Museums 101
This is a text book on museum science. It covers all phases of designing, building, financing and operating a museum from the very basics. I have used it extensively to develop policies and procedures for the Minnesota Transportation Museum as we grow from a trolley ride to a major museum site. Everyone in the museum/history center/science center business should read this and see that other ...
Exhibit Labels: An Interpretive Approach
1 review
Beverly Serrell
AltaMira Press, 1996
I use it all the time
Even though the information in this book is almost nine years old, it is still relevant and useful. People tell me so, and I find myself going back to see what I said when I get questions about label length, typesize, levels of information, or how long it takes to write. Do not buy the other book listed here, Making Museum Labels, because it is out of date (and out of print), and all the good ...

To The Point Skills Teaching
This text provides an excellent overview of the processes and considerations in good ethnographic research. Chapter 1 provides a discussion that introduces the reader to the term ethnography. Those who assume that they already know about ethnography may also want to peruse this chapter for a refreshing and concise review of rationale and terminology. The next chapter describes processes for ...

Now in a newly updated and expanded fourth edition, "Research Methods In Anthropology: Qualitative And Quantitative Approaches" by H. Museums in Motion: An Introduction to the History and Functions of Museums (American Association for State ...
Mary Alexander
AltaMira Press, 2007
In 1979, Edward P. Alexander's Museums in Motion was hailed as a much-needed addition to the museum literature. In combining the history of museums since the eighteenth century with a detailed examination of the function of museums and museum workers in modern society, it served as an essential resource for those seeking to enter to the museum profession and for established professionals looking for an expanded understanding of their own ...

Early American Decorative Arts, 1620-1860: A Handbook for Interpreters.
Early American Decorative Arts, 1620-1860: A Handbook for Interpreters. Author: Pauline K. Eversmann. 320 pages. Revised edition, 2000. This book was recommended to me by a fellow guide at Waynesborough. Wow!!! Rarely to you read a book which is as broad in its approach, as deep in its information and yet so eminently readable. This book answered questions and made me ask even more. It ...
Visions of Culture: An Introduction to Anthropological Theories and Theorists

Jerry D. Moore
AltaMira Press, 2008
Any Anthropology student should have...
"Visions of Culture" is an essential book for any student of anthropology. It would be wrong to consider this book a textbook though. It is more of a reference on specific theorists. What Moore does is to write concise, informative chapters on each of the major anthropological theorists. He begins with biographical data, and goes on to discuss their theories. It is an indispensible reference ...
Reinventing the Museum, Historical and Contemporary Perspectives on the Paradigm Shift

Reinventing the Museum
I need this book for a graduate course, and it's much more readable and interesting than a lot of the other material I'm reading. Insightful, with short chapters that are accessible and interesting.
The Tapestry of Culture: An Introduction to Cultural Anthropology

AltaMira Press, 2009
The most exciting thing about anthropology is that it enables the student to become acquainted with people of different cultures. The Tapestry of Culture provides the student with the basic concepts necessary to understand these different cultures while showing that cultural variations occur within certain limits. Though the forces of globalization have caused cultures of the world around us to become increasingly similar, the book shows that ...

Planning Successful Museum Building Projects
This is about the most comprehensive book on planning a successful Museum from the onset of the ideas and gathering information. Would have liked to see actual business plans that were submitted and show the actual completed Museum as a end result.
Cultural Resource Laws and Practice (Heritage Resources Management)
1 review
Thomas F. King
AltaMira Press, 2008
A great addition to the CRM practitioner's bookshelf
Tom King's practical, down-to-earth compendium of advice on historic preservation and cultural resources law (as well as management -- not necessarily the same thing) should be a must-have for anyone in the cultural resources management biz or regulatory arena. Keep up the great work, Tom!
Why Would Anyone Believe in God? (Cognitive Science of Religion Series)
7 reviews
Justin L. Barrett
AltaMira Press, 2004
Why indeed?
This is a truly excellent introduction to the cognitive study of religion. Justin Barrett has an amazing gift for communicating difficult ideas and concepts in very simple language. Indeed, as an educational reference it should become a classic in the field, but it is full of seminal and important ideas in its own right. It will surely challenge anyone's preconceptions about how religious beliefs ...

AltaMira Press, 2008
A fascinating resource
This book, reports on research from many countries concerning the use of mobile technologies (cell phones, digital cameras, MP3 players, PDAs, and much more) for visitor interaction and learning in museums and historic sites. It's absolutely fascinating to read about the creative strategies these research projects have explored. This is the future!

Get this book!!
I am president of a small museum, just getting started. This book has become our 'bible.' It answers questions we didn't know we had. Everything is written so us newbies can understand it. I would recommend this to anyone involved in museum work. I mentioned it to our state curator and he said they referred to it often also.
Introduction to Cultural Ecology

Introduction to Cultural Ecology = Dull!
This book is very dull. Not a fun read in the slightest. I had to chug through it for a college class. Don't go out of your way to read it unless you have no other choice.

Carolyn Ellis
AltaMira Press, 2004
"I" recommend this book completely.
This is a fascinating read -- methodological theory presented in the form of a novel, a college prof teaching a class on a fairly new, "post-postmodern" form of reflexive qualitative writing, auto/ethnography. Could be seen as the manifesto for the sub-genre. Auto/ethnography is not embraced by all in the social sciences, such as anthropology, sociology, communications, psychology, medical ...
