Great for the classroom
If you're teaching a class on the image of women in television, Bonnie J. Dow's text is perfect for undergraduate students. It is very thorough in it's texts at examining Mary Tyler Moore, Murphy Brown, etc. It's a timeline of the women's movement through media images and analyzes them in terms of the context of the how society depicted the decades rather than in terms of the feminist movement.

This book really shines with it's postnatal exercise program
The book includes exercises for the entire 9 months of pregnancy plus a 5-month postnatal exercise plan. The exercises in this book are easily done at home with minimal equipment (some exercises require light hand weights.) There are plenty of photos (though not every exercise has a photo) and good explanations on how to do each exercise. I found the exercises challenging, but not too ...

Outstanding Television History Lesson for All Interested
Although I initially intended on simply reviewing Bogle's masterwork, I feel that along with a personal reflection on the book, it is necessary to contradict statements made by an earlier reviewer. Yes, the book is "exhaustive" but never is it boring. Every profile of African-American actors on the tube is carefully detailed and extensively covered, with little asides that make for intriguing ...

A Truly Complete Resource for Die-Hard Dallas Fans
Barbara A. Curran did a phenomenal job putting together Dallas: The Complete Story of the World's Favorite Prime-Time Soap. For starters, this book is THICK and packed with information. It is a timeline of Dallas, beginning with concept development by producers, selection of cast and development of the characters, and selection of filming locations. What I found exciting about the ...

hands on guide
This book is geared towards the synopsys synthesis tools (as evident in the title). It gives brief explanations about vhdl and verilog coding style (which can be found in many other books). The actual useful part was that the book explored the commonly used synthesis commands in synopsys, and also had explanations on the steps to follow to succesfully synthesize rtl. These ideas can also be ...

A serious examination of some funny shows.
Rather than another nostalgia-derived look at fondly remembered but essentially lame sitcoms, this book reflects critics' picks of the very best examples of the genre, then examines them with the seriousness and insight they deserve. The author is an expert on the subject--he also wrote the definitive work on the Dick Van Dyke Show--and he treats each of the ten shows, from I Love Lucy to ...

There should be more books like this...
The West Wing (TWW)is my favourite television series so I was delighted that this academic book had been written about it. For me (a newcomer to Political/Social/Culture theory) the book served as a nice introduction to these, as an interesting look at the role of/perception of the president in the US and as a pleasant reminder of some of the many excellent episode s of TWW. The one thing ...
The Primetime Presidency of Ronald Reagan: The Era of the Television Presidency
Robert E. Denton Jr.
Praeger Publishers

Beginning in the 1970s, the public has turned to the media for information and guidance in selecting their presidents. Television has become the primary means of getting to know the issues and candidates. This monograph examines the mediazation of the U.S. presidency, as exemplified by President Reagan's role as "the great communicator." Specifically, Denton analyzes the use of television as an instrument of image-making and governing, the role ...

Loaded with discussion/conversation material
"Watching What We Watch" is very readable, thought-provoking, and topical. The authors have put together a model for how to watch television, offering an insights that are sure to prompt discussion. From "The Simpsons" to "ER", from "Moesha" to "Will and Grace," the book gave me pause, asking questions about where God fit into my viewing habits. I passed this book along to our Discussion Group ...

Entertaining, insightful, and innovative!
Hi, I found Mr. Spelling's book entertaining, insightful and innovative because he candidly talks about his humble beginnings growing up in a poor neighborhood in Dallas, being taunted and teased mercilessly, and then discusses how hard he worked to get where he is today! As Candy Spelling, Mr. Spelling's wife and mother of Tori and Randy Spelling, argues in his book, they worked hard and ...

multifaceted, revealing poems of contemporary life
Linmark's poems are lively, often comical depictions of the eclectic elements and multiple possible directions of contemporary life. With the Philippines, Hawaii, and San Francisco in his background, he effortlessly, sometimes profligately, conjures up the diverse parts of circumstances. While these are paradoxical or overwhelming for many, with Linmark, they are bound by his energy and ...

very informative
This is a good book to really go deep in the US history of television. Sometimes it is hard to keep track with all that different tails of development, but at the end of the day you're informed and knowing about the subject. Nicely written with lots of sources, names and examples.

If you're a fan, save up and get this
It's past time that someone put some thought and effort into a book of this nature. We've had "Science Fiction TV" guides before, and they've uniformly been written by authors whose axes could be heard grinding away throughout as they slagged shows they disliked and drooled over shows they (often unaccountably) were fans of. Mark Phillips and Frank Garcia have done a good job of research and ...
