Tried, Tested and True
This book even though a little startling at first. Brings to light some very hidden truths. These truths have been hidden from knowledge. The Bible states that "we shall know the truth, and the truth shall set us free". We need truth in a world full of uncertainties and lies. Truth brings knowledge. It is our Plumbline to measure everything with. We need this to survive. Life is empty in ...
An Arab Philosophy of History: Selections from the Prolegomena of Ibn Khaldun of Tunis

The most original of all philosophers
Khaldum was an amazing person. Preceeding Machiavelli by 300 years he is more profound, more knowledgable and better read than the great Italian prince. Add to this the fact that Machiavelli comes from the Renaissance with all that that indicates while Kaldum came from a civilization that was - at the very least - morbund. How to account for such a book from such a time? He was hounded by ...

A Fascinating Classic
Although published in the early 1900s and outdated in certain areas, Prolegomena to the Study of Greek Religion is still an essential read for anyone interested in Greek Religion. Perhaps the best description of the book would be to call it the Greek Golden Bough. In this classic work, Harrison sought to uncover the primitive substratum of Greek religion, so rather than focusing on the Olympian ...

Stuart Hackett Rides Again
This is the 2nd Edition of an epochal treatise in rationalistic theism. The 1st Edition is extremely rare, having been printed in hardbound by Moody Press in 1957 in a printing of only 2,000. Unfortunately, the plates were destroyed. The bottom line of this book is to show how to self-referentially analyze statements to eliminate the possibility of opposing views, and to prove the ...

Please make sure your trays are in the upright and locked...
This book is simply amazing. Walter Ong focuses on an epistemology of hearing, contra Plato. Simply amazing. If you want to know what covenantal epistemology is, and what it means to "hear" God in the person and work of Jesus Christ, then pick this book up and read it, pen in one hand, coffee in the other. There is a lot of good stuff here for anyone interested in Luther's theology as well, ...

Good translation of a classic
This is one of the classics of reformed theology. Bavinck provides rich overviews and profound views on the topics under discussion. If you are not always satisfied, be sure that Bavinck was neither by the end of his life. However, reading this volume will prevent you from offering cheap solutions to difficult questions. (Reformed) theologians can only gain from a critical (re)engagement with ...

Ah, the 19th century
Those were the days when no-name mathematicians wrote meticulous treatises on classical geometry with at least two or three proofs of every theorem, copious historical notes and quotations in original languages, and, to top it all off, no less than one thousand exercises (or "examples", as we like to call them). Simply wonderful. For those who deny themselves the pleasure of working through the ...

What Was He Thinking!
Metaphysics? Come on, Kant! Do you think anyone worries about this dross anymore? Go back to your poetry, your punk rock reviews: you were much better at critiquing modern America than anything else. Too bad you have chosen to waste your talents on a subject so dry.

Kant wrote "Cliff's Notes" to his own Critique
READ THIS BEFORE THE CRITIQUE! In the Prolegomena, Kant's express purpose is to summarize his maddening "Critique of Pure Reason" and it is immensely helpful. Whereas the "Critique" shows no mercy, the "Prolegomena" is very accessible and friendly to a first timer. It is still difficult, but this is to be expected considering the nature of Kant's project. If you do go on to the "Critique" after ...

A must read:not only for educators-but for anyone who cares.
When I started reading this book, I thought it was just one of those academic-theoretical texts I`m familiar with. But something kept me going, and I think it was the feeling that under the academic language, lies some kind of real experience. The first chapters contain good theoretical criticism of the way in which schools create, exacerbate and ignore the distress of children. Prof. Lampert ...

Excellent, Definetely the best translated so far!!!!
This Book traces the many different theories on the Quran including the different opinions of Islamic scholars throughout the centuries while at the same time giving his own theory on the authenticity of the Quran. Although it is a extremely advanced level of study which most people would need at least some background on Islamic history and terminology it is by far one of the best books ...

Extremely helpful
As a student with a great deal of interest in Heidegger's ontological inquiry, I found this to be an indispensable supplement to Being and Time. Where Being and Time seems unbearably difficult to understand, History of the Concept of Time offers clarification. Since it is a collection of lecture/notes, the writing is usually more straight-forward, which as we know is a blessing when it ...

A bit of balance, please!
Since the previous reviewer spent so much time loathing their own inability to understand Kant's writings, I believe a higher rating is in order. From one who CAN understand at least the Prolegomena, I recommend it wholeheartedly to the philosopher who wishes to understand an alternative to Hume and other skeptics.

The first step into a different world
On of the mainissues of the Work of Balthasar is the desire to liberate the theology from its narrow constructed house. He was of the opinion that the greek philosophy does not give the sufficient categories to understand in depth the salvation mystery as made trough the living God. Therefore he tried to retell the whole drama of salvation, the drama of Gods encarnation, the drama of the relation ...

"An Impressive Collection of St Augustine's Works"
This volume is comprised of the largest collection of St Augustine's letters, which are by far superior to the much less bulky and more expensive Loeb edition. These letters are indispensable for historians of the period; they display the religious conflicts of the time, between warring Christian sects in North Africa and between the pagans who were in revolt due to Theodosius' all out ban on ...

Will Revolutionize Reformed Protestant Historiography
First, in response to a previous reviewer: a single sentence lifted from a page deep within this erudite work does not prove that its design is solely for Th.D. & D.D students. The fact of the matter is, while certain isolated sections are for the advanced student, any learned layperson with a passion for historical theology will be able to understand what's contained in these four volumes. ...

People always think I'm making some sort of joke or being funny when I tell 'em they should read this here book if they're having trouble sleeping. I'm not. Put as much energy and effort into understanding it that you can. That will knock you out ...

The great Thomas Hill Green at his best.
Thomas Hill Green died of blood poisoning in 1882, and his arguably greatest work -- _Prolegomena to Ethics_, which he hadn't quite finished -- was published a year later under the editorship of A.C. Bradley. While certainly not setting out a complete system of ethics, this great work supplies both a refutation of "empiricism" and a metaphysical foundation for ethics in rationalistic Idealism. ...

An excellent book.
This book is mainly a translation of an Italian work by Luzzatto (Shadal) from 1836. Although I am familiar with many works on Hebrew grammar, I never knew about Shadal's book. It is amazing, full of much interesting data. A lot of it is outdated, of course, but still worthwhile. Rubin has added lots of notes to the translation, which are quite helpful. He has also added a long section giving ...
