A waste of time and money
This book is beyond basic; it doesn't even work as a 'For Dummies' title. There was no useful information about setting up a business or finding clients. Plus, the spelling and grammar were inconsistent throughout -- ironic for a book on becoming a freelance writer, proofreader, copyeditor, etc. I returned this book and look forward to getting my money back!

Indispensible
I have had my third edition since 1969. It is indispensible. If my students would use one, I would not need mine!!

Lots of good advice but...
...a bit too British. Some of the information seems specifically applicable to Cambridge University Press, and will need to be supplemented by guides to U.S. practice.

Wouldn't write without it
Also know as the AP style guide, this book should be every copywriter's and journalist's bookshelf. This is the definitive guide to punctuation, grammar and writing style for magazine and newspaper articles as well as most business writing. And it is vastly different from the style of writing most of us learned in school, which follows the Chicago Manual of Style. If you are thinking about ...

After editing for over twenty years, this book taught me how to not only think like a writer and editor, but to also think like a business person. It covers what references are needed and why, how to edit in an organized manner, and how to maintain consistency and clarity in ...

Excellent reference: full of practical information.
Martin Manser's Collins Dictionary for Writers & Editors is a great little reference book as it goes straight to the more problematic issues concerning spelling, usage, and grammar, such as the spelling of compound words and the use of punctuation marks in written English. This especially applies to the use of hyphens within compound words which varies considerably from country to country and ...

Stay AWAY!
This book is a looseleaf collection that does not teach anything at all about proofreading. I had hoped to see some pages of marked text. Nothing! The papers have an abundance of errors for you to proofread for yourself, but not a word about how to do it. The collection was designed for use with an instructor who would tell you what to do, leaving you to practice on the sheets that ...
