Hero of the Underground: A Memoir

I wasn’t afraid of death. How could I be? I lived under death’s shadow every day. When you swallow eighty Vicodin, twenty sleeping pills, drink a bottle of vodka, and still survive, a certain sense of invulnerability stays with you. When you continually use drugs with the kind of reckless determination that I did, the limit to how much heroin or crack you can ingest is not defined in dollar amounts, but in the amounts your body can ...

DSM-IV Purchase
Recently misplaced my DSM-IV quick-reference manual and needed one desperately for my work. Ordered from Amazon and had my replacement within a week. This little book is a must when you are working within a tight schedule so I really appreciate having Amazon and its sellers as a resource for replacing hard to find items such as the DSM-IV manual.

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-IV-TR
This book is one textbook that will stay with me throughout my coursework. It is very helpful in understanding mental issues and how to decide proper diagnosis. It is well written and easy to navigate. I definitely recommend also getting DSM made easy with this book as the case examples really are helpful.

How to ruin your kid's life 101
My heart bleeds for Nic-he never stood a chance with these parents! Though the author clearly loves his son-he did him no favors by treating him like his best pal instead of a son. Taking him to parties where people do drugs, having strings of girlfriends in and out of his life. He cheated on Nic's mother, moved in with the girlfriend and her kid. Then he gets dumped by her-more psychological ...

Impulse by Ellen Hopkins
A friend of mine owned this book first and lent it to me a couple weeks ago. I actually just finished it today. This is definitely one of the best books I have ever read. Every aspect of this book is pretty much flawless. This book is so good I caught myself reading it for hours at a time...and I never read. It's just that good. I will absolutely be buying this book for myself...I hate to see it ...

saved my life
I wrote a review years ago after I read this book. Still today, regardless of all the notoriety, I give thanks to James for writing this book. Unless someone has walked in the shoes of very early sobriety and recovery from drug addiction as well as alcohol abuse there can be no understanding of how powerful this book is. Bottom line: it saved my life and my MIND. Without this book God only ...

Much Improved Fifth Edition.
Any book of thys type that has gone through five editions has to have something going for it, and This book has many. Perhaps the most important is the writing style which is as light and casual as it can be considering the subject. The goal is, of course, to prepare the student for a career. The book combined instructional material with case histories that illustrate how a particular case, ...

an uneven but generally interesting memoir
"Girl, Interrupted", probably known better by the film adaptation, is a memoir of a woman recounting the two years she spent in a mental institution in the 1960s when she was a teenager. Some liken it to a "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" but from a woman's perspective. But this analogy doesn't work for me. Firstly, the institution in question is not some barbaric hell hole. While decidedly ...

Great resource!!
A friend, who is working on her LCSW clinical hours, recommended this book. I am an MSW student and while studying methods for doing psychosocial assessments this book was a very valuable resource. It has words and phrases that are clear, succinct, and convey meaning quickly and clearly. I highly recommend it for all MSW students, social workers, and LCSW's.

Finally................................
After 26 years of thinking, "I should be over it", I now know its part of my body, not just my brain. I remember yelling out loud, THATS IT, and thinking I felt better immediately. I wasn't a loser, basket case mental job, but "my body remembers". I gave the book to my therapist, hoping she can help others. I actually contacted author to thank her, and she has a new book in the process. Thank ...

Great First Novel
I have read this book many times. The first time I read it, I was an angsty teenager curious about the methods others utilized to "escape" their pain. Reading "Cut" did not make me want to run out and injure myself; in fact, it actually removed any naive idea I might have had about the therapeutic effects of self-mutilation. It is both irresponsible and ignorant to blame a novel for what is a ...

the madness of scholarship
Many academics and scholars border on creative madness, take Kierkegaard and Nietzsche for example. This book is marvellous reading since the dull subject of dictionary making is enlivened by eccentric personalities and mental disturbance. It reveals how a dictionary as prestigious as the Oxford English Dictionary was put together. Any author who can make such a dry subject as exciting as a ...

A great guide for beginning students in need of a crutch
I recommend this text for all social work, psychology, psychiatry and medicine students who will be conducting assessments with psychiatric clients/patients. This is an excellent guide which offers direct lines of questioning for easy reference in conducting a competency based assessment for diagnostic purposes. The price is right and it's so small students can keep it with them at all times. ...

A Refreshing Read On The Christian Faith
This is one of most refreshing books I have read in long time on the Christion faith. The author gives you a snapshot of how the faith is to be lived out, which he draws from His own experince of growing in the Christian faith. He keeps you wanting to read until the very end. Brian writes a book from his heart while on this journey of faith that makes life pratical and real without any ...

An Illness Once Removed
Ms. Manguso has written a medically graphic but affecting account of her battle with an auto-immune disease. Written in brief paragraphs with short chapters, the author is clealy recalling a bad dream that she rather not recall. A poet, her writing is lyrical and conversational. Once the reader starts her story, you will not put it down and it is easily read in one sitting. But it is a book that ...
