Hands-On Activities for Concrete Learning
Parents and teachers looking for ways to help children understand math -- both in their early years and as the concepts become more abstract -- will do well to start with the exercises herein. Kids internalize the concepts by discovering principles of mathematics (and science) on their own. Material requirements give a purpose to those seemingly useless odds and ends the children won't allow ...

Mad Math Minute: A Race to Master Number Facts
This is an invaluable tool for teaching/reviewing math facts. Also, since students are at different levels, I can easily choose the appropriate level for individual students and challenge them according to their needs.

Promotes Real Understanding of Arithmetic
This is an excellent collection of daily lessons that provide instruction and drill and practice of mental arithmetic. If your student can add and subtract but needs to jump to the next level of automaticity and mastery, this book is for you. Each lesson took my second grade son and I about 30 minutes to complete. Then he took around another 30 minutes to complete the drill and practice ...

Read It! Draw It! Solve It!--- Love It!
This workbook is composed of activities that combine reading, math, written expression, and problem-solving. The student must read the problem and draw a picture of how they view the passage, then they must solve the problem in a through a pictoral manner. This allows the child to show how they solve the problems while using their creativity. Teachers may visualize any errors made by the ...

Kids love it!
I supplement my math curriculum with this book in my 1st grade classroom. The students love doing them and ask for more. There is something for all types of learners-- the ones who aren't "math stars" and also the "math stars." I have used the other books by the same author for grades 5 and 7.

Great books
I used these books, that is the K-3 and 4-6 versions, as a kid. These are about the only books I found mentally stimulating and I still look at them when I am at home (I'm 25 now). They emphasize how to THINK about math and problem solving instead of repetition, as in normal textbooks, which I found as a student to be useless and, now as a taxpayer, a complete waste of money. For full ...

Beautiful Minds
I'm a former math major, and I loved these books! I used both volumes about six years ago, when I was homeschooling our youngest son. If I were teaching math in an elementary or middle school, I would try to incorporate these two volumes of biographies into the curriculum. I especially liked that the Reimers included stories of women mathematicians. In my experience, far too many girls give up on ...

Discover More About Fibonaccis
As an undergrad. math major student, I've encountered Fibonacci numbers so many times all over text books... However, this book gives me a lot more insights of this amazing numbers interestingly. This book's especially good at exploring fibonacci numbers in nature as well as its mathematical aspects.

excellent for third graders and ESL
The other two reviews of this item are reviewing the preschool version. This version is for third grade, has a problem for every day of the school year. I have used this product in my third grade classroom for years and now use it with my esl kids. The problems are well written (for the most part) and allow multiple ways to problem solve and cover the essential strands of math for this age ...

Fibonacci Fun
Wow! What a fun way to motivate kids about math and problem solving! I teach gifted and talented elementary school kids and they LOVE these problems. Started them out with the "bee family tree" and they were begging for more. This will be a staple in my classroom from now on!
Building Toothpick Bridges (Math Projects: Grades 5-8)

A Perennially Popular Project!
Although I have made a number of adaptations to this project, the basic concept is excellent as written. (Example of adaptation: we make it non-competitive by setting a target weight for bridges to hold instead of testing all bridges to destruction. Everyone can feel successful, not just the team with the strongest bridge.) Students in middle school can learn a lot about structures, measurement, ...

Mental Math Practice
I have used Mental Math in the Middle Grades with my 4th and 5th grade students for the last 5 years. The exercises really help them with being able to compute numbers in their heads. They also are more well prepared for the Michigan Educational Assessment Tests. I would like to encourage the 2nd and 3rd grade teachers in my school to use the Mental Math for Primary Grades

FANTASTIC!
A wonderful collection of short stories about mathematicians from many different time periods, including Pythagoras, Hypatia, Isaac Newton and 12 others. Makes great family reading, as the book is aimed probably for 9-12 year olds, but is definitely interesting on an adult level, too. Great for stimulating interest in mathematics, history and philosophy.

I have purchased 2 plexer books for my classroom and my students beg me to give them more!!!! They love the challenge of trying to figure out each plexer. They even want to try and come up with their own plexers. These books are great teacher tools

Excellent for classroom math teachers and bored students!
This book has been a God-send for those students who finish their work early and they say they have nothing to do. I keep a bulletin board up all the time and change out the puzzles weekly. Of course, plexers are right there in the middle of the "game" bulletin board!! This is a must buy.
Read It! Draw It! Solve It!: Problem Solving With Animal Themes
Elizabeth D. Miller
Dale Seymour Publications, 1999
Integrate reading and mathematics while encouraging young students to think and express themselves creatively. With enough reproducible activities for each day of the school year, the Resource Books for grades 1-5 give students ample opportunity to visually "solve" field-tested word problems by drawing a picture. A fourth Resource Book for grades K-3 offers a similar format, based on animal themes. Several problems have multiple solutions, which ...

Read It! Draw It! Solve It!
This book helped my first graders solve word problems. I began the first weeks with reading it and drawing the problem together and then they were able to do some of the problems by themselves. I also like the book because it concentrated on phonics and sentence writing.
