Chasing Dreams
Give Checker Book Publishing their due: they have mined the Winsor McCay motherload with great diligence. The physical dimensions of their books have often resulted in reprints that are of academic value only, but even that is better than all the gaps that have existed between infrequent and incomplete printings of "Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend" and "Little Nemo." McCay's work is not easy to ...

Classic adventure
The plots are ridiculous and the characters are thin, but that is all inconsequential. Flash Gordon is FUN. It's hard to read Alex Raymond's comic strips without the Queen soundtrack running through my head from the early 1980s movie. And all the principals from that movie are from the comic strip: Dale Arden, the constant damsel-in-distress; Princess Aura, the manipulative yet beautiful ...

Throughout the 20th century, newspaper comic strips have been a staple of American popular culture. Winsor McCay's "Little Nemo In Slumberland" was a color comic strip that debuted in the New York 'Hearld' on October 15, 1905 and achieved an immense popularity almost overnight. It continued to be published until December 1913, when McCay was pressed by his editor to suspend the series in order to ...

Thus ends the original Flash Gordon
From 1934 to 1945, Alex Raymond captivated many a reader of the comics page every Sunday for eleven years. "Flash Gordon" was a strip unlike any other--a blend of science fiction, fantasy, lush location and heroics--the early years of which inspired George Lucas' "Star Wars" films. This is the final volume in Checker's seven-volume reprints of Flash Gordon. Flash, Zarkov and Dale, unable to ...

High adventure and jingoism
My reviews for the first two issues of Checker's Steve Canyon series would suggest that my mind is made up in advance in its favour. Actually, the strip has a couple of strikes against it: 1) the hero is a little bland and too iconically good for my tastes and 2) while patriotism may have its place, if it crosses into jingoism it becomes an irritant. However, the sidekick Happy Easter provides a ...

More classic adventure!
The adventure strip on the comics page has not yet quite gone the way of the dodo, but it is definitely in spotted owl territory: rare and threatened constantly by outside forces (such as newspaper economics). Certainly, the few that are left are bland. None can compare the adventure strips of yore, and among these, Flash Gordon is one of the tops. The title character is a near perfect ...

Caniff was such a master!
For years, I have been more familiar with Caniff's "Terry & the Pirates" than with "Steve Canyon". Having bought this volume, though, I can't wait to get more. Milt knew how to tell a story and was an incredible artist. As a cartoonist myself (I draw the strip "Tuttle's") I am envious of the freedom Caniff had. Not just in space, but that he was apparently given more than a month at the ...

overwhelmingly funny
What a wonderful book of one of the greatest comic strips!* Beautifully produced on great stock, the book is a gem! Besides the tremendous early strips there is much info on Mort Walker's life. You can't go wrong, especially at Amazon's great price. And like the Peanuts reprints there is more to come. A great Xmas present!!! * Hopefully this book will get great distribution as today's Beetle ...

I wish it won't be the last one...
This is the last paperback from the sojourn serie. I had waited for a long time for it to be released, because the original publisher, Crossgen, disappeared, leaving behind him several wonderful but unfinished series : Ruse, El Cazador, and Sojourn! Thnaks a lot, Checker Book Publishing, to reprint the paperbacks that never got released before! First, the drawing is beautiful! The landscapes ...

Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon, Vol.4
I purchased Vol.3 and Vol.4 as gifts for my son, who is a professional animator. He was thrilled with both books! He already owned Vol.1 and Vol.2 and stated that the artist's technique and style development was clearly visible as one progresses through the volumes 1-4. Great "study" books for any animation artist.

Day in, day out - for 40 years...
...how does he do it?? One thing I had noticed was a fair amount of rigor in the Steve Canyon stories, whereas I had seen some appallingly poor inconsistencies on other strips. For instance, in a Flash Gordon episode, Flash leaves a dangerous prisoner's cell unlocked so that he can escape and lead Flash to his lair. The operation is a success! The bad guy leads Flash to his lair, though only ...

not a collins fan, but I totally recommend this book
I am not a fan of much of Max Allan Collins' work, but this book is a great exception. The reprints of the first three storylines that Collins wrote are very entertaining and make for an enjoyable read. The first storyline features Angeltop, the popular Flattop's daughter, and the son of the Brow. The next storyline revolves around the Two-Face type villain Haf-and-Haf. Both of these ...

You do, ducky!
This volume, covering 1950 (the year the Korean War began), is the fourth in the Canyon series, which begins in 1947. I have reviewed each of the three earlier instalments. Much has been said about the cinematic technique in comics but, as Horn's "World Encyclopedia of Comics" (WEC) points out, the comics were there first. Cutting, framing and panning were practiced as early as in the time of ...

I just loved it.When I first opened it, it wasn't very apelling to me, and I took several days to start reading. The first story I found a little lame, but the art was beautiful. And then I started reading all the others stories.Man, I couln't stop felling that thrill, the stories are so great, especially the last one about the actress. It just gives you that chill in the spine combined with ...
