Grabbed ahold of my attention and didn't let go...
Phillip Margolin is one of my favorite crime novelists, partly due to the fact he lives in my hometown of Portland, Oregon and usually places his stories there. I had the pleasure of finally getting to the top of the list at the library for his latest book Executive Privilege. I personally feel this is one of his best novels. It grabbed my attention and didn't let go until the final page. ...

A look into a mind of an everyday woman who did wonderful things
One upping a man in tennis thirty five years ago has given Tennis star Billie Jean King much to think about. "Pressure is a Privilege: Lessons I've Learned from Life and the Battle of the Sexes" is her autobiography of her life as a figure for feminists and a model for gender relations. With a good dose of common sense and wisdom, "Pressure is a Privilege" is a memoir worth reading for a look ...

Most of us know all too well why Ariana Osgood landed herself in the Brenda T. Trumball Correctional Facility for Women. And for those who don't, it's simply because she murdered Thomas Pearce, the one she loved but who turned on her. Ariana fully understands what she did was wrong, but she believes that spending the rest of her life in this correctional facility is a bit too much. Even though ...

Inspirational, Quick Read
This is a great book. I read it in less than a day. It tells the story of a man who was on top, a member of Skull and Bones from Yale, part of a privileged society, someone who spoke with Hemingway, Thurber, Frost, Eliot and other literary giants and then made a career in advertising, only to be thrown out of the society because he was too expensive and no longer young (at 53). He spends the next ...

Excellent Quick Read
I enjoyed the writing style and it was something easy to relate to as a lot us are familiar with starbucks. The descriptions on the hard work and different backgrounds coming together were very insightful. A lot of us are familiar with the daily struggles of a job, having a living, especially when falling from a place of priviledge.

Thoughtful, practical advice
As the mother of four children ages 7 to 17, I found Dr. Levine's The Price of Privilege to be an invaluable book. Written like a close, wise, warm friend, Dr. Levine tells it like it is, does not sugar coat the responsibilities that parents have, and where they tend to mess up, but maintains a sympathetic tone throughout. Most important to me was the chapter for women about the challenges of ...

Great insights
This is a great book that will ennable you to see aspects of our culture that are so interwoven in our everyday experience that we're not even aware of them. It helped me see what we take for granted and understand what we can all do to make changes in our society so that it will become a place where people are truly equal. We all need to read this book and become more aware so things can ...

A Real Page-Turner
Highly recommend this book. Harriet had a celebrated life like her more famous older sister, Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire. Harriet's world included a who's-who of late 18th-early 19th century English society. If you liked Amanda Foreman's book on Georgiana, you will really enjoy this book on Harriet...a star in her own right.

Gripping Tale of Murder and Yellow Journalism
I stumbled across this book in the library and am so glad I picked it up. Having never heard of Roland Molineux before (and not knowing much about Yellow Journalism), I had no idea what to expect, but I was not disappointed. This is a story of greed, lust, and exploitation, all disguised under a prim Victorian facade. Chapters are short and to the point, and make for much page-turning suspense. I ...

Proper Streets: Growing up in Groveland
Members of Duke University's Sigma Nu fraternity are thugs. At least, one could get that impression from walking by their section and hearing such musical selections as "Baby I'm a Thug" and "Nothin' but a G Thang" that are frequently boom from within. Adopting parts of the gangsta persona for well-monied groups of future investment bankers and may be relatively consequence free but may not be ...

MUST READ
Any woman who is striving to be a true woman of God should read this book. It is short but packed with truth. With Mary as the model von Hildebrand shows that it is truly a privilege to be a woman and that we live that out by imitating Mary the woman, par excellance, and not by being crazy femininists. Men should read this as well because it will help them grow in their own manhood and ...

Beware the Claim of State Secrets
No one questions that governments need to keep some things secret. There is no reason that I should be able to get detailed blueprints on the newest of submarines, for instance, nor need I decode the latest messages going to the generals in Afghanistan. In matters of national security, keeping secrets even from citizens is only sensible. There is a problem, though, that it is the national ...

Written by four authors from different disciplinary backgrounds, this reader promotes a commitment to an intersectional approach to teaching race, class, gender and sexuality. Unlike most books of its kind, it highlights the duality of privilege and oppression and the effects that race, gender, and sexuality have on our lives. This reader includes poems, reflective literary prose, historical events and documents, images drawn from the media, ...

Non-watered down gospel truth
Andrew Wommack has been criticized and rebuked for years. I've been studying many of his teachings over the past several months and honestly could not find a justifiable reason that warranted the vicious responses from clergy and like. After listening to this one and reading the literature backup, I finally see where they're coming from. The War Is Over touches on arguably the most sensitive ...

You just cannot phantom what Mr. Pelzer went through as a child. The courage is unbelievable and I admire him so very much. There is too much child abuse in society and children are tormented not to speak out because they love their parents the ones who are abusing. Mr. Pelzer's books are about himself and his horrible life as a child, teenager and young man. You have to read these books to ...

Well-Written, Courageous, Not Nearly as Angry as I'd Feared
I am teaching a master's-level diversity course this fall, and was looking for material that was a bit more current. I've read about 2/3 of this book and so far am very impressed by the breadth of the issues and the honesty with which they've been addressed. This topic is an uncomfortable one, no matter how delicately it's handled, and I think the best we can hope for is first-person accounts ...

Very Good Exploration of Racism
The author does a very good job of bringing to the attention of the reader one of the major sources of racism: white privilege. While it is understandably rejected by those who benefit from racist practices and beliefs, the book does provoke people (who are open about the issue) to reconsider their involvement in such privilege.
