In the two decades retailing tropicals and invertebrates I always recommended Thiel as the ultimate read for serious enthusiasts and professionals. This one is a true "must have."

Reef Tank Owner's Manual

Excellent introduction to reefkeeping
A few years back I had the pleasure of working at an aquarium store dealing with fresh water, marine and pond fish. In my spare time I would read the books we had for sale, this book being one of them. It inspired me to try a small reef tank at home. The information was packed with helpful advice and it wasn't so "technical" that it was hard to understand. Obviously it's a bit dated as ...
The Marine Fish and Invert Reef Aquarium: Theory, Technique and Instruments

Albert J. Theil
Aardvark Pr, 1988
This book is dates, but still filled with good information
This book is a bit outdated. However, it is well written and contains lots of useful, practical advice on how to successfully set up a Marine Reef Aquarium. I saw used copies of it for as low as $0.50 on Amazon and that's quite a bargain. You won't get a lot of pretty pictures, but you'll get useful information that will save you a bundle in dead fish and invertebrates!

Not often you find literature and mathematics in one book.
This book contains the most crafted writing I have seen since since reading E.B. White. I guess mathematicians can write. I am not sure if this book is a humor book, philosophy book, or a collection of satires, but whatever the genre it should be read by educated readers everywhere.
Marine Fish and Invert Reef Aquarium: Advanced Techniques and Instrumentation

Albert J. Thiel

great book
As a former retailer of marine fish and invertebrates for two decades, I always recommended Thiel's books to those who were serious about expanding their knowledge beyond the flood of mere hobbiest level books. You can't go wrong with a book by Thiel.
