Justice
This is one of the most profound books I have ever read. The topic goes to the heart of the struggle for the political soul of this country in a way that is both scholarly and objective.

crime and punishment
The life of alcoholic Patsy MacLemoore seems to be heading nowhere until she is arrested and tried for manslaughter. She tries to live sober and learn how to make good decisions for herself. Her story shows how our connections to others, be they friends or passing strangers, affect us in unexpected ways, all of them meaningful if we can reognize and accept what is important from each encounter ...

It's Time to Stand Up and Look Around
Thomas Friedman uses his extensive international experience to first, set the motivation for Americans everywhere to stand up and look around at our political, physical, chemical, and bioloigical environment from a global perspective; and, second, describe a way to unleash the historical American potential that has always risen to address threats to ourselves, our country, and our planet. In ...

What else is there to say? Essential reading!
By the time more than two hundred people have reviewed a book and a hundred and seventy people have given it five stars, adding one's own two cents to the mix seems almost beside the point. Yet the significant minority who have written highly negative reviews seem to call out for response. Besides, I happened to love the book and want simply to share that fact. I knew nothing about the ...

Enlighten yourself... a must read!
This book should be a required read. It enlightened me to things I never knew were happening. Although the stories are at times difficult to read and imagine ever happening, I couldn't put it down. This book is so engaging! I enjoyed learning about this time in history and about this boys experience. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in culture, history, true stories, etc. A great read!
How Markets Fail: The Logic of Economic Calamities

John Cassidy
Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2009
Brilliant, Damning Explanation for How We Got In This Mess
I have only a limited economics background, but Cassidy's writing is so lucid that didn't matter. The author coins the term "rational irrationality" to explain how, in a financial bubble, individual players are acting in their own rational self-interest--even if, taken as a hole, the actions of all the players lead to irrational(and often disastrous) outcomes. Cassidy traces the origins of the ...

A Shatteringly Powerful Epic of Narrative Nonfiction
Tears in the Darkness is a model of literary joinery, every sentence planed plumb-line straight and seamlessly dovetailed into the next. Full disclosure: I know the authors. That said, the swelling chorus of almost unanimous approval, here, argues my point that the Normans' fastidious craftsmanship and exhaustive, almost superhuman research propel what might have been one more tour of duty ...

Will Recommend to Everyone! Both Engrossing and Disturbing.
I would not normally be interested in a military type book, but I read this because it was a gift and it had gotten numerous excellent reviews. I believe this is the best book I have read all year! I learned so much I didn't know about the war in Iraq and especially from the perspective of the soldiers right there in the middle of it. This book had a profound effect on me and I developed ...

I learned so much.
If you love poker and want deeper understanding of the game historically, psychologically, etc. get this book. McManus is highly skilled at serving up tons of information in an enjoyable and easy to read manner. I can't tell you how much I learned from reading it. Most of all, it made me realize how pertinent and valuable poker-related thinking skills are to decisions away from the felt on ...
Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice

Rutgers University Project on Economics and Children
Nine months before Rosa Parks famously and courageously took a stand against the stranglehold of the Jim Crow laws, fifteen-year-old Claudette Colvin also refused to give up her seat to a white person on a crowded Montgomery city bus. Claudette's bold move added fuel to the outrage that African Americans felt toward the oppression, ignorance, and hatred associated with the country's segregation ...

Alphabet Juice
For anyone who enjoys examining the curiosities of the English language, this is a good choice for your library. It is not a main course novel; it is dessert. A wordsmith's delight. Pick it up any time you have a spare moment, open it at random, and get a laugh out of the wit and wisdom of Roy Blount Jr.

An important book in anti-reductionist psychology and philosophy
Not a coffee table book. Not a "be nice" sermon from the land of the bodhisattvas. This book is a rigorous argument, based on the history of European ideas and psychoanalytical doctrine, that we fail to recognize and value intelligently one of life's greatest pleasures: generosity. It goes deep into the the scientific and political sources of our contemporary confusion and unhappiness. ...

Flannery O'Connor

Completely Unique
This is my favorite book of short stories. I am amazed at how the author can blend such a diverse mixture of feelings into a story. Each story is humorous and heartbreaking. O'Connor has a knack for examining the thoughts in her characters' minds, and although they seem to be a little over the top, the characters are grounded in reality. I enjoy the fact that you can read this book for the ...

Insight into the inner life of children
Have you ever wondered about the inner life of children, how they understand things, what their stream of consciousness is like, how they perceive the world, what their feelings are really like? I watched my own children grow up, talked with them daily, fed them, played with them, but always felt that I was missing a lot about their inner world. Gopnik answered some of my questions and showed me ...

Unbelievably good writer
Okay, maybe men can write. He is so astute and his writing is so funny and sharp. I could live without the extreme graphic violence of the Vikings who spoke like they were from the midwest, but then I realized the irony wouldn't work without it. I thought from his picture that he would be pretentious for some reason, but that is definitely not the case. This is amazing work.

Perfect introduction and will make you a rabid fan of Lydia Davis!
I first heard about her about two years ago when I read an interview in Poets & Writers; what I found most interesting was the way she loved to experiment with the form. Any aspiring writer would do well to study and enjoy this book, but anyone would love it because she is SO funny! Some of the stories are SHORT indeed, while others are much longer. My favorite so far is Sketches in the Life of ...

Dead Aid
I read several books on this topic. Dambisa is right. Foreign is a powerful means of exercising control over a countries natural resources. That's why they keeps tribes fighting against each other. They supply both parties with weapons to keep them fighting. Less foreign aid means less control of a country's natural resources by European, Asians and America and others. The people in need self ...

Constructive guilt
A punch on the face of those like me, and the author, who complain too much about "how few is done" to protect the enviroment, but don't usually ask themselves "how much can I do". A field guide, if you have courage, or at least something to meditate about.
