The Terror and Other Stories: Vol. 3 of The Best Weird Tales of Arthur Machen (Call of Cthulhu Fiction)4 reviews
S. T. Joshi (Editor) Arthur Machen

Chaosium Inc., 2005

Third in Chaosium's series on Arthur Machen
When I first read THE TERROR & OTHER TALES, I was under the impression from ST Joshi's introduction that he thought Arthur Machen's remaining works (the ones printed in this volume) were of poor quality. I spent the rest of the book determined to prove him wrong. Although I like Joshi as an editor (much better than Robert Price and his higher-criticism hangups), I think that academics sometimes ...

Frontier Cthulhu: Ancient Horrors in the New World (Call of Cthulhu3 reviews

Chaosium, 2007

Ancient evil in a new land
Frontier Cthulhu is a rousing trade paperback of all new mythos stories from Chaosium, published in late 2007. I am so happy about this avalanche of new mythos fiction from Elder Signs Press, Chaosium, Mythos Books and Hippocampus in the US, and Rainfall Books in the UK. Every few months us fans have some new book to gloat over; on the horizon are a Nyarlathotep anthology from Elder Signs Press, ...

Malleus Monstrorum: Creatures, Gods, & Forbidden Knowledge: Roleplaying Game Guide (Call of Cthulhu ...3 reviews
Scott David Aniolowski

Chaosium, 2006

More monsters than you can shake a stick at
I play Call of Cthulhu by Chaosium and this resource book is great for Keepers to draw from. Enough monsters and Old ones for any investigation. BRP is easy to convert to D20 so those folks into that will have no problem throwing into a D20 scenario/campaign. The most notable thing outside the content is the art work. Seems to take old photos/Ads/Artwork and splice mythos flavor into it. I ...

The Three Impostors and Other Stories: Vol. 1 of the Best Weird Tales of Arthur Machen (Call of Cthulhu ...15 reviews
Arthur Machen

Chaosium Inc., 2007

Convinced to buy Vol. 2
As the title says, I found this collection so intriguing that I will be buying the next volume (The White People and other Tales). The only work that I had previously known by Arthur Machen was "The Great God Pan", which has shown up in so many anthologies that I am thoroughly sick of it, although it is a good read the first few times through. "The Inmost Light" was quite disturbing to me in ...

Basic Roleplaying: The Chaosium d100 system (Basic Roleplaying) (Basic Roleplaying)3 reviews
Jason Durall, Sam Johnson

Chaosium Inc., 2008

Collecting all the rules in one book!
If you are familiar with BRP you can skip the next four paragraphs as it covers the basic history and basic system description. The Basic Roleplaying system (BRP) has been around for quite a while (RuneQuest 1978) and is one of the most well known roleplaying systems still in print today. Unlike many RPGs, BRP has stayed true to its core mechanics over the years. Sure each new game that used ...

The White People and Other Stories: Vol. 2 of the Best Weird Tales of Arthur Machen (Call of Cthulhu Fiction)4 reviews
Arthur Machen

Chaosium Inc., 2003

Volume 2 of Arthur Machen's work
I was vary impressed by Chaosium's first collection of Machen's work, which was THE THREE IMPOSTERS AND OTHER STORIES. "The Three Imposters" was a narrative of interwoven tales describing a paranoid man's encounter with three people who are not who they seem. Each is an excellent story in its own right, but the whole is greater than the sum. Considering the success of the first volume, I ...

Call of Cthulhu: Horror Roleplaying in the Worlds of H. P. Lovecraft, 6th Edition19 reviews
Sandy Petersen; Lynn Willis

Chaosium, 2005

Excelent Game
I am a newbie in RPG games but I have to say that CoC is definitely one of my favorites. I am browsing thru the manual in my spare time (very lil) and I am definitely looking forward to run an adventure. The manual is well written, informative and quite complete. Sometimes its structure might be not perfect but it does the job and really provides anyhting you might need.

The Strange Cases of Rudolph Pearson: Horripilating Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos (Call of Cthulhu Fiction)1 review
William Jones

Chaosium, 2008

Horripilating indeed! More please, Mr. Jones.
The Strange Cases of Rudolph Pearson by William Jones is a trade paperback published by Chaosium. List price is $14.95; currently is not available directly from Amazon. Cover art is by Steven Gilberts, who gave us the covers of Frontier Cthulhu (my favorite of his works) and Arkham Tales (which I also liked better than this). A vile multi-tentacled thing with weirdly segmented legs is trying to ...

Tatters of the King: Hastur's Gaze Gains Brief Focus Upon the Earth (Call of Cthulhu Horror Roleplaying)2 reviews
Tim Wiseman

Chaosium Inc., 2006

Have You Seen the Yellow Sign?
I run a Living Arcanis campaign, which also contains Freeport. With a wealth of material at my disposal, I decided to pick up Tatters of the King (TOK) to see how I could fit it into my campaign. I should point out that this is a long playtest review that contains spoilers galore. To help clarify what I did differently in my campaign, I will use a PLAYTEST tag. Tatters of the King is a massive ...

The Keeper's Companion: Blasphemous Knowledge, Forbidden Secrets: A Core Book for Keepers, Vol. 1 (Call of ...3 reviews
Keith Herber, William Deitze

Chaosium, Inc., 2000

Purchased as a gift.
I got this as a gift for my son-in-law. I have no knowledge of the book itself other than the person for whom it was purchased seems to like it very much. For me it served its purpose very well.

H.P. Lovecraft's Arkham: Unv the Legend-Haunted City (Call of Cthulhu Horror Roleplaying, Chaosium # 8803)3 reviews
et al Keith Herber

Chaosium Inc., 2003

Ground Zero of Cthulhu Mayhem- Welcome to Hell!
The wonderful thing about roleplaying games are their endless possibilities for action- one can literally do anything within the framework of the rules; the only limit is the glass ceiling of your imagination. Though there IS the limitation put forth by the necessities of playing a particular module or campaign- if the game takes place in Canada, it is probably a good idea to go there and not to ...

The Complete Pegana (Call of Cthulhu)4 reviews
Lord Dunsany

Chaosium Inc., 2006

Visit Lovely Pegana
Dunsany is a master of language and of myth. Reading his prose reminds me of listening to Bach; seeing light through stained-glass windows. Anything by Dunsany (John Edward Moreton Drax Plunkett, Lord Dunsany) is worth reading; the Complete Pegana is exceptional. There is something in Dunsany's construction of an alternate world of gods and men, of the Great god, who made the world and then ...

S. Petersen's Field Guide to Creatures of the Dreamlands (Call of Cthulhu Horror Roleplaying)2 reviews
Sandy Petersen, Lynn Willis

Chaosium Inc., 1989

Besides being a game accessory, it's a very nice guidebook
This is an accessory to the Call of Cthulhu role-playing game, detailing numerous monstrous creatures from various Lovecraftian mileaus. It features a size comparison chart and wonderful art throughout. The Guide can quite easily be used by a non-gamer fan of Lovercraft as there are no game-specific statistics, only narrative. Overall, a well-done book.

Miskatonic University: A Sourcebook (Call of Cthulhu Horror Roleplaying)2 reviews
Sam Johnson

Chaosium, 2005

MAYBE THE BEST SUPPLEMENT YET!
Miskatonic University...that renowned institution of higher learning made famous (or infamous) in the tales of the Cthulhu Mythos by H.P. Lovecraft and others, comes to life in this fantastic supplement for the Call of Cthulhu role-playing game from Chaosium. Within these pages you'll find everything you'll need to attend, work at, or investigate the hallowed and haunted halls of Miskatonic. ...

The Spiraling Worm: Man Versus the Cthulhu Mythos (Call of Cthulhu Fiction)11 reviews
David Conyers, John Sunseri

Chaosium Inc., 2007

Good stuff!
I came here to write a nice review of the book, but after reading all of the positive comments already posted I don't think there's much I can add. The only detractor for me was the cover art. I know Chaosium reissues their more successful titles and if this one gets a reprint I'd like to see it with a new cover. I hope these two authors pair up again for another go at it.

Shadows of Yog-Sothoth: A Global Campaign to Save Mankind (Call of Cthulhu Horror Roleplaying)5 reviews
Sandy Petersen

Chaosium Inc., 2004

A GRAND, MULTI-PART CAMPAIGN
This 176 page soft cover book is a seven part campaign adventure for the Call of Cthulhu role-playing game. Set in the late 1920's, the scenarios can be played independently or as part of a massive campaign to halt the threat of a sinister cult who is trying to raise the city of R'Lyeh from the ocean's depth and release the Great Old Ones on the world. The campaign is geared towards more ...
