The No-Nonsense Guide to Global Media (No Nonsense Guides)
Peter Steven

Between the Lines(CA), 2004

The power and influence of the mass media grows daily, crucially affecting the way all of us see and understand each other. The No-Nonsense Guide to Global Media introduces readers to the political economy of the major media - film, television, radio, recording, publishing, and the Internet. Peter Steven looks at the ever-greater concentration of ownership and at the convergence of technologies and media functions. At the same time, he ...

Race, Space, and the Law: Unmapping a White Settler Society

Between the Lines(CA), 2002

Racial categories can be spatial categories. The writers reject the idea that spaces, and the arrangement of bodies in them, emerge naturally over time. Do Native reservations, Chinatowns or slums simply emerge naturally? Or are they products of more active, often violent, resettlements? The authors ask * How did such places come to exist? * What is the future of the ideas that formed these places? * ...and readers are encouraged to unmap ...

My Journey With Jake : A Memoir of Parenting and Disability1 review
Miriam Edelson

Between the Lines(CA), 2000

a soul-making passage from heartbreak to hope
This is an essential book for parents of special children, and those who love and want to help them, but it is also one of the most moving personal stories I have ever read. It's said that "What doesn't break you makes you stronger," and Miriam Edelson's soul-making bravery is on every page of this book. It gave me courage, ideas, and inspiration, and I would recommend it to anyone on a ...

Booze: A Distilled History
Craig Heron

Between the Lines(CA), 2004

A history of drink and drinking in Canada, from the European conquest to the present. Enlivened by photographs, ads, and cartoons, and, by turns, charming and disturbing, Booze tells a story with many chapters: * liquor traffic * alcohol in Native Indian communities * prohibition * bootlegging * the advent of the wine bar * the era of the cocktail lounge "To write about booze is to enter into a minefield of ...

Wayne Ellwood

Between the Lines(CA), 2007

Concise, entertaining guide to complex issues
This is a great intro to corporate globalism, and also a good refresher for the more educated folk. Ellwood wonderfully and consicesly gives a quick history of globalization (ie economic colonialism)describes the Bretton Woods Trio, explains and the problems with the rise of speculative investments, among others. I would recommend this book to anyone.

User Error: Resisting Computer Culture1 review
Ellen Rose

Between the Lines(CA), 2003

Fascinating social insight, if awkwardly conveyed
This is an illuminating study of the social hierarchy of computer knowledge and how the lowest class, the "User," was constructed. The author puts forth that technological advancement has, instead of liberating the User, subjected him to greater bondage as he becomes a slave to technology and a pawn in informational politics. Why are Users compelled to pursue needless upgrades? Is there really ...

The No-Nonsense Guide to Indigenous Peoples2 reviews
Lotte Hughes

Between the Lines(CA), 2007

No-Nonsense
Overall a very informative book. Much evidence has been repeated many times in other publications. However, this book is good for people who do not know much about indigenous peoples. It needs to romanticize tribal communities a bit, but overall is well researched and documented. Good for beginning scholars

Poor-Bashing: The Politics of Exclusion
Jean Swanson

Between the Lines(CA), 2002

Exposes the ideology of poor-bashing. Not a survey of poverty, this is a popular analysis of the way poor people are depicted in the media. When reporters cover poverty stories, they use a special language of poor-bashing which * disguises the real causes of poverty * hurts and excludes poor people * cheapens the labor of people with jobs * takes the pressure off the rich to fight poverty She also reveals how government and corporate clients ...

Mostly it's a book about creating a queer life - whether it be family, couples, individuals, affairs, friends, or something else entirely. Great for glbt people to read about others who are making life work for them, and a great source of creative ideas to make things work better for ...

Mirrors of Stone: Fragments from the Porcupine Frontier
Charlie Angus

Between the Lines(CA), 2003

A popular history of the multi-ethnic mining cultures that thrived in North America from 1900-1950. The stormy history of Eastern European and Chinese immigrants in hardrock mining camps has never fit into the comfortable cliches of official history. Angus unearths the dark sides of this history--the wild tales of bootleggers, mobsters, and prostitution rings--and opens up a new perspective on our history and culture. Louis Palu's ...

Very Far North13 reviews
Timothy Murphy

Between the Lines(CA), 2002

Author's Caveat
I'm not reviewing my own book, just expressing my concern that the first five reviews of VFN below are authored by Leo Yankevitch, who slips in a rave of his own self-published book. Yankevitch has also posted pseudonymous negative reviews of Rhina Espaillat, Kate Benedict, Alicia Stallings, and many other fine formal poets. It is a despicable practice, and Amazon should find a way to screen ...
