Don't buy it for information on roads and highways
This is a book review that is not useful for obtaining information about roads and highways. There is one main paragraph of information on roads and highways (road width, paving, bridges etc.); the rest is a description of the sources he used, the methodology, what he incorporated in his study, etc. The lingo of the reviews conclusion solidified my decision not to buy it. Here's a snippet: "In ...

Shaye Cohen Reviews Jacob Neusner's Review of Morton Smith
There are three academic personalities involved here. Morton Smith, now dead, was the teacher of both Jacob Neusner and Shaye Cohen. In this review of Neusner's book-length destruction of Morton Smith, Shaye Cohen provides the history of Neusner's relationship with Smith; and in a footnote, the history of his own more favorable relationship with Smith. I am agnostic about Smith; several articles ...

A review of a book review
In his review, Prof. Miller covers the main points of the text, noting positive highlights and the contribution the work makes to the study of the Korean language. At the same time, he points out what he sees as a number of shortcomings or errors, especially in editing. According to Prof. Miller, one of the main strengths of the book is that it reflects an increased understanding of the ...

Jews Cannot Be Objective in Old Testament Scholarship
It's impossible for Jews to be objective in Old Testament scholarship because they see everything from a pro-Jewish angle. How can you trust anything that Marvin Sweeney writes about? He's a Jew who is trying to Judaize a Christian seminary (Claremont School of Theology). He is known for saying "Shabbat Shalom!" at every Friday in his Claremont School of Theology course. That's a Jewish ...

scholarly treatise on grammatonomic (not graphic) evolution
A fascinating scholarly treatise on the theory behind title subject, with a grammatonomic approach, emphasizing the internal, or linguistic processes, rather than the external, or material aspect (graphic structures). Explains the motivations for and problems resulting from the borrowing of characters for other, spoken words, in a four-step model of the development of writing systems, from 1) ...

Excellent study of 'Abbasid jihadist ideology
Concentrating predominantly on the yearly summer raids on the Byzantine 'thughour' border areas, this work traces the emergence of the primacy of the warrior ethic of religious jihadist asceticism over the more archaic tribal and imperial idioms that had previously propelled islamic expansion. In so doing, the work conjectures as to what effect this incipent individuallist, piety-minded ...

Roland Grubb Kent

A Cornerstone of Old Persian linguistics
Professor Kent's monumental book is still the most widely used work on old Persian. Although it is old (about fifty years old), it provides us with a complete overview of the inscriptions and their transliteration and transcriptions. In many cases, like the style of teaching the grammer, the need for a newer book is felt, something in the league of Nyberg's A Manual of Pahlavi. Still, a great ...

A Hilarious Book
"Byzantine and Early Islamic Near East : Land Use and Settlement Patterns (Studies in Late Antiquity and Early Islam, Vol 1" has GOT to be the funniest book I've ever read. It's lovable characters (I loved Colonel McBern) and engaging story-line make this comedy a MUST READ!
