Oleanna29 reviews
David Mamet

Dramatists Play Service Inc, 1998

Mainzerjacob got it right!
Although this play has often been characterized as a critique of "political correctness" gone insane, coming as it does on the heels of the Anita Hill-Clarence Thomas hearings, the earlier reviewer got it right. Read the epigraph! This is a play that rewards multiple readings and is worthy of a place in the curriculum of a college English class. One thing is certain: it will inspire class ...

Crimes of the Heart.9 reviews
Beth Henley

Dramatists Play Service, 1998

Beth Henley is the greatest!
I just finished playing Lenny in a college production of this play. It was the most fun I've ever had in any role! I have two sisters myself, and Henley's depiction of that kind of relationship is incredibly real. There are some great scenes and monologues for acting practice, too--one, two, or three women, and a couple for one man and one woman. I recommend it to anyone.

How I Learned to Drive7 reviews
Paula Vogel

Dramatists Play Service Inc, 1999

How I Learned to LOVE this play.
I just went to see my university production of this play, and so I decided to get the book, because it brought out so many emotions many of us have never felt before. This book is so moving and heart wrenching. Lil Bit takes you on an adventure that is so real and so scary, that you can't put the book down. If you get the chance, don't waste it on any other play. This is THE PLAY to read.

The Cripple of Inishmaan8 reviews
Martin McDonagh

Dramatists Play Service, 1998

My favorite McDonagh!!!!
Wonderfully dark, mean and hysterical, but under it all is the message that we all need family, community and each other. McDonagh has an incredible way with very natural stage dialogue and his characters are unique and vivid. I laughed on every page and winced with every vicious attack. Although some may argue that the play is hateful and sad, I have read few plays as ultimately life ...

Steel Magnolias(DPS Acting Edition)12 reviews
Robert Harling

Dramatists Play Service, Inc., 1995

Steel Magnolias
A touching play telling the story of six Southern women, all the action is set in the beauty shop in which they spend their Saturdays and spans the course of a couple years. Each of the women have their own conflict that they come to terms with over the course of the play, most of them dealing with their relationships with one another and other people in their lives. From Clairee and Ouiser, ...

The Diary of Anne Frank12 reviews
Wendy Ann Kesselman, Albert Hackett

Dramatists Play Service, 1998

Amazing Book
Online Reader- After having just read this book for an English assiment I have only just now realized how much a War can do to someone. I admit to crying throughout the book, and while reading I was heartbroken to hear of all of the misfortune that befell these inocent people. And to think that one man-Hitler-could cause all of this pain and misery made me insanly angry at him, and ashamed ...

Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead9 reviews
Bert V. Royal

Dramatists Play Service, 2007

Peanuts for the New Millenium
This play is a hilarious take on the Peanuts gang with a heart-wrenching ending. It's a true look at becoming an adult today, a must read.

The Foreigner11 reviews
Larry Shue

Dramatists Play Service, 1998

Pure Genius
Having taken part in a performance of "The Foreigner" over ten years ago, I was anxious to take a trip down memory lane. After reading the play today, I am reminded what a precise and humorous tale this is. Despite remaining relatively obscure, it is one of my favorites. Larry Shue's attention to detail and sharp wit make this play a laugh a minute and thought provoking. Charlie accompanies ...

Santaland Diaries & Seasons Greetings: 2 Plays6 reviews
David Sedaris

Dramatists Play Service, 1998

Very funny, sarcastic.
It would appear many of stories are somewhat based off the authors life. Some of the stories are just sarcastic takes on society and how people act though. I liked this book, the first of the authors I had ever read. I was compelled to make my purchase after hearing the author on NPR giving an interview and reciting a few paragraphs from the Santaland story. I wasn't disappointed. If you like to ...

Rabbit Hole1 review
David Linsay-Abaire

Dramatists Play Service, 2007

Tragedy and its Aftermath
An unspeakable tragedy affects the lives of the 5 characters in this play. The opening scene gives a hint - a mother folding a young child's clothing that will never be used again. You learn very quickly that the child was killed in an accident, and the story goes on to reveal how it happened, how it affected the characters in the play, and how they each cope with the aftermath. While the ...

M. Butterfly.22 reviews
David Henry Hwang

Dramatists Play Service Inc, 1998

I Was Left Breathless
I recently saw a performance of M. Butterfly at a local theatre, and I was left utterly speechless. The acting was extremely powerful, which brought the story and its themes to life better than any book could. Nevertheless, I'm going to buy a copy of the play!

You Can't Take it With You.9 reviews
Moss Hart, George S. Kaufman

Dramatists Play Service, 1998

Extremely Wonderful!!!
When I first read this play I absolutely loved it. When our school did the production I played the part of Edward Carmichael. It was one of the greatest experiences for me. I loved doing the show, it was soo much fun. To me the show was about a very loving family who has to overcome obstacles. I would love to do the show again.

The Last Days of Judas Iscariot5 reviews
Stephen Adly Guirgis

Dramatists Play Service, 2006

Guirgis writes from the heart and leaves it all on the page
Stephen Adly Guirgis is a playwright that as a young person living in an urban city you feel you could chill with. He's also a playwright that if you're an affluent privileged person you'd still love to meet...why? The guy makes you think. In The Last Days of Judas Iscariot we are met with a cast of characters that are so famous and infamous that we can't help but get excited to see what's ...

Bat Boy: The Musical10 reviews
Keythe Farley, Brian Flemming, ...

Dramatists Play Service, 2002

Thrilling!
I read this play and later saw it, too, performed at the local high school. The script itself is a brilliant work, but if you really want the full experience it is a must-see show. The music is heart-rending and inspiring, and the lyrics are creative and meaningful. I find the story, if a bit twisted, to be very truthful to our modern society, and it gives insight to our natural discriminatory ...

Arsenic and Old Lace12 reviews
Joseph Kesselring

Dramatists Play Service Inc, 1995

Witty, funny and a tad disturbing
It was hard to read this without thinking of the wonderful movie. In a nutshell it is a play about a family where mental illness (insanity) is rampant. One character thinks he is Teddy Roosevelt and is building the Panama canal in the cellar. Two characters think they are performing a charity by poisoning lonely elderly men which the Teddy Roosevelt character perceives to be victims of yellow ...

Harvey6 reviews
Mary Chase

Dramatists Play Service, 1999

A strange white rabbit between us
Ok: I had already seen the film by Henry Koster, and then I have red the play of Mary Chase; but I was really determinate to read this book, I've tried it 15 years, and only by Amazon I've found it. It was a good idea: the film is very good and it respects surely the text, but here we have the original form of a wonderful idea: Elwood P. Dowd is a man, sure not stupid, which doesn't like the ...

Having Our Say The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years.96 reviews
Emily Mann, Annie Elizabeth Delany, ...

Dramatists Play Service Inc, 1998

The delightful Delany sisters
This book was recommended to me by my 95-year-old mother, and I must say it was an excellent recommendation. Author Amy Hill Hearth must have had numerous conversations with Sadie (age 102) and her "little sister" Bessie (100). The book is written with the words and the spirit of these two special ladies shining through each page. The Delany sisters were born to a father who was a former ...

The Dining Room.5 reviews
A. R. Gurney

Dramatists Play Service Inc, 1998

Tasteful or Tasty?
This is Gurney's best play. It is one of the best plays of the last few decades. Oddly, it is not nearly as famous as second and third rate Albee, although it is still in print, thank God, and is anthologized, rightly, as a great American play. It is rarely produced. Albee, Mamet and Shepard have dominated the contemporary theatre as the visionaries of our time, due chiefly to their ability to ...

Wait Until Dark3 reviews
Frederick Knott

Dramatists Play Service Inc, 1998

A Classic Theatrical Thriller
Although he had a degree in law and a distinguished military career, Frederick Knott (1916-2002) is best recalled as the author of two very famous plays: 1952's DIAL M FOR MURDER and 1966's WAIT UNTIL DARK. Both enjoyed extremely successful runs in London and New York; both received memorable film adaptations; and both remain popular on the professional and amateur stage to this day. The plays ...
