Where the Sidewalk Ends141 reviews
Shel Silverstein

HarperCollins Publishers, 1985

quirky yet sentimental
let me just say first off (and some of you may boo at me for this) that i am not a big fan of poetry, especially those that don't rhyme, layered with so much metaphor wrapped in some sort of old english language. those of you who can appreciate those, know i'm more than eager to submit in the "im not worthy! im not worthy!" throes. call it barbaric or just plain shallow, but i'd rather stick to ...

Audrey Wood

Child's Play International, 1990

My son's favorite board book
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1TTRY7U6R935X In this video I take you through this classic children's book by reading you this short story much the same way I did for my son. He loved this book so much that we bought two so we always had a backup. I read it so many times I knew it by heart. You can't read this book without expressing delight because the story is so charming and ...

The Dark Is Rising Sequence: Silver on the Tree; The Grey King; Greenwitch; The Dark Is Rising; and Over Sea, ...203 reviews
Susan Cooper

Simon Pulse, 1993

Wonderful, wonderful series
This series is my son's absolute FAVORITE. He's 8 and I recently decided to introduce him to the books, and he ate them up. He said he likes how the bad people aren't always perfect, and he likes the way the Drew siblings work together in OVER SEA, UNDER STONE and again in GREENWICH and SILVER ON THE TREE. I'm pretty sure that he didn't understand all the symbolism in THE DARK IS RISING, though ...

Wake Up, I'm Fat!120 reviews
Camryn Manheim

Broadway, 1999

Probably Calista Flockheart's archenemy
Camryn Manheim is a fat activist. Her experiences in a world where people are literally dying to be thin include getting in to the NYU Masters of Fine Arts program, gracing the cover of "fat" magazines such as Radiance and winning an Emmy for her performance on The Practice. She is a likeable, mature and attractive woman who has fought passionately for what she believes in. But does that make ...

Bush-Gorbachev summit plays to mixed reviews in Soviet media (Foreign media analysis)155 reviews
Scott Righetti

Office of Research, U.S. Information Agency, 1991

Brilliant!
Carl Sagan's book and TV series called Cosmos has opened the vast universe to millions and millions of people. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and watching the series. It is not surprising that Cosmos is the best-selling science book ever published in the English language...and the series has been seen by half a billion people! Carl Sagan was able to accomplish this feat by tapping ...

The Prophet262 reviews
Kahlil Gibran

Senate Books, 1994

Eight Decades Later: Still Relevant, Insightful and Eloquent
These days, Kahlil Gibran's "The Prophet" often gets dismissed as "hippie" literature. Yet, this book had been a bestseller LONG before the 1960s. Originally published in 1923, it almost instantly became a hit and even did well through the Great Depression. Today, Gibran's claim to fame is being the third best-selling poet of our time, behind Shakespeare and Lao Tzu... and pretty much entirely ...

Harrington on Hold 'em Ex Strategy for No Limit Tournaments, Vol. 1: Strategic Play229 reviews
Dan Harrington, Bill Robertie

Two Plus Two Pub., 2004

Best book(s) in tournament poker
I think Harrington's book and it's sequels are the best books ever written about no limit hold'em tournaments. The first part of the series covers strategic concepts about tournament poker, the second part tells how to play in the ending of a tournament, and third part is the workbook for reviewing the concepts of first two books. Before reading this book (and the sequels), I have been mostly ...

James W. Rodgers, Frank Capra, ...

Dramatic Pub Co, 1994

It's A Wonderful Film
This film, starring the brilliant James (Jimmy) Stewart, is one of the best movies made since film first started rolling. I don't know that words can really capture the magic of this film. A true holdiay classic, and a great movie! A must have for your collection!

Best Christmas Pagaent Ever
I purchased this book simply to replace my original copy, which I loaned out and which was never returned. Reading this book has been a favorite part of my Christmas for many years. While I regret losing my old copy, I am thankful I will now be able to carry on this tradition.

Dynamic Laws of Prosperity72 reviews
Catherine Ponder

DeVorss & Company, 1985

Abundance!
This book has helped me in my spiritual quest. I have always used silent mantras however this book explained how affirmations spoken out loud work as well. I have been using Ponder's affirmations and feel even more prosperous than I did before! Life is GREAT! Attitude is everything. This book is a wonderful reminder of the power of a positive attitude as well as it provides life-affirming ideas. ...

Jamberry98 reviews
Bruce Degen

Topeka Bindery, 1999

A favorite classic!
This book was a favorite with our first child 10 years ago, and we just bought another copy for our 1-yr.-old! I love the flowing, rhyming prose, and the illustrations allow for so much discussion and interaction. As with Dr. Suess books, I find myself repeating the words throughout the day (like when we're eating berries!) I definitely recommend this book!

Torch Song Trilogy61 reviews
Harvey Fierstein

Signet, 1988

Harvey Fierstein - Genius
Ever since seeing him accept the Tony for his adaptation of "La Cage" I have had a tremendous admiration for the sheer creative genius of Harvey Fierstein. But "Torch song Trilogy" has got to be the icing on the cake; the cream on the top of Mt. Everest; the spark that set off Guy Fawlks Day on the 5th of November in London! And as if the tale wasn't enough, that fantastic narration by Mr. ...

Runny Babbit: A Billy Sook52 reviews

HarperCollins, 2005

May Change the Way You Speak Forever
In a wave of nosthalgia, I bought this Shel Silvertein book. As a little kid I loved "Where the Sidewalk Ends" and the other works. This has to be the best, though. While obviously it is a children's book, adults love it, too. It tickles the tongue and the spirit. When I took it to the office we took turns reading from it and laughed silly. It really lightened the atmosphere. Also a ...

Gallop!: A Scanimation Picture Book (Scanimation Books)53 reviews
Rufus Butler Seder

Workman Publishing Company, 2007

Fun for Everyone
This is the second copy of Gallop I have bought as a gift. The first was for a three year old and the second for an expectant mother. Both recipients were equally delighted with the "scanimation" images. I've already preordered Seder's next book and can't wait to show it and read it to a group of middle school children I teach. This is a book everone will enjoy.

Inspired By The Bible Experience: The Complete Bible75 reviews

Zondervan, 2007

Gift of Jesus best gift; The Bible Experience next best
I thank my teacher friends, who gave me this phenomenal recording as a retirement gift. From the first sound of the music and sound effects, through the incredible narration, to the comprehensibility (thanks to the NIV version), I am mesmerized. I have read the Bible a number of times, but I have never experienced it until now. I thought the readers were going to be identified, but I'm glad ...

The Star Trek Encyclopedia : A Reference Guide to the Future93 reviews
Michael Okuda, Denise Okuda, ...

Star Trek, 1994

Outstanding, but an update is overdue!
I bought this book in 2003, and it covered most of the bases then, but only the movies through 1998 ("Insurrection" IIRC; "Nemesis" is not covered.), and the 5th season of Voyager. It just covered the last season of DS9. And of course it has none of the "Enterprise" series. There have also been events such as the Paramount auction of all the series and movie paraphernalia since then, and ...

Fushigi Yugi the Mysterious Play: Priestess (Fushigi Yugi; The Mysterious Play (Sagebrush))85 reviews
Yuu Watase

Topeka Bindery, 2003

I'm addicted.
Some friends at school recomended this manga, so i got it out from the library. I loved it!!! :) Once I started, I could'nt put it down. I read until I finished it, and then went straight to the library to get out the next book. About a month later, and I still love it (although I'm pacing myself now). In fact, its growing on me, I'm seriously considering buying the whole manga series (and thats ...

The Village Poet and Collection of Writings53 reviews
Leon Newton

1st Books Library, 2002

My Political Science Professor Wrote This!!!
The Village Poet and Collection of Writings is a well organized page turner. Believe this from someone who rarely turns a page. The plot is carefully revealed and the climax is amazing. The Emperor Titus is betrayed by his Chief Administrator Creon, but he finds out too late. Dr. Newton keeps the reader's attention and delivers a play that truly derserves 5 STARS! Go out and buy it.

Ficciones: Four Stories and a Play (Bollingen Series: Miguel de Unamuno)72 reviews
Miguel de Unamuno

Princeton University Press, 1976

An ingenious labyrinthine narrative....
Borges never fails to please, to challenge, to entertain, and more importantly make one's brain shift into high gear! If you are looking for an easy read, don't expect to find it in Ficciones. However, if you are looking for a little cerebral cortex arousal; grab this book and find a cozy spot...you won't be disappointed! Reading with his head instead of his heart, Borges looks to fill his ...
