The Scarlet Letter (Bantam Classics)

Nathaniel Hawthorne
Bantam Classics, 1981
Of Sin and Secrets
Is "The Scarlet Letter" worthy of being considered a classic? Why do some love it and some hate it? These are questions that played through my mind when I picked up this book. I'm a fan of some of Hawthorne's short stories--"Ethan Brand," "The Bosom Serpent," "Young Goodman Brown," among others--but I found his novel, "The House of the Seven Gables," long and plodding. Boy, was I in for a ...

Edith Wharton
Bantam Classics, 1987
Short, sweet, but not so to the point
I believe that this book could be classified as one of those stories that you are glad you took the time to read after you finish it, but getting to that final stage of completion is more of a task than it may seem. Surprisingly, this is one of the few short stories (90 some pages) that I have ever read, that seemed to droan on for a good half of the time. Never the less, there were some ...

Mary Shelley
Bantam Classics, 1984
A vivid, wicked, and timeless classic
Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is one of most influential books of its time that has become a part of every child's life. Although often misinterpreted due to numerous adaptations and spoofs of the original monster, this groundbreaking gothic novel is still relevant today for its vivid portrayal of human emotions and weighty struggle between moral and dissolute views on human relationships. ...

Henry James
Bantam Classics, 1981
Five Excellent Tales from a Master Craftsman
The Turn of the Screw and Washington Square are novellas. Daisy Miller is intermediate in length while The Beast in the Jungle and The Jolly Corner are short stories. All five are among the best short fiction of Henry James. In the introduction Professor R. W. B. Lewis only marginally discusses the literary merit and artistry of these five stories; he is more concerned with developing ...

Deceptive!
I own these as soft covers, and ALL the stories and novels are in the 2 volume collection. However, when I received this kindle edition, the table of contents did not include all of the stories and did not have all of the novels. I really wanted to read Hound of the Baskervilles, but it just wasn't in the table of contents! How could they sell this AND NOT have everything listed?! How can I ...

Hear the Sirens sing.
When I was a younger lad, I bought Richard Lattimore's translation, which is a grandiose bore. Then I had the good fortune to read Mandelbaum's Aeneid, which shines. This brought me to Mandelbaum's Odyssey. And it is the ideal Odyssey for scholarship and pleasure: -The language is simple and strong. Mandelbaum knows his job--he tells the story simply and brings the ancient genius of Homer ...
The Bhagavad-Gita : Krishna's Counsel in Time of War (Bantam Classics)

Bantam Classics, 1986
Cross my Heart and Hope to Die
The Bhagavad-Gita is the blue pill. And like every earth-shattering book, is very short. Nevertheless, the little pocket book manages to be the central text of Indian philosophy and religion. It was revered by Gandhi, and Thoreau took it with him to Walden pond. Like the Iliad, or Hamlet, the story is about a young prince who doesn't know what to do, and so gives up for awhile. During ...

Dante Alighieri
Bantam Classics, 1982
Amazing Translation for the Novice
I paid an absolute fortune for this edition while studying in Perugia, Italy (apparently the dollar isn't doing so well these days, hence the price), but I would say it was worth it. My first time reading Dante (recreationally, to boot!), I was entraced by the beautiful language of the translation. In his story, Dante makes several obscure references to unknown historical figures of his age. ...

If you're looking for the 2nd Norton Edition, with new translation
I just want to alert readers: This page is for the Second Norton Critical Edition, which is a new translation. However, *all* of the comments and reviews below are for other translations and editions, and the "Look Inside" feature shows a completely different translation and edition. Just so you know. Amazon: Get with it, guys. I was wondering when you were going to get so big you could not ...

Excellent Short Stories
I was looking for an anthology for my class to read; this is the one I chose. There is an excellent cross section of authors and story types.
The Idiot (Bantam Classic)

Fyodor Dostoevsky
Bantam Classics, 1983
Dostoevsky overwhelms with his talent
I admit it upfront- Fyodor Dostoevsky's 'The Idiot' was a difficult read. Immediately following this I would like to add that it is not the author's fault that this is the case. Nor is it the translators place to be blamed (Constance Garnett does a wonderful job, as always- her translations from Russian are highly recommended; note: this review refers to Bantams first printing of this novel). ...

Charles Dickens
Bantam Classics, 1982
Best Novel by Dickens
Oliver Twist is the best novel by Dickens.Out of all the very enjoyable books by Dickens, I think Oliver Twist just has that certain wow factor that keeps the reader hooked from page one. This novel, along with The Christmas Carol, are great read alouds that both adults and children can enjoy.I've read this book at least a dozen times, but Oliver Twist seems to get better with time.
Ralph Waldo Emerson: Selected Essays, Lectures and Poems

Ralph Waldo Emerson
Bantam Classics, 1990
At long last: someone worth reading....
I discovered Emerson at age 34, and it was like coming home. I have always been, I guess, a natural "transcendentalist". In other words, I instinctively and intuitively fell into a transcendentalist mindset and way of thinking without ever having read any. So I've read Thoreau and Annie Dillard and frankly can't stand either of them. I find them a little strained. Emerson, to me at least, is ...

Greek Drama (Bantam Classics)

Moses Hadas
Bantam Classics, 1984
Good value, though outdated
Editor Moses Hadas was a world-renowned scholar, and his notes can be helpful, but the translations he presented in this volume have become outdated. Most Greek translations sacrifice something through the morality, prudence, or artistic judgment of the translator. This is a fine text for the value, but if clarity is more important to you, seek a more recent translation.
Persuasion

Bantam Classics, 2008
A second chance at love
In Jane Austen's time, young women were taught that it was practically their duty to "marry well" -- someone of at least equal social/financial standing. But if a woman turned down a suitor for being poor, she ran the risk of losing the man she loved. That's the problem for Anne Elliott, the heroine of Jane Austen's final novel "Persuasion" -- a delicate romance that takes place AFTER the ...
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Bantam Classics, 2004
"If he be Mr. Hyde," he had thought, "I shall be Mr. Seek."
Atty. Mr. Utterson is worried, as the keeper of Dr Henry Jekyll's will. The will gives everything to Edward Hyde incase of Henry's death or disappearance. Mr. Utterson met the hideous Hyde once and does not trust him. Well it looks like Henry's will will have to be executed as the housekeeper; Mr. Pool thinks Hyde hid Henry's body. Once again, I saw Spencer Tracy before I read the book, so I ...

What could have been?
Let me first state that I do not own this specific edition of Maggie, and that I am only reviewing the actual story of Maggie: A Girl of the Streets. I wasn't going to review this book since it is not the one that I own; however, after reading a previous review I decided that I had to review it. First, this book is pretty much about what everyone said it is about. It is about a family living ...
Around the World in Eighty Days

steam powered excellence
I can't believe that a 130+ year old book translated to English was good enough to keep me up half the night but this brilliant old gem did. The story features the height of late 1800 steam technology and a couple of heros who want to circumnavigate the earth in 80 days to win a bet. The characters are surprisingly likable and the action is just GREAT. Put this at the top of the queue for ...
