FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS417 reviews
Hunter S. Thompson

Flamingo, 1993

A classic
I read this first in college, and then again recently. It's still just as funny and wonderful as ever.

Interpreter of Maladies463 reviews
Jhumpa Lahiri

Flamingo, 2000

One of the best books I've ever read
To give a frame of reference, some of my favorite authors are Margaret Atwood and Barbara Kingsolver. I have searched and searched for another introspective, intelligent, strong female voice, and finally I have found it. I plan on buying every one of her books and keeping them forever. In this book alone, my wisdom cache has increased, certainly the mark of a great book.

No Logo164 reviews
Naomi Klein

Flamingo, 2001

Amazing book with a lot of things to do with globalization
This book is extremely useful and important and has a lot of thing to do with society.

The God of Small Things871 reviews
Arundhati Roy

Flamingo, 1998

The Glimmer of An Immense Sea
Reading this novel is akin to being reborn- as a snake eases out of its present coil and strips down to a more essential skin, so too will this violated madonna of lyricism attune you to the fundamentals of what it is to be human. This book strips away the veneer of polite society and illumes the central questions of humanity: why do we hate, love who we love and live as we do? At the end of ...

The Master and Margarita341 reviews
Mikhail Bulgakov

Flamingo, 1969

A GIFT FROM THE GRAVE
I found Mikhail Bulgakov's life terribly sad, as I progressed through this novel, realizing how much of it is autobiographical. Here was a brilliant man---the grandson of Priests, who was obviously quite theologically challenged in atheist Russia. His motif surrounding the existence of Jesus and the Devil, told through stories of Faust and Pontius Pilate, was obviously his personal desire to ...

Angela's Ashes1832 reviews
Frank McCourt

Flamingo, 1999

Trust Me
I was loaned this book by a friend. He told me just to "trust him" and read it. I was hesitant and wasn't sure if I would like this book, but now you can "trust me". If you have any interest at all in Ireland, culture, sociology, or that particular time period you will love this insightful memoir. This book will stay with you, and after only a dozen pages you will be hooked and unable to put ...

Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire67 reviews
Amanda Foreman

Flamingo, 1999

Will turn you into a history buff!
AMAZING read! I have never been interested in History of any sort before and afte reading a bit about her on Wikipedia I couldn't wait to learn more! She is fascinating, flaws and all! This book gave a wonderful outline of the time period, the rulers in charge and the goverment, but loaded with interesting facts and how her life had impacted so much of that time period. It proved to me that times ...

The Namesake476 reviews
Jhumpa Lahiri

Flamingo, 2004

You felt like you knew these people
She captures little idiosyncracies that are really authentic. You get attached to the characters. The ending (I don't want to spoil it for you so I wont tell you what happens at the end) makes you think wait what just happened.

The Things They Carried (Flamingo)705 reviews
Tim O'Brien

Flamingo, 1991

"Some dumb thing happens a long time ago and you can't ever forget it..."
... is a quote from O'Brien's daughter, Kathleen, in the story "Field Trip." Kathleen had just turned 10, and O'Brien had taken her back to Vietnam, to show her where her dad had been. He was trying to convey what it was like to have been a soldier in that war. As the story is written, clearly he had not been very successful. Going back to the sadness and failure of Vietnam is so totally ...

Camera Lucida: Reflections on Photography (Flamingo)17 reviews
Roland Barthes

Flamingo, 1984

shocked
I am somewhat stunned and dismayed by the negative reviews of this book. In fact, it has seem to elicit a sense of vitriol in some. It is a brilliant book. How does one state simply such a complicated phenomenon. One doesn't. Those who rated this book so poorly biggest gripe was the complexity of the writing. Well - it is a complex topic. But, I think Barthes beautifully and deftly ...

Brave New World4 reviews
Aldous Huxley

Flamingo, 1977

A few thoughts with "religious" considerations
This remarkable book was written around 1931. As far as I know it is the earliest of the modern dystopia novels ("1984", "Fahrenheit 451"). Read carefully . . . . It is a story, centered in London, of a world where life is lived out in controlled, contented bliss. Genetic engineering contributes to a smoothly functioning caste system. Sexual promiscuity is the norm, even instilled in ...

A Problem from Hell187 reviews
Samantha Power

Flamingo, 2003

Thorough Study of Genocide History
Samantha Power has produced a history of genocide through the 20th century. She presents an impressive accounts of genocide against Armenians in Turkey, Jews in Holocaust, Tutsi in Rwanda, Kurds in Iraq, and Bosnian Muslims in the Balkan war; the stories are extremely well-written, and the images are vivid. Apart from stories about the conflicts themselves, she gives credit to the individuals who ...

On Cats
Doris May Lessing

Flamingo, 2002

Doris Lessing's love affair with cats began at a young age, when she became intrigued with the semi-feral creatures on the African farm where she grew up. Her fascination remained undiminished by the handsome domesticated creatures who shared her flats and her life in London and grew into real love with El Magnifico, the awkwardly lovable cat who in his later years suffered the great indignity of becoming a three legged beast. Consisting of ...

Tropic of Cancer (Harperperennial Classics)160 reviews
Henry Miller

Flamingo, 1993

Know the background before you read this classic
Read as much about the story behind this book as possible before reading the book itself. In a sense, it is nothing more than a diary of a man in Paris during the "great" Depression who was passionate about writing, so passionate he simply walked away from a mundane job one day, managed to get to Paris on ten dollars, and lived by his wits, if starving is living. Had it not been for Anaïs ...

Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail (Harperperennial Classics)69 reviews
Hunter S. Thompson

Flamingo, 1994

I'm Fearful After Reading This...
This book's setting is eerily similar to the current state of affairs going on in with the 2008 Presidential Election, with the Democrats picking themselves apart while the Republicans sit back and enjoy the show. Richard Nixon is shown as the abomination that he was and HST's writing is as animated and humorous as I have ever seen it. This book surpassed my expectations and was a surprisingly ...

Wasted405 reviews
Marya Hornbacher

Flamingo, 1999

i am wasted, but i'm ready...
this book is beautifully written. marya hornbacher is a phenomenal writer, and i have read this book at least 5 times over, never growing tired of her vivid descriptions of an uphill battle with an eating disorder. i've read all 3 of hornbacher's books (all of which i finished in approximately 3-4 days, because i could NOT put them down), and truly look forward to any further books/memoirs she ...

To the Lighthouse (Flamingo Modern Classics)168 reviews
Virginia Woolf

Flamingo, 1995

An insightful, sensitive reading.
The idea of Virginia Woolf's fiction being read aloud effectively has struck me as an impossibility. The very interiority of Woolf's style seemed to suggest that readers hear the narrative voice within themselves. This reading proves me dead wrong. Virginia Leishman's reading--and interpretation--added much to my passion for a novel I have always loved. Readers--and listeners--new to Virigina ...

The Atrocity Exhibition (Flamingo Modern Classics)30 reviews
J.G. Ballard

Flamingo, 2001

the atrocity exhibition
the atrocity exhibition is a watershed and seminal work in the canon of jg ballard. ballard is regarded and indeed classified as a writer in the 'science fiction' genre. if you consider science fiction to be the domain of 'star wars' et al. then reappraise, reevaluate and restart your imaginative capacity NOW. ballard bestrides the real essence of what science fiction is all about. along with ...
