Ross Smith

Peachpit Pr, 1990

Great introduction to Postscript programming
This book offers clear, simple examples and covers the basic Postscript concepts in a way that makes it easy to apply them to real-life situations. I borrowed this book froma friend, and I have GOT to add it to my library -- a must-have!

LaTeX Graphics Companion, The (2nd Edition) (Tools and Techniques for Computer Typesetting)3 reviews
Michel Goossens, Frank Mittelbach, ...

Addison-Wesley Professional, 2007

Essential resources for LaTeX users
The second edition of the LaTeX Graphics Companion, along the second edition of the LaTeX Companion, are essential resources for LaTeX users. When one first starts using LaTeX, you need one of the commercial books or free on-line books that provide an introduction and overview of LaTeX. Right after that you need the nearly comprehensive Companion books, written by the on-going developers and ...

Greek Homosexuality: Updated and with a new Postscript6 reviews
K. J. Dover

Harvard University Press, 2007

The social uses of homosexual pursuit
What I found particularly informative was Dover's fascinating theory on the social use of Homosexual pursuit among the citizen class. Particularly the information that hubris was a crime in democratic Athens. What has this to do with homosexuality, you ask? the first half of the book explains. Ancient greek homosexuality in no way resembles the modern version and it is mind-blowing to see how ...

Concluding Unscientific Postscript 1 : Kierkegaard's Writings, Vol 12.16 reviews
Soren Kierkegaard

Princeton University Press, 1992

A comic tour de force
To begin with, the title is a joke. This is the in keeping with the putative author of the piece. Johannes Climacus (who is named for the Seventh Century Hermit and Monk, St. John Climacus) is a humorist. A humorist, as he will point out, is someone on edge of becoming religious, but is not yet religious and, in fact, may never become religious. That being said, back to the title. ...

On the Shoulders of Giants: A Shandean Postscript4 reviews
Robert K. Merton

University of Chicago Press, 1993

Academia Transfixed
'On the Shoulders of Giants' (which shall hereafter be referred to as OTSOG) is the quintessential study of the nature of academicism. It is thinly disguised as a dissertation into the origin (and originality) of Newton's famous aphorism 'If I have seen farther, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.' However, once the reader finds himself confronted by what might or might not be an ...

PostScript(R) Language Tutorial and Cookbook (APL)4 reviews
Adobe Systems Inc.

Addison-Wesley Professional, 1985

Highly recommended as a beginner's resource
Imagine this: you are tasked to be responsible for understanding the PostScript language. Perhaps because you need to troubleshoot printing issues, or because you want to write specialized drivers for a custom system. Where to start? Many recommend that you can get these sorts of resources on the web for free. That's is true, but I prefer to take into account the true cost of doing so. I ...

PDF Hacks: 100 Industrial-Strength Tips & Tools11 reviews
Sid Steward

O'Reilly Media, Inc., 2004

I could have used this book on several occassions
With PDF files everywhere from web sites to help files, sooner or later you will run into a situation where you need to do something to a PDF file. For me the first time I realized I needed to do something I could not was when I needed to take one and convert it to a Word format so I could quickly outline the high points to study for a certification exam. After several hours I finally got it ...

The Name of the Rose: including the Author's Postscript271 reviews
Umberto Eco

Harvest Books, 1994

murder mystery masterpiece
This story very much appealed to the role-playing game aficionado in me. The atmosphere felt both elaborate and decrepit with a tinge of ancient tradition. The period and location definitely played a major role in dressing the characters. As a consequence, they are left with no choice but to exhibit their true nature. Carefully planned but never felt contrived. Exquisite example of Eco handiwork.

PostScript(R) by Example6 reviews
Henry McGilton, Mary Campione

Addison-Wesley Professional, 1992

wonderful book for PostScript novices
This is an extremely helpful book, *if* you are a little familiar with PostScript and want to know more. Although it suffers a bit from lack of organization, the subsections are fairly self-contained and are generally extremely clear. As a hobbyist, my primary interest is in PostScript drawing rather than text manipulation, and this book has good coverage of drawing and graphics. My ...

Global Business Today, Postscript 2003 with CD, Map, and PowerWeb
Charles W. L. Hill

Irwin/McGraw-Hill, 2002

Global Business Today has become an established text in the International Business market for its excellent, but concise coverage of the key global issues including the cultural context for global business, cross-border trade and investment, the global monetary system and competition in the global environment. GBT's concise chapters give a general introduction to international business - emphasizing the environmental factors, with less coverage ...

PostScript(R) Language Program Design (APL)2 reviews
Adobe Systems Inc.

Addison-Wesley Professional, 1988

Caution: Not a beginner's guide to postscript!
I consider myself a hardcore programmer, but I have not programmed with postscript before. When my job required postscript options added to the printer drivers, I started with this book. I now believe it would have been better to start with a beginner's guide and a reference manual on postscript. This book is great if you are already programming in postscript and want to better your skills with it

Realism and the Aim of Science: From the Postscript to the Logic of Scientific Discovery2 reviews
Karl Popper

Routledge, 1992

Most impressive defense of Popper's epistemology
Popper has presented his controversial views of induction and the nature of scientific discovery in a number of essays and books, but no where does he advance some of his seemingly paradoxical views better than in "Realism and the Aim of Science." At first blush, Popper's views of the nature of scientific inquiry seem to defy common sense. He believes, for instance, that the distinguishing ...

Postscript Language Reference8 reviews
Adobe Systems

Addison-Wesley Professional, 1999

Essential reference
This manual - the 'Red Book' - is absolutely necessary for programming in PostScript. It is the only complete reference guide to the language, and is so well-organized and thorough that no one else even bothers to publish a complete third-party guide. Many other books have been published on PostScript - and many are excellent - but they are books you will buy in addition to, rather than ...

Postscript to the Name of the Rose2 reviews
Umberto Eco

Harcourt, 1984

A breath of fresh air
Dare I say that I enjoyed this slim paperback more than I did the novel itself! Perhaps I am one of the unsophisticated readers the author alludes to at one point. A must for any student of the novel form. Thank you Professor Eco for a chance to peek into the pathways of your mind.Incidentally the edition I've read goes by the title "Reflections on The name of..." Also read "Six walks in the ...

The Boss's Survival Guide24 reviews
Bob Rosner, Alan Levins

McGraw-Hill, 2001

Readable and practical advice.
This is a good, general book for managers, especially those who own or manage a small business and don't have the resources of a corporation for guidance. In spite of the glut of business management books on the market, it still amazes me to witness managers repeat common mistakes in the areas this book covers: how to hire, how to fire, how to conduct and document performance reviews, etc. This ...
