An Excellent Basic Text
I am an advanced amature who holds a degree in photography and I was looking for a book to use as a basic text for an introduction to photography class that I wanted to teach. I looked at several dozen and I settled on The Betterphoto Guide to Digital Photography. This is an easy to read, reasonably organized book with exemplar photographs to assist in illustrating the author's topics. For my ...

The BetterPhoto Guide to Digital Nature Photography (Better Photo Guide to)21 reviews
Jim Miotke

Amphoto Books, 2006

One of the better photo guides to nature!
Nature's a big place, and you can easily get lost -- photographically. This book does a good job of explaining all the varied aspects of outdoors and wildlife photography from a digital perspective. You'll learn how to choose lenses, stalk elusive creatures, and capture great "close-ups" from distance perspectives. I liked this book very much.

The only book on this you will ever need!
I've been wanting both of her books for awhile now and I finally splurged and got both of them (the Polaroid Manipulations book that concentrates on the SX-70 manip process). When I first flipped through this book I was blown away and amazed by the content. This book is the number one resource for helping you along with your Polaroid transfers and emulsion lifts. It is HIGHLY informative. The ...

Capture Your Kids in Pictures: Simple Techniques for Taking Great Family Photos with Any Camera6 reviews
Jay Forman

Amphoto Books, 2004

Surprisingly Helpful Book
A friend loaned this book to me with the recommendation "There are some decent tips in here." I initially put the book away, thinking that my two high school photography classes had been enough instruction for something as simple as taking snapshots of my daughter. Turns out I was wrong. The book is filled with practical advice. And more importantly, each tip is illustrated with ...

The best I've seen so far
I first looked at this book in the library and then later put it on hold for the next available copy and it's going to take months before I get to read it again since there is such a long waiting list for the book. I think it is the best book I've seen so far on Marketing and Promotion for Photographers. Elysee Wiesberg what a gem you are for passing on this invaluable information! I can't wait to try some of Carr's Ideas

The Photographer's Toning Book: The Definitive Guide8 reviews
Tim Rudman

Amphoto Books, 2003

Superb technical reference
This book provides in depth detail into the toning process without getting too deep into the scientific chemical reactions. It covers many, many types of toning, provides many examples of results, and is very well written. The author covers techniques old and new and provides a number of different formulas in the formulary section at the end of the book for those who are interested in using ...

The Business of Wedding Photography (Business of Photography)4 reviews
Ann Monteith

Amphoto Books, 1996

Finally, a non-biased book about the biz side of wed photos!
At first I thought this book would be another "this is how I did it, just copy me" publication that is so common in the photography industry. In contrast, though, Monteith has taken a fresh approach by describing the various options available for all your business decisions. It covers all the major ideas used by photographers today (both full-time and part-time), and lets you decide how ...

Creative Elements: Darkroom Techniques for Landscape Photography5 reviews
Eddie Ephraums

Amphoto Books, 1995

Excellent practicum on the art of imaging and developing
This is an excellent source of creative insight. I found this book helped me see more creative posibilities. I have tried many of the techniques, especially toning, outlined in this book and found the results very gratifying. In fact, by using the processing technique outlined in this book one of my images won a juried competition. This isn't a book for a beginner in the darkroom, but if you ...

Novices receive a guide which encourages them to experiment
There are plenty of how-to guides on digital photography on the market, but libraries seeing a solid general reference should take a look at this: it provides a step-by-step course in common digital camera controls and photography and presents learn-as-you-go projects to help readers learn to work with a camera. The Art and Craft of Keepsake Photography: Engagements & Weddings: How to Take Perfect Photos and Make ...3 reviews
Barbara Smith

Amphoto Books, 2006

A MUST HAVE book for professional photographers!
I am a professional photographer and a paper crafter and I was already offering custom handmade invitations and announcements. Even with my experience, this was the most informative book on this subject I have ever read. I'm actually buying a second copy of this book so I can keep one intact and cut up the second book to use in my "Visual Journal" (She talks about this in the book) My only ...

Forms in Modernism: The Unity of Typography, Architecture and the Design Arts 1920s-1970s2 reviews
Virginia Smith

Amphoto Books, 2005

An Absolutely Stunning Book
I was attracted first to the cover, which is exceptionally stylish and elegant. Then I was intrigued by the subtitle, The Unity of Typography, Architecture, & the Design Arts. This seemed to me to imply that the book would be of interest, not only to specialists in each of those fields, but to anyone interested in the aesthetics of one's surroundings. The content lived up to expectations, ...

Elements of Black and White Photography: The Making of Twenty Images4 reviews
George Todd

Amphoto Books, 2001

Something for Everyone
I got this book at the same time as I got Barry Thornton's Edge of Darkness. I found they were complementary is many ways. George Todd has been at this craft of making monochrome pictures for several decades, and his skill and picture and printmaking ability shine through. Mr Todd has got the picturemaker's trinity of 'tone, detail and texture' pretty much down pat, and the book gives us fine ...

Adventure Travel Photography2 reviews
Nevada Weir

Amphoto Books, 1993

Fantastic Book for the Travel Photographer
Nevada is a fantastic adventure travel and people photographer who has a keen insight into how to make great images. This is the best travel photography book on the market! Period! Lots of information and advice on how to pack, what to pack, how to deal with the locals and gain their confidence, etc. The only caution I would give is that Nevada's film advice (specific type/brand name, etc) may ...

Using Your Camera, A Basic Guide to 35mm Photography Revised and Enlarged Edition4 reviews
George Schaub

Amphoto Books, 2001

Excellent, concise, & visual beginners guide
I consider myself an advanced beginner, and own several books on photography. This, however, is the one I turn to time and again for explanations and techniques. It is concise but more than adequate for a good working knowledge of modern camera functions, composition, exposure, exposure compensation, etc. With help for special circumstances such as existing light, night exposures, pushing ...
