Love Songs of Sappho

Greatest lyric poet of Greece
Sappho was the greatest lyric poet of Greece, and any modern reader of her poetry can easily see why. Although she admittedly suffers in translation, one must learn to ignore the frustration caused by the occasional awkward translation. One must also try to ignore the fragmentary nature of her poems. There was once a definitive edition which consisted of nine books, but it was burned in hte ...

5 Stars or more!
I recommend this book for any Latin 3, or Ap Class! The vocabulary fold out in the back is very useful! Although some may argue Barbara Boyd's Book 10 and 12 Pallas and Turnus book is exactly the same, the vocabulary lists are scarce. Pharr also has vocabulary on the pages you are translating, that do not occur as often. He also has interesting points that refer to the latin in interpretation, ...

A powerful, contemporary re-presentation of war's effects
Having seen a staged production of this text at the Shakespeare Theater in Washington, DC, I am looking forward to reading the text in detail. In the theater, this was a powerful, painful confrontation of the effects of war on the victims -- the women and children. No heroes, no vainglorious praise of war. Just the horrors of surviving and loss. Troy becomes every war-devastated landscape. ...

Reading The Door in The Wall
Reading "The Door in the Wall" was a wonderful experience. Ms. Jaro's elegant prose transported me to ancient Rome. The characters came to life vividly, and I've never felt so connected to a main character in historical fiction. The book is beautifully researched; throughout it reads as a personal document by the main character, Marcus Caelius Rufus. My interest never flagged, and I'm on ...

I sing of arms and a man...
I used this book nearly 20 years ago in a class devoted to studying and translating the Aeneid; looking at the copyright page, I can see that the first copyright on the book was back in 1930. Clyde Pharr produced a far-reaching book, for it to remain in effective, useful life for such a long term. Reprinted now by the Bolchazy-Carducci Press (the press responsible for such fun books as 'Cat in ...

This book changed my life
I was raised in the Christian religion, but stopped attending church at age 13. In the last ten years, I've read lots of spirituality books--mainly Buddhist or Buddhist-inspired--by Pema Chodron, Caroline Myss, Thich Nhat Hanh, Natalie Goldberg, and others. I usually shy away from "Christian" books, but Seeding Your Soul is so much more than that, perhaps because the author is trained in Aikido ...

Gives exactly what it promises
Any teacher using Wheelock will instantly recognize the utility of a book that lets one know precisely what vocabulary a student has met up to a particular chapter. I like writing stories for my kids and this book helps me know exactly which words I need to gloss. Note to Mr. LaFleur and Mr. Tillery: A similar book on grammar points would be useful.

Force vs. altruism.
The Titan Prometheus has stolen fire from heaven and given it to Earth's mortal inhabitants. He is punished for his presumption by being bound to a rock on Mount Caucasus and tortured. Prometheus, who can foretell the future, refuses to tell Zeus the secret of Zeus' downfall. This is a play of the conflict between force and injustice on one side and intelligence, justice, and altruism on the ...

Solution to Student Woes
Having taken two AP Latin exams, I can attest to the difficulty of the first half of the exam, covering grammar and Reading Comprehension. Often, students do not get much grammar review after progressing to reading actual texts in 3rd year Latin. Thus, my classmates and I were faced with trying to recall rules and endings from two years ago. We could write essays on Catullus, Horace, and ...

excellent for students of latin!
These excerpts of the Confessions, as may not immediately be clear from the entry, stand as they were written--in Latin. It is an ideal book for practicing Latin. It contains a glossary in the back with all words used in the text. Also, it contains a fantastic introduction which seeks to equip the reader with all of the necessary syntactical developments that have occurred since the ...

Simia Duce
As a young Latin student who grew up on the pre-published version of these tales, I can highly recommend them. Pilosus and his tricks make perfect fodder for beginning Latin students of all ages, and references to works of classical literature help introduce the reader to a wider variety of ancient texts. As soon as I start teaching Latin, I will most definitely be using Pilosus as my guide!

I will like them in a school, I will like them like a fool, I will like them dressed in satin, Yes, I'll like them, even in Latin! I must confess, I do profess, I do so like Green Eggs and Ham! `Green Eggs and Ham' has been translated into many languages, just as other classic Dr. Seuss pieces have been so translated. So, why should it be unusual that `Green Eggs and Ham' would finally make it ...
Plato: Apology

The Purple Plato
The main body of this book is organized similarly Pharr's justly famous "Purple Vergil": each two page spread has 12-25 lines of Greek in the upper left, with the rest of the spread full of line-by-line notes covering difficult constructions, slang, vocabulary and context. This makes Plato wonderfully accessible with a minimum of flipping pages back and forth. The book's three appendices are (I) ...

An excellent critical summary of Vergil's "Aeneid" and its poetic art
Now in its second edition, The Art Of The Aeneid is Professor William S. Anderson's 138-page analytic introduction to Vergil's epic saga "Aeneid", and a "useful start on Rome's finest poem". Professor Anderson (Emeritus Professor of Latin at the University of California at Berkeley), has taught Latin previously at Yale and published informative works on Horace, Vergil, Roman comedy and satire, ...
