Still a favorite
I first read this book 46 years ago a the age of 13, and have reread it many times. For those of you who can read German, I would highly recommend the original version of the book, it is simply better. Miss Selinko was a very gifted writer and the translation does not do her justice. I am sure it can be purchased through Amazon.de

A-Viking You Should Go
English literature began with a Viking story, "Beowulf," but have you ever tried reading it? My own "Beowulf" experience led me to believe Viking literature is right down there with Viking cuisine in terms of digestibility. Imagine my surprise when I discovered a novel about Vikings, written over half a century ago, to be as thrilling, fantastic, and engaging as "The Long Ships." It's the ...

a really good book
This is such a good book. The story is engaging and fascinating. The characters were real people- complex and evolving. The book provided a glimpse of a world I will never experience except through reading. Reading it was a great pleasure.

A must have if you are a Corbett fan
If you love outdoors, hunting and conservation. This a must read. Corbett has the way with words, he can take you to the exact spots of each and every one of his hunts. The beautiful narration brings back to life the adventures and makes you feel as though you are walking right behind him all through it. This never gets old.. every time I read it, it feels just fresh. Excellent read!!!

"Three Cheers for Wildcat Island!"
Arthur Ransome's holiday series, beginning with "Swallows and Amazons" are essential reads, namely because of their literary importance as the first children's books to fall into the "holiday adventure" genre. But of course, they're so much more than that. Ransome's books are a valuable glimpse back into an age that no longer exists, in which children were trusted to use their imagination in ...

Wonderful Story with Lingering Magic
While exploring the woods near her home, a young girl, Lucy, encounters a small dog. She allows the friendly creature to lead her along a faded pathway, into a hidden cave and through a tunnel. When she emerges from the darkness, Lucy discovers an enchanted land and a young man named Michael who treats her to stories about the people and other beings who once lived there. One of my all time ...

GREAT Book!
I am halfway through this book, and like most of the books that I love, I want to know more, lots more, about this remarkable woman. The dialogue is very interesting and it's a rare glimpse into a culture that I know about, but don't truly know. Fascinating story. And, it's well written on top of it. Nary a typo, so far. I'm spellbound. Highly recommend!
The Great Escape

Paul Brickhill

Outstanding.
It's a shame the publisher decided to put a picture on the cover of Steve McQueen wrapped up in the barbed wire at the end of his big motorcycle escape attempt. Because, you see, that never happened in the TRUE story of the Great Escape contained in this book. The movie (while good) took serious dramatic license, while Brickhill's book presents the facts. And they are quite inspiring and ...

Speechless
Oh I am speechless. This is a book full of grace, character, This is the writers real life boyhood and apparently thought he could make a good book out of it. Boy was he right! I could read this book about three hundred times and then maybe think about putting it down! This man had such a life as a kid! man you would think it was fictional but when you know its not it makes you well... Speechless!

Better late than never
I bought Five Smooth Stones when it was first offered by a book club, probably Doubleday. I have carried it around while I moved from one teaching position to another in several states over decades. The return sticker on the white page has my maiden name. I was married in 1971. Now that I am retired I have time to read a 853 paged book. Although I DO read for pleasure, this is not an easy read. ...

It's my family
When my sister and I first read this book, we laughed uproariously, because the two grandmothers were exactly like our grandmothers. And today, my sister is both of those grandmas, having the given name of one and the nickname of the other. I've lent out this book to many people, and no one ever gives it back. I'm glad to see it again, because for a long time I could find it only in bookstores ...

Irving Stone

The Soul of An Artist
Irving Stone created a wondeful biography of Van Gogh, who is one of the definative "tortured" artists if for nothing more than his name is synonymous with the phrase to most people who are even casual fans of art. In this book Stone captures the emotions of Van Gogh and the highs and lows of his life. This sheds even more meaning on his works of art. I was fortunate enough to see a Van Gogh ...

truth and wisdom
The world we live in has little to do with what we see on the evening news. A wise person values truth above all else, and is willing to search for it. This book will reward those who seek the truth. The true acid test of a person's wisdom is that their theories not only explain the present reality, but are accurate in predicting future events as well. Written over 35 years ago, this book ...

Just love it
This is one of our family's favorite books. My children want me to read this to them all year long, and they never seem to get bored of it. It's especially great for Christmas, and I just LOVE the message. What a gem of a book.

Aleister Crowley

A Classic For Eternity About Healthful Living
It's not quite as much fun to write a review when it seems everyone is basically in agreement. Crowley was not as evil as folklore suggests, and he was a lot more intellectually accomplished than his detractors would care to admit. What struck me about this book were the resounding themes in the final chapters. (I don't think this is a suspense-driven book, so I don't see myself as ...

A must for animal lovers!
I first read Beautiful Joe as a youngster probably 40 years ago; it broke my heart to read of Joe's beginnings with Jenkins in the opening chapters of the book but as I went on and he was rescued I found I couldn't put it down. The Italian's tragic loss of his animals in a barn fire still brings tears to my eyes, and Malta the cat remains a favorite character simply because she's a cat :). I ...

I felt like I was there!
Dennis Smith grabs your attention from the very first word to the last. Report from Engine Co. 82 is a great book that not only shows you what life was like in 70s Brooklyn, but what life was like on a daily basis for the men of the FDNY. This book is an easy read and completely grabs your attention. So many times I felt like I was really there fighting those fires along side Dennis and the ...

Have you ever wondered what goes on in a monastery?
When I was young, like most Catholic girls then, I had favorite nuns. I loved them, at times more than my parents, because I knew that they had given themselves to serve the world, no questions asked. One could throw an eraser in a way that Roger Clemens would have envied, and she used it judiciously to enforce a discipline that this little rebel needed enormously. I couldn't imagine any other ...

As Good the Second Time Around
Whenever anyone asks what books are among my favorites, Dear and Glorius Physician is in my top 5; along with Atlas Shrugged, Conversations with God (Book 1), Emerson's Essays and Change you Thoughts, Change your Life. An ecclectic assortment...I read this book when I was in my late teens in the 1960's. I have re-read it in my 60's. I now realize, this book was an important part of my decision to ...

Close to my heart
As a little girl, I loved babies! I wanted one of my own so bad (little did I know what I would have been in for). I ended up coming across this book and fell in love with it. I felt so close to the two girls and wished so much that I was in their shoes. It about 2 sisters who are shipwrecked along with 4 babies. They ended up getting stranded on an island where they not only have to fend for ...
