The Cognitive Style of PowerPoint: Pitching Out Corrupts Within, Second Edition48 reviews
Edward R. Tufte

Graphics Press, 2006

An enjoyable indictment
Tufte makes a cogent case against PowerPoint in this sleek, catalog-sized volume, blaming it for, among other things, the Columbia disaster. He recommends paper handouts as an alternative for anyone presenting serious science, numbers-intensive business, or anything else requiring thought. Does he go a bit overboard? Certainly. But that's what makes the book fun rather than pedantic. Everyone in ...

slide:ology: The Art and Science of Creating Great Presentations89 reviews
Nancy Duarte

O'Reilly Media, 2008

Great Practical Guide
This is a great practical guide on developing better presentations. It covers all aspects of the process from developing the right messages to story boarding to the use of space on the final slides. All of the concepts brought forth are clear and can be implemented if you want to develop a high quality presentation. On a personal note; I despise sitting through a pitch that basically has the ...

Office 2008 for Macintosh: The Missing Manual20 reviews

Pogue Press, 2008

Nice book, faster than an internet search
As a reasonably experienced Office 2007 user I was constantly fighting to find solutions to "quirks" with the Office 2008 suite for Mac (i.e., what's the comparable Office 2008 key stroke for F-4 in Excel? Surprise, it's CMD-T). Don't let them fool you, the PC version of Office is much more versatile than the Mac version; but the Mac has more than enough virtues to overcome these deficiencies. ...

Office 2010 For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech))1 review
Wallace Wang

For Dummies, 2010

Great tool to take full advantage of the new Office
Office 2010 does not have as many changes compared to the previous version as Office 2007 did. That being said; most of the changes are "under the hood" improvements to make everything much more efficient. This book does a very good job of summarizing these changes, where to find every imaginable tool and how to customize the ribbon. If you're a very seasoned Office user (one who honestly ...

Beyond Bullet Points: Using Microsoft® Office PowerPoint® 2007 to Create Presentations That Inform, Motivate, ...31 reviews
Cliff Atkinson

Microsoft Press, 2007

Had My Audience in the Palm of My Hand
Beyond Bullet Points helped me to create my very first and very successful PowerPoint presentation before an audience of 80 people. Until I found the book, I was grasping at how to synthesize the vast amount of details that went into a complex two-year project I worked on. Beyond Bullet Points helped me to untangle my thinking into an organized, powerful presentation. I read and highlighted the ...

Presentation Zen163 reviews

New Riders, 2008

The Antidote for Death By PowerPoint
A great book that reminds every would-be presenter to keep it simple (stupid). Lots of real-world examples. If you have to give a presentation this is required reading. Having said that, it does not address handouts in detail (nor should it). Pages 66-67 are dedicated to basic dos and don'ts on handouts, but you'll need to look elsewhere for advice on that aspect.

Clear and to the Point: 8 Psychological Principles for Compelling PowerPoint Presentations15 reviews

Oxford University Press, USA, 2007

The most helpful PowerPoint book that I've seen
I have recently been preparing to give presentations during academic job interviews and although I've given countless ppt presentations, I still felt ineffective in my use of the medium. I have tried reading other books (Why Most PowerPoint Presentations Suck, for example), but have found little use in them. This book, though based on visual processing research, is presented clearly and ...

Teach Yourself VISUALLY Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 (Teach Yourself VISUALLY (Tech))12 reviews
Lisa A. Bucki

Visual, 2006

It is So Easy!
The "Teach Yourself Visually" books claim to be the "Fast and Easy" Way to Learn. I totally agree, I found that when I used one of their books and really learned the software I was spoiled. I got used to the way the books are set up; I love the full color pages and easy instructions with individual tasks. Sometimes I just need to remember how to do one little thing, and with other books I would ...

resonate: Present Visual Stories that Transform Audiences
Nancy Duarte

Wiley, 2010

Reveals the underlying story form of all great presentations that will not only create impact, but will move people to action Presentations are meant to inform, inspire, and persuade audiences. So why then do so many audiences leave feeling like they've wasted their time? All too often, presentations don't resonate with the audience and move them to transformative action. Just as the author's first book helped presenters become visual ...

A Must for Upgrading to Office 2007
These quick reference guides are fantastic-a must for easy reference when upgrading from Office 2003 to 2007. I got one set for my office, since I'm the tech person and must answer tons of questions when we upgrade. Got the main IT office interested in purchasing them in bulk as well, since no money for training for this upgrade for the base.

Sams, 2008

eXcellent resource for eXcelling with Xcelsius
I've spent a lot of time in 2008 and 2009 creating Xcelsius dashboards for various clients. A book that I have found very helpful is Loren Abdulezer's Xcelsius 2008 Dashboard Best Practices. According to the bio on the back of the book, Loren is editor-in-chief of Xcelsius Journal, the online magazine for Xcelsius users. Loren's book provides a comprehensive view on Xcelsius 2008 functionality ...
