Unlikely action hero
There's plenty of horseracing in this novel, but only as a background. No jockeys, owners or trainers hold center state. The hero, Charles Todd, is an artist - a painter of horses. Todd visits his cousin Don only to find himself at a crime scene. Don's house has been stripped of its valuable antiques. Even the wine cellar has been emptied - a small fortune in wine vanished. Don's wife, who ...

Great Book
I had bought this book several years ago after it was referenced in several other books I was reading. The last couple of copies were given away to people that seemed to need to read what this book illustrates. I went looking for it on my bookshelves a few months back, and remembered that I had given the last one away, so I had to order another one. After looking for it in commercial chain ...

The Best of Times
(Review of MP3 CD version) This unabridged reading of Charles Dickens's "A Tale of Two Cities" (1859) is outstanding. The two cities, of course, are Paris and London, and the drama of the story centers on the terror of the French Revolution in 1789-92 when the Guillotine was put to frequent use against those judged to be enemies of the new republic. The reader, Frederick Davidson, does an ...

Brilliant, Exquisite, Fantastic
I got this download from Audible.com and it is brilliantly read by James Lee. I was completely captivated and transported to the world of Edmund Dantes and 17th century France. I did consult spark notes every 5 or 10 chapters, because when listening to a book of this magnitude where aristocrats are changing their names (and sometimes needing aliases) and getting titles, it could be easy to get ...

Powerful Message
This allegory for mankind's thirst for power and domination is delivered with passion and emotion. I thought that the narrator did a great job at reading this classic novel by George Orwell. If you don't have time to sit and read this book, then in one afternoon you can revisit the book on audiobook. Recommended!

Outstanding
I must admit that when I first began listening to this audiobook I did not care for the narrator's voice. After I made it to the second disk I began to more fully realize what a talented voice actor he actually was, and the remaining 28 disks or so were a great joy. His narration is delivered in a clear and warm manner and each character is given an unique voice and inflection. I will never be ...

Ralph Cosham C. S Lewis

Be vigilant and learn the ways of illusion
C S Lewis is brilliant in his interpretation of the "evil one". Beware and be on the lookout for the demonic. Obsessions, compulsions, self-righteousness are all tricks of the trade. But more subtle forms of illusion are; spritual pride that creeps us when you least expect it. One needs to be on the "alert". Other books for your consideration: People of the Lie: The Hope for Healing ...

Brilliant, easy to understand, a must-read.
"A Little History of the World" is a wonderful book. The whole book is presented as a "story", all the historical events are mostly linked together and in a sequence. Also, this book introduces a wide range of historical events and stories, from Jesus Christ to Mecca, and from Constantinople to the Qin Dynasty in China. But because this book was written in 1936, the WWII was not described, ...

Fahrenheit 451
Fahrenheit 451 At the tender age of 9, as my 30 year old father lay in a hospital dying of cancer, my grieving young mother packed me off to a theater nearby. The feature was Fahrenheit 451, the year was 1966, and I was amazed by the message in this movie, enough to go back every night for a week, and beg my mom for the book. Growing up, I often reflected on how I lost I would be without books, ...

Audio Pleasure
We all know that C.S.Lewis wrote the incredible Mere Christianity as a follow-on to his radio talks during the War, but what an unexpected pleasure to listen to his thoughts by these two articulate narrators on this CD set (M.C. plus Abolition of Man). Great job!

Awesome book
I love non-fiction. The author has a great story to tell and the guy reading it brings a lot of attitude! Excellent x 100. My only concern is that disk 7 didn't play. I had to rip it then burn it, which only produced really staticy tracks.
Treasure Island
Robert Louis Stevenson
Blackstone Audiobooks, 2005
Treasure Island is a story of good and evil. From the moment narrator Jim Hawkins meets the blind pirate Pew until the battle for hidden treasure on a tropical island, the novel evokes unforgettable scenes and characters and "a vision," said G. K. Chesterton, "of green palm trees and sapphire seas."

a classic for the best reasons
A masterful actor brings these seemingly innocent stories to life. The stories have many profound lessons for preschool age and young children and they neither hammer the lessons over the head nor speed by them too quickly to be grasped. Most importantly, the stories are so lovingly crafted by Milne and performed by Dennis that adults AND children can enjoy listening to them again (and again, ...

Very Well Read
First off, I wouldn't pretend to be a scholar of classic literature. This review is written by a regular working guy with a good job that allows me to listen to audiobooks. Having listened to this reading of War and Peace I gladly feel obliged to leave comment. Narrator Frederick Davidson is a pleasure to listen to as he gives life to all the various characters both male and female. This was ...

Simon Vance gets it!
My parents had been trying to get me to read this series for a number of years. I tried once or twice, but whether it was the wrong time or I was in the wrong mood, I just couldn't get into the characters. I then was in a position of driving, alone, from New York to Texas, and stopped in a bookstore for something to listen to on the way. First, the Master and Commander that I listened to ...

Amazing if you're new to Austen
This is amazing and perfect for anyone just being introduced to Austen. As some others have already said, it should specified clearly that this is a different version than the original but for what it is it is amazing.

Deep Survival is a great book
This book is, believe it or not, a page turner if you are interested at all in human behavior under the strain of a survival situation--why we do the things we do that get us killed or help us survive. I wasn't a quarter of the way through the book before I ordered Mr. Gonzales' second book. Buy this book--you will not be disappointed.

Excellent book!
Excellent book filled with insights and wisdom. It gives more depth to understanding India and Afghanistan which is discussed in the context of when Russia occupied it. The words flowed poetically throughout the book. I usually am a speed reader but this one I read every word.

Dracula
As an Author myself (The Q-ube ) which has a moderate amount of intrigue and games, its wonderful to read Bram Stoker's Dracula. As it is so complex, its also the first book that presents the unsuspecting world with the creepy and scary concept of a blood-sucking creature. Never could Bram Stoker have imagined the impact his book would have made. Its still the best horror book on vampires ever ...
