Informative biography of the man, his times and his movies
Irving Thalberg (1899-1936) was the legendary head of production at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer during the "golden age" of film making in the 1930s. He was associated with a wide range of classic films ranging from silents (The Big Parade 1925), ensemble films (Grand Hotel 1932), adventure films (Mutiny on the Bounty 1935) and even Marx Brothers comedy (A Night At The Opera 1935). I'm not a Producer, But I play one on TV
I'm not a producer. I'm a graphic designer. And from what I can tell from Mr. Turman's book, there are a lot of parallels between the two. In fact, that's why I bought the book in the first place: I suddenly found my creative-self undergoing mitosis, and generating a business counter-part. That's the part that doesn't just create a job, but has to sell and manage it. During my frustrations with ...

Nicely done.
First things first: I really enjoyed reading this, and am lucky I got it at the beginning of the Thanksgiving weekend -- otherwise, I would have missed some work! The pacing was great (the first few pages really suck you in to the story), and the main character was very well developed. A couple quibbles: the secondary characters were a bit two dimensional, especially his female coworkers. ...

I love this book! It finally brings to light for the average popular music consumer as well as the scholarly directed the vital function that has made the producer the king of the studio. Quick Review: If you buy only book ever, this is it! Dave is very specific, gives you the verbage that you can make you own, gives multiple stories of people who have built their book themselves and from scratch, and gives you the plan. Did you noticed I said "gives" a few times? I can't emphasize it enough, this book is a gift to those aspire to become big producers but just need the guidance ...

Insight to the secrets: Have a plan A to plan Z.
This book was required reading for FSU's Film Producing class. Usually the film books we are recommended to read are redundant and old news. This book is far from that. It's educational to the point of strategy and for sure a morality boost. This is a Yes You Can book. It gives you a plan A and then the Z for when all the other letters won't work.

Major-Label Artist & Producer Highly Recommends
This is my favorite book I've read on the industry. I am a recording artist and record producer and I've never read a book so honest and valuable. The version I got was older and full of obsolete info, but that didn't decrease it's value at all. If anything some of it makes for a good laugh. All in all I HIGHLY recommend this book if you're interested in or involved in the music industry.

Invaluable Resource To Understanding The Art & Science Of Game Production
After shipping over 50 different titles in 15 years (working in various capacities), I thought I knew it all. However, after seeing Dan's common-sense approach and mastery of the production cycle beautifully laid out, I suddenly found myself an aspiring student in several areas. In the others, it was an affirmation of what I know, believe, and have personally experienced. If you are an ...

Not just for students; great for anyone who loves movies!
Of all the books I've read on filmmaking, lighting for film, etc., Buck Houghton's is the most pleasant and interesting! This book is concise, non-critical, and informative. I really appreciated the stories he told from his years in "The Twilight Zone," plus other anecdotes and examples he sprinkled throughout the book. As noted earlier, it's not just good for film students; anyone who has ...

Essential reading!
I consider this the prime resource for gaining knowledge into the very broad spectrum of responsibilities that go along with being a legitimate music producer. Though some of the book addresses the current evolution of the recording industry, most of the material concerning the producer's role is timeless. I'm still surprised at how in-depth and detailed this is, given all of the variables ...

Good reference but something missing
It covers a lot of things that a neophyte producer might not think of but it doesn't cover a few things that I would've expected. One thing- it doesn't mention anything about forming an LLC (Limited Liability Company) in relationship to producing theater and there's almost no coverage of negotiating an "enhanced" production with an existing non-profit and commercial venture which I believe is ...
