Pronunciation and Reading of Ancient Greek (The Living Voice of Greek and Latin) (The Living Voice of Greek ...3 reviews
Stephen G. Daitz

Audio Forum, 2003

there's nothing else like it
If you're new to this field, it might surprise you to know that the pronunciation of ancient Greek is a controversial subject. Ever since the study of Greek was reintroduced to Europe after the fall of Constantinople, people have been debating the best way to pronounce it. Since we don't have any recordings of ancient Greeks speaking, linguists have to reconstruct what they think the ancient ...

Arabic You Need (Lebanese), CDs & text1 review
Hadia Harb

Audio-Forum, 2006

Necessary for learning Lebanese dialect, but not on it's own.
This book and cd are necessary for learning the Lebanese dialect of Arabic. You will, however, need Pimsleur's "Eastern Arabic I" to learn the language. "Arabic You Need" is not adequate to really learn to speak Levantine Arabic. Pimsleur gives you the important stuff and their teaching method is excellent. The problem is that it is the Syrian dialect which is different from the Lebanese dialect. ...

Ascent of Man31 reviews
Jacob Bronowski

Audio Forum, 2006

Inspired many copiers but is still the best...
Previous reviews don't do Bronowski justice. He began as a mathematician; but after being sent to Hiroshima, as part of a team studying the aftereffects of the nuclear blast, he switched to biology. He was warm and articulate. A poet himself, he was one of the few people who truly understood the English poet William Blake, although (unlike most of his writing) his essays about Blake could use ...

Basic Course in Haitian Creole1 review
Albert Valdman

Audio-Forum, 1992

Most Comprehensive Kreyol
I purchased the set of books and tapes in 1997. The book originally was published in the 70's (Duvalier years), so some of the material is dated (how to send a cable, find a telephone, etc.). However, the cassettes provide almost 24 hours of audio. With repetition of audio, and doing the written exercises, I was able to command a large chunk of the language. The spelling, however, is in the ...

Georgian: A Reading Grammar (audio CDs & text)4 reviews
Howard I. Aronson

Audio-Forum, 1989

Great Resource
I agree that it is a "slow read." But I think it is well worth it. When you work your way through the exercises at the end of each chapter you will be amazed how much you have learned. The really terrific thing is there are answer keys to all exercises as well. It is rare to find answer keys these days so that really adds to the value of the book for a self-starter.

The Conscience of a Conservative - Goldwater Speech37 reviews
Barry Goldwater

Audio-Forum, 2005

Manifesto of the Modern-Day Conservative Movement
Barry Goldwater's "The Conscience of a Conservative" was one of the seminal manifestos of the modern-day conservative movement, defining conservative positions in both economic policy and foreign policy. It was published in 1960, when, just as today, many conservatives seemed ashamed to identify themselves as such. Reading this book will give conservatives a sense their movement's roots and ...

Khmer Basic Course (Khmer Cambodian Basic Course)1 review
Richard B. Noss, Someth Suos, ...

Audio-Forum, 1970

Good but flawed language course
I have used this book to brush up on Khmer and improve my vocabulary. Overall a good teaching tool, but some of the translations between Khmer and English are flawed, or just plain wrong. Some of the pronounciations suggested on the accompanying tapes are at variance with native language pronunciation. I work in an agency where the majority of the staff are native Khmer speakers, from ...

Swedish: A New Basic Course (Foreign Service Institute Language Series)3 reviews
Foreign Service Institute

Audio-Forum, 1982

Truly Spoken Swedish
This book is targeting the conversational skills and listening comprehension using 8 cassettes as stated in the book. If you go for the new SFI course with 15 CDs I believe it will be the same material as in this book. I have only purchased the book, which gives excellent account of everyday Swedish, presented in a dialog covering a large variety of situations. The book has 16 units: Getting ...
