What a wonderful resource for any teacher or librarian. I got the book to use for library school, but it has already helped me out so much in my classroom.
Library's Legal Answer Book
3 reviews
Mary Minow
American Library Association, 2003
Clear, concise, essential
Minow and Lipinski have crafted a guide for librarians who need guidance in what might seem to be a hopeless quagmire of potential legal entangelements. Its organization is clear, and an excellent index provides good access to its contents. Most important, perhaps, is the clear and unintimidating style of the writing. Some sections transcend the "library" in the title, and would be useful ...

"The author suggests ways that librarians and educators can attract preadolescent boys to library programs that are built on the unique developmental needs and interests of boys in the 'tween years. The goal of these programs is to create and maintain in this age group an interest in books and reading that will last a lifetime." (summary by South TX Library System) This fills a need for ...

Lessons that take you deeper into the books you share with kids
I have been using this book a lot this year (2007-2008) and it has inspired me quite a bit. What particularly has inspired me is the strong case Judi makes for linking the library to literacy. It perhaps is a simple message in the introduction, but one that has guided me this year and given me a steady and sturdy focus. The best part of these lessons is that they dive deep into books, and the ...

Handy Internet Reference Tool for Libraries...or anyone!
As reference librarian at the North Dade branch of the Miami-Dade system, I have found this superior and more up to date than the mass produced guides found everywhere these days including the supermarket. Our two week old copy is already thumbworn as we keep it by our copies of the terminals for patron reference. I think we may order another one and hide for staff use only! Good job Ms. ...
Exploring phenomenology: A guide to the field and its literature

David Stewart
American Library Association, 1974
great intro and summary
This is the best text out there for an introduction to Husserl, Heidegger, and the various strands of phenomenology through the first half of the 20th century. Very readable with excellent bibliographies (at least until 1990). Highly recommended for college and graduate students, or anyone interested in continental philosophy.

After reading through this book, I found that it was as complete a guide to Science Fiction as any previously read. The book is well laid out and the subject matter is complete and accurate. This manual is a "Must Have" for any Science Fiction buff, or any organization that needs to answer questions regarding the various subjects within the Science Fiction world. The various subsections ...

A Must Have For Every Librarian's Resource Shelf
I have been homeschooling for more 13 years. The library is my primary source of educational materials. In fact, according to the National Center for Education, this is true for 78% of homeschooling families. Ms. Furness' book, Helping Homeschoolers in the Library, should be on every public library's resource shelf. The book is broken into two parts. First: Defining Homeschoolers. This ...

An amazing collection of library information
This book contains a wealth of information on libraries and librarianship! It is an amazing resource for the librarian, containing information on everything from staff development to useful addresses to discussions on library issues. It is especially helpful to the student in a Library Science program; it is answering questions I didn't even know I had! A helpful (and fun) read.

Outstanding Reference Work
This book is an excellent guide to establishing homework programs in public libraries; very direct, quite easy to follow and interesting enough to hold the attention of the most jaded library board member. An excellent collection of material around which to center a funding campaign. Half your work has already been done for you by the author.

Irrepressible Reformer: A Biography of Melvil Dewey

Wayne A. Wiegand
American Library Association, 1996
Well researched book on Melvil Dewey
The author, Wayne Wiegand, has written the definitive book on Melvil Dewey. He tells us how Dewey accomplished so much in his lifetime. We also learn of some of the less than admirable qualities of Dewey. I found the following parts fascinating: the rise and fall of the Lake Placid Club; his difficult time at Columbia College; riding his bicycle to work on a regular basis; his ownership of ...

librarians! Storytellers! Study this book!
Wow! what a meticulous, thorough job Faurot has done in putting together this book of patterns, props and scripts for the person needing to engage an audience. This is real-life, been-in-the-trenches advice. Some of the patterns are exquisite -- see especially the chapter on a flannel board version of Fish is Fish. Don't try to digest the whole book at once. Read the introduction and the ...
