College Physics7 reviews
Bo Lou

Addison Wesley, 2006

Best Algebra Based Physics Text
Physics is a difficult subject. This text does an admirable job of making a difficult subject easier. There are advantages and disadvantages to disallowing the writer to use calculus in writing the material. Some formulas require calculus to derive and so must be either taken on faith as true, or the derivations looked up in a calculus based test. Fortunately the times when this issue comes up ...

Schaum's Outline of College Physics, 10th edition (Schaum's Outlines)9 reviews
Frederick J. Bueche, Eugene Hecht

McGraw-Hill, 2005

Get this book, study it, and you will be confident in solving physics problems and do well in class!!
Oh my,I absolutely love this book!! It is by far the most useful supplementary book I've ever used! I had a horrible AP physics teacher and textbook in high school, but this book saved me. The example problems in the book show us almost all the techniques we will ever need to know for introductory physics. It's easy-to-understand, yet sophisticated enough to be useful for college physics. It ...

Cracking the AP Physics B Exam, 2008 Edition (College Test Prep)2 reviews
Princeton Review

Princeton Review, 2008

One of the Best Review Books
This book will easily get anyone who really understands it a 5 on the exam, especially if you can score well on the practice tests in the back. It's better for review, rather than learning. If you want an AP book that you can learn from, I suggest using 5 Steps to a 5. I never really understood electromagnetic induction or nuclear physics from my textbook, and this book was even worse for that, ...
