The Backyard Astronomer's Guide65 reviews
Terence Dickinson, Alan Dyer

Firefly Books, 2008

Best beginners astronomy book
This is a great book for those interested in visual astronomy with a telescope. Probably my favorite for beginners. Has excellent tips on what kind of scope to get and how to find objects to view. Very easy to read. A must read for anyone interested in a telescope or anyone who as recently obtained one.

Astronomy 2010 (Calendar)1 review

Firefly Books, 2009

Astronomy Calendar
I am very pleased, as always since 2002 when I started buying this calendar each year, and entertained with my Astronomy Calendar. The images are 'heavenly' and make great viewing. There's great information on each 'box' date on the Galaxy, present and past, and the space for each day is nice and large.

Weather 2010: With daily weather trivia (Calendar)

Firefly Books, 2009

Weather is beautiful, threatening, moody and capricious. It can paint a dazzling face on a winter morning or wreak disaster at a moment's notice. Even at its most ordinary, weather is endlessly fascinating in its variability. In Weather 2010 , world-renowned photographers present remarkable and often breathtaking images of a range of atmospheric conditions, from a dark horizon fractured by lightning to the terrifying funnel cloud of a tornado. ...

Optical Illusions: The Science of Visual Perception (Illusion Works)3 reviews
Al Seckel

Firefly Books, 2009

Nice book, very misleading title.
One of the most beautiful and wonderful books I own is Al Seckel's "Masters of Deception: Escher, Dali & the Artists of Optical Illusions" (2004). Unlike most other books on illusions, the book itself is a creative tour de force. And Seckel supplements his creation with visually striking and important media at his website. I think I've already given away as many as ten copies of that book to ...

Clueless in the Kitchen: A Cookbook for Teens and other Beginners (The Clueless series)25 reviews
Evelyn Raab

Firefly Books, 1998

Don't let the title fool you
This book may say "for teens", and when I read "teens", I thought, cinnamon toast and french bread pizzas. These are all full-fledged meals, "made from scratch" recipes that ANYBODY can do. I find this cookbook very informative and easy to understand; you WILL use this book!

Once Upon a Potty -- Boy109 reviews
Alona Frankel

Firefly Books, 2007

Got the point across quickly
This book worked well for giving my son the idea of going potty. Best of all, he found the part where Joshua was trying to figure out what the potty was for very humerous so he wanted to read it often. I agree with others about the terms used, but since he can't read, I just substituted the words I preferred. The author gets across the point that sometimes it takes time to learn and also time to ...

NightWatch: A Practical Guide to Viewing the Universe106 reviews
Terence Dickinson

Firefly Books, 2006

simply awesome
If you are a beginner star gazer like me and know nothing about stars and planetary location, this book will guide you to open up your eyes to the wonderful unknown world. It is detailed but will not overwhelm you with information like so many other books out there. I highly recommend to others.

Once Upon a Potty -- Girl95 reviews
Alona Frankel

Firefly Books, 2007

Tried and true method
I got this book when my boy was potty training (the boy's version). He is over 40 now. Every once in awhile he reminds me of some of the pages in the story that he remembers. That's a pretty big impression, don't you think? I recommend this book for anyone who needs to introduce potty training in a positive way.

Turtles 2010 (Calendar)

Firefly Books, 2009

Two hundred million years ago, these self-contained creatures shared Earth with the dinosaurs. Yet long after the demise of their contemporaries, turtles live on. It is not surprising, then, that they have been associated with strength, endurance and longevity throughout history, however slowly they may move. In Turtles 2010 , world-renowned photographers catch an intriguing array of these ancient reptiles on film. The detailed images provide a ...

World Ocean Census: A Global Survey of Marine Life1 review
Darlene Trew Crist, Gail Scowcroft, ...

Firefly Books, 2009

Science as adventure
I first heard about the Census on Marine Life in the news this past summer. So I was interested to come across this book. Apparently this is the "official" book (at least for non-scientists) about the census. It's quite something, when you think about it, the idea of counting every species in the ocean. This is a gorgeous book. What I like is that not only is it packed with beautiful pictures ...

National Audubon Society Guide to Nature Photography: Digital Edition6 reviews
Tim Fitzharris

Firefly Books, 2008

Finally a Digital Edition from Tim
I have been a fan of Tim Fitzharris since I was a boy. I use to read his early Audubon books and dream of being a wildlife photographer. Tim Fitzharris has done it again only this time a digital version. He covers histograms, and has a great chapter on exposure. This is by far one of his best works yet. I'm looking forward to the new digital version of Photographing National Parks. Tim has proven ...

National Audubon Society Guide to Photographing America's National Parks: Digital Edition5 reviews
Tim Fitzharris

Firefly Books, 2009

Love the parks, love this book!
I love our National Parks, and have visited seven of them so far. I wish I'd had this book before I started. It has coffee-table book quality images, providing the views that we all aspire to. There's good photography tips in here, as well. You'll enjoy looking through this book even if you've never stepped foot in any of these parks -- but I'll bet after reading it, you'll schedule your own ...
