Dallas Museum of Art: A Guide to the Collection

DMA
This is nice book on a good collection. The DMA is far from a great museum, but it does have some wonderful works. When i walk through it, I always think, what a big building for such a mediocre collection. This book is well done, the author is definitely familiar with the DMA and the text and images attest to that fact...I definitely recommend it..oh and the Nasher Sculpture Garden next door ...

Dazzling and instructive
This book is for the serious jewelry student but even the casual reader could be caught by the amazingly beautiful jewelry in it. The collection consists of Etruscan, Greek and Roman gold jewelry reaching back to the 7th century B.C. and ending around the 3rd century A.D. The text is informative and succinct. The photos are superb. In particular, the technical virtuosity and design elegance ...

excellent
One of the best books on an under-appreciated 18th century still life artist. The article by Eik Kahn is useful to fine artists and describes various approaches and outlooks from the period. The rest of the book is also well written and researched. It should be in every painter's library.
Brice Marden: Work of the 1990s : Paintings, Drawings, and Prints

Brice Marden
Dallas Museum of Art, 1999
His finest work yet
Brice Marden has been considered a master of his craft for nearly three decades and his recent paintings are the most powerful yet. Abandoning the rigid rectangles of his previous work, Marden has embarked upon a looser, yet structural form. The surface and application are still meticulate, reminding one of the sensuality of the oil and beeswax mix of the 60's work. Using what seems to be ...
Van Gogh's Sheaves of Wheat (Dallas Museum of Art publications)

If buying for the images, save your money.
The reproductions are small, and the color is poor. The best example of this is Van Gogh's "Ears of Wheat," which contains beautiful and vibrant greens. The reproduction in the book is dull and a mess of yellow browns. It looks very little like the painting itself, leaving one to wonder about the trueness of the color in the other reproductions. Another painting by Robert Zund, which radiates ...

An Excellent Catalog of an Exhibition of the Wanderers (Itinerants)
If you are primarily interested in precise color as well as good explanations of the movement in all of its stages, I'd strongly recommend THE WANDERERS: MASTERS OF NINETEENTH-CENTURY RUSSIAN PAINTING: AN EXHIBITION FROM THE SOVIET UNION, which does include a number of well-known (to those familiar with the artists) paintings of the Itinerants/Wanderers. Entire sections on the patrons and ...

The Voyage of the Icebergs: Frederic Church's Arctic Masterpiece
This is a truly amazing piece of art. To truly appreciate it you need to see it in person as one can sit for hours in front of it. But it's story is also amazing - laying hidden away for decades. Forgotten. Love the art. Love the book. If you love American art, this is a must have book. And if you are ever in Dallas, please go see it in person at the Dallas Museum of Art.
The Artist and the Camera: Degas to Picasso

Photography as the Painter and Sculptor's Intermediary
I first became aware of the impact of photography on abstract art when I commissioned a portrait. Expecting to be told to sit, instead I was encouraged to strike poses that meant something to me. The artist followed me around with a Polaroid camera. We discussed what the camera was showing, and tried different poses. Eventually, I found one we both liked. Then he made copies of the ...
