Worth its weight in gold
This book has enough information packed into it, in a very organized way, to supply my needs for a lifetime. I give this book absolutely the strongest recommendation. IMO you will not regret buying this. For Portuguese I recommend: this book (501 Portuguese Verbs) for a reference, the Larousse Port.-English dictionary, and "Para a Frente" for a grammar. All these books are available on ...

A wonderful work of art!
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight For the ends of Being and ideal Grace. This magical collection of verse was written by the incomparable Elizabeth Barrett during her courtship with Robert Browning. It speaks of a love so deep and yearning to be expressed that it has been acclaimed by ...

Great guide on the basics
This book is written in an easy to follow fashion that I found very helpful and informative. This book should however be considered a cliff-notes or abridged guide as it is light and compact (that was what I was looking for); by no means is an extensive guide on the Portugese langauge. Note: This book is mainly on Portugese as spoken in Portugal not Brazil.

Only one cent! Excellent!
At this price, such a bargain and worth alot more. How could anyone give this one star and say that it's "worthless"? The description clearly states what the book contains. I don't see anything that says that it teaches you a language. there is no reason for a bad rating.

Perfect as always in the Saramago's case
Excellent book. I think most of the 5 stars reviews tell everything about the book and I can't add anything else about the story. I just want to add something about Saramago's style. I'm Brazilian and, of course, I read it in Portuguese. Besides this book, I also read "The Gospel According to Jesus Christ", "Blindness" and "Seeing". Saramago has a very peculiar way of punctuation and this ...

The Book of Wisdom
This book is full of wisdom; it is about dreaming and achieving. It is about appreciating what you have. It is about a treasure that you might have close by and not noticing it. You sometimes don't need to look a lot further to find what you are looking for. It is a book that is full of therapy without the need for Prozac, I am sure that I will go back to this book when I feel down. Follow your ...

"Hello this is God, I'm not in right now..."
It is a testament to Endo's devastating, yet spare prose that the most complex argument against Christianity is boiled down to a simple realization: the silence of God. At the beginning of Silence, a Portuguese priest, Father Sebastian Rodrigues, travels to Japan at the height of Christian persecution in the 17th Century. He knows that Christians are being tortured and put to death by the ...

Excellent Fantasy Series
If you enjoyed Lord of the Rings, and wish you could find another series that captures the scope and grandeur of Tolkiens original, this may be the series for you. I have read more series of fantasy novels than I care to admit to over the past 25 years, and this series is hands down one of the best out there. It is set in a similar world to LOTR with humans, elves, dwarfs, halflings (hobbits), ...

The Beauty in Blindness: A Story of Human Struggle
If you took away everything--your career, your possessions, your loved ones, and even your sense of being in the world--what is left? The answer is chaos. Stripped to the bare bones of life, the characters in this book prove to you what it means to be human. What a beautiful, masterful book. No wonder Saramago has been so highly praised; he more than deserves it. As a side note, if possible, ...

A supplement to the previous review
The previous reviewer suggested that the "ghost" character Pessoa may have been based on an actual person. It's true. Fernando Pessoa was an outstanding Portuguese poet. What's interesting here is that Pessoa wrote under several pen-names, and in some cases he would write praise or criticism in one pan-name of his own writing done in another pen-name. These pen-names were characters in and of ...

Laugh-out-loud funny
Rarely do books make me laugh out loud but these satiric tales of a German philologist and his misadventures had me rolling on the floor. The fact that I'm an academic trained as a philologist certainly adds to my pleasure, and clearly AMS knows the academic world well enough to create a hilarious sendup of the egotism and bombast stomping through the hallowed halls. I must admit that almost ...

This handy book was very helpful in dealing with language situations while traveling in Brazil. I added to tabs to the pages so that I could easier find certain sections--like what to say when meeting people, numbers, things like that.

MARVELOUS
IBERIA is non-fiction memoir of Michener's experiences in Spain. I read the book before I went to Spain and found that Michener was right. He said Spain haunts people who go there. I've been all over the world and Spain is the only place that haunts me in a delicious way. Spain likely was the heart and soul of Imperial Rome. IBERIA is a splendid tale about a splendid place.

Absolutely Wonderful
Absolutely wonderful. Commentaries on world matters, George Bush, the economic crisis, religion, and much, much more by one of the greatest living writers. Erudite, literary, compassionate, provocative. Compare these with the commentary currently available...well, there is no comparison. If you love his novels, you will find the Notebook as compelling. If you have not read his novels perhaps The ...

GREAT for conversational Portuguese
I recently went to Brazil for a week with a group, and used this program along with learning a few phrases recommended by the group to prepare myself. I had about two months to study Portuguese, and I am really surprised at how comfortable I was with the language! I was easily in the top half of the group for how well I could speak Portuguese, and probably more in the top quarter (though many ...
