Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-IV-TR
This book is one textbook that will stay with me throughout my coursework. It is very helpful in understanding mental issues and how to decide proper diagnosis. It is well written and easy to navigate. I definitely recommend also getting DSM made easy with this book as the case examples really are helpful.

Practical emphasis on empirical validation
I teach those evil, mean behavioral and cognitive courses that all of you hate. Bwaaahahahahaaaaah. Even so... Add me to the list of people who heartily endorse this new edition of a classic. I use it as a teaching tool and as a reference, and clinical psychology students generally rave about it. A book like this one is essential at a time when psychodynamic approaches are fighting for ...

Great Bathroom Book
This is a great book with real-life case vignettes illustrating presentations of most of the diagnoses in DSM-IV-TR. Though initially skeptical, given the contrived case names, the book is excellent. Each case is followed by a discussion of the DSM-IV diagnostic issues raised. An especially neat part of the book is a presentation of historic cases from Blueler, Freud, and others, as well as ...
Long-Term Psychodynamic Psychotherapy: A Basic Text (Core Competencies in Psychotherapy)

Glen O. Gabbard

Wonderful Read and Tool
As a graduate student in a predominately psychodynamic program, I have been assigned a myriad of psychodynamic/analytic literature, and this book, by far, is the most incisive, jargon free, and useful tool I have found for understanding dynamic theory-all its important nuances- and perhaps, even more importantly, for applying it to patients. Gabbard also elucidates many ancillary topics, such as ...

Dr. Othmer is a remarkable teacher
This book (and its companion "The Difficult Patient") are highly readable and very rewarding. As a practicing psychiatrist using it to prepare for the oral boards, I can tell you that I learned many things -- both practical tips and theoretical insights. I had originally thought these two books were "filler" by the APP to capitalize on the release of DSM-IV, but boy was I wrong! It is an ...

Treatment Companion to the Dsm-IV-TR Casebook

Treatment Companion to the DSM IV TR
This book has good case examples that help you get more familiar with the DSM IV TR. The only regret I have is that I wish I also bought the book that is meant to go with it. Even on it's own, it tells complete case examples and ideas of how to treat the client so it works independently too.

Invaluable resource in learning the DSM-IV-TR
I bought this book as a study aid to assist me in preparing for my counseling licensure exam. I own the DSM-IV-TR but found that it was difficult for me to learn with it because it was so technical. The study guide breaks the diagnoses down into simpler descriptions, gives case examples of clients with the various disorders, and provides study questions to help you evaluate your progress in ...

Very good learning tool!
I am a 2nd year psychiatry resident, and in that developmental period when differential diagnosis starts to become a real tool in your armamentarium. The book is informative and concise. The introductions to, and discussions of the various psychiatric symptoms are very informative and helpful. They are like having an experienced psychiatrist as your personal tutor. It leaves you wishing the ...
Dire Mastery: Discipleship from Freud to Lacan

Francois Roustang

Freud: the long and looming shadow of the Founder
Roustang writes a fascinating account of the birth of the Psychoanalytic Movement and Freud's attempts to both grow and control the movement he founded. Freud had created something new, something that had the potential to free people up. To spread his discovery, he felt he needed disciples - people who would take Psychoanalytic theory beyond where he could take it himself. The kind of people he ...
Clinical Study Guide for the Oral Boards in Psychiatry

Nathan R. Strahl
American Psychiatric Publishing, Inc., 2008
The book you can rely on to pass the boards.
If you want to read just one book, read this one to beat the Oral boards. (Although it is too detailed for Part-II, and therefore excellent for Part I as well). For Part II don't focus on small details, rather pick up the clinical and practical points.
