It's a Mitzvah!: Step-By-Step to Jewish Living

Bradley Shavit Artson

Just give it 5 stars already!!!
I can't stand it when reviewers quibble about minor points they don't like and then give 4 or 3 stars to a superb book like this one. Artson's book is organized beautifully. Furthermore, it's highly readable, intelligent, concrete, and thought-provoking. His book of Torah commentary (The Bedside Torah) is another wonderful book.

Milton Steinberg

Fantastic! If you are living in the modern world, this book is for you.
After finishing the book, I went to check some reviews only to find so many of them to be absurd and laughable. Some people expect this book to be 100% historically accurate when Steinberg notes that the book is purposefully inaccurate in some places. Reviewers criticize Steinberg for not fully answering the "question." This is obviously a ridiculous criticism because if the book teaches us but ...

The best popular history of Conservative Judaism
This book answers every question you wanted to know about how Conservative Judaism developed, what its theological and legal principles are, and how it differs from the other Jewish movements (Reform, Orthodox and Reconstructionist). More importantly, it starts off with a summary of how all how the Jewish movements we know today developed. Many readers will be surprised to learn that ...
The Wise Men of Helm and Their Merry Tales

Solomon Simon

Funny as can be
These 14 stories, published in Yiddish in 1942, and in English the same year, link us to a vanished world, reviving the Jewish folklore of the fools of Helm, a mythic town set deep in the forests of Poland. There Jews had long beards and black coats that reached their ankles--but were not quite like other Jews. In the spring after a very hard winter, they built a wall around their town to keep ...

Maimonides: A Guide for Today's Perplexed

Kenneth Seeskin
Behrman House Publishing, 1991
Best introductory guide to the writer
While I agree that this is a wonderful book, I find the previous reviews on this book incomprehensible. Maimonides's writings are not at all obvious, and Maimonides himself repeatedly claimed that his philosophical writings must never be taken at face value. Rather, Maimonides continues, he is fearful of how the ignorant will not be able to understand certain philosophical concepts, and he is ...
The Extraordinary Nature of Ordinary Things

Steven Z. Leder

A thought provoking, often funny look at life for all ages
My 9 year old grandson raised with little Judaism, and 70 year old Orthodox brother enjoyed these stories, which they read together, in equal measure. It provided thought provoking insights into the extraordinary nature of everyday life in stories short enough for children raised on TV segments, and seniors with little time and patience for labored phliosophy.

Great Resource for Hebrew School teachers and beginners
This book has lots of creative and fun reading activities to reinforce basic skills. I like it because the games and tasks were not ordinary, they were creative and they worked really well for my friend as a tool when he taught Hebrew to a diverse group of kids. A great resource from which to draw.
Church, State, and Jew in the Middle Ages

A valuable record of medieval official anti-Semitism
Robert Chazan has compiled a wonderful collection of documents which illustrate the attitudes held by the Roman Catholic Church and the secular authorities toward Jews during the Middle Ages. Most of them are legal codes, or attributable to the pens of bishops, popes, and kings. However, Chazan includes a few from the point of view of the Jews themselves, which makes this illustration of medieval ...

Capturing the Moon: Classic and Modern Jewish Tales
Edward Feinstein
Behrman House Publishing, 2008
It is through stories that we express our hopes and our fears. Stories convey to others what is in our hearts, what we feel is the essence of our life experiences. They transmit our culture, inform our values, and educate our children. Stories have been essential to Jewish life from the time of the Bible itself, and they continue to hold a special place in our hearts today. In this new collection of classic and modern folktales, Rabbi Edward M. ...
