Mary Higgins Clark

Absolute must read. It will keep you guessing until the last chapter.
I found this book on my mom's bookshelf, and picked it up just so I could have something to read while waiting at a doctors office. I didn't expect it to be any good since I never liked Mary Higgins Clark novels, and I was totally wrong. I couldn't wait to get home from the doctors office to finish it. The story is very gripping and scary, everything you read makes it seem like the husband is ...

Intensity-his mind was flooded with profound ideas
This book is sublime, a GEM. In his subjective view of the world -"with half closed eyes and somewhat closed ears, to see and hear the form and voice of being" he arrived at an inspiring insight about life: supreme meaning of being can consist only in the fact that is,not that it is not or is no longer; nature, the mystery of love, the psyche, life, human beings, a state of lively contemplation ...

Very Helpful
This book was very helpful in my own spiritual journey. It's worth all the time you'll spend reading it.
The Interpretation of Cultures

Clifford Geertz
Fontana Press, 1993
An Imperative Classic
"Man is an animal suspended in webs of significance he himself has spun, I take culture to be those webs..." These cultural "webs of significance" Clifford Geertz speaks of are constructed of religious beliefs and practices, cultural customs, social interactions, attitudes and behavior -- everything around us that we have constructed as rational beings capable of thought and imagination. ...

Historical fiction at its finest
This book was so good that it caused me to slack off on my studies. I don't normally read too much fiction, but a friend who is a fellow WWII buff recommended it, and I'm glad I took him up on it. The story follows US Naval Captain Victor "Pug" Henry and his family in the years leading up to WWII. The characters are all intriguing and lifelike, and Wouk's storytelling ability is second to none. ...

Geoffrey Chaucer
Fontana Press, 1996
a classic with good reason
Had wanted to read this for about 15 years, but it's funny how more books are published and then you have to read them? How 'bout that? This book has been out six centuries, so I guessed another 15 years would not hurt me. Chaucer's facility with language, his ability to rhyme, his familiarity with the human condition, and his ability to link the human conditions to elements of people's trades ...

what can i say?
this book is one of my favorite. there is a sadness and untrustworthiness that keeps bringing itself out in this book, as soon as you think things are going to start to get better someone does something to mess it up. as far as the relevance to history, it keeps up pretty good. i had to look it up and double check because i almost didnt believe everything that happened. this book got me ...

An amazing story.
I first read this book when I was about eleven, over thirty years later I bought it again, and the story was just as amazing to me as an adult as it was when I was a child. Jan's story has to be read to believed.

No words
I just finished reading this for the second time. I regret only that I had let about 7-8 years lapse between the fist time I read both it and Winds of War because I forgot what happened to the characters and thus rushed through it more than I wanted to. The history and philosphy in these books is superior. The writing is beyond fault. This is historical fiction at its very finest. I cannot ...

Roland Barthes
Fontana Press, 1993
STRONGLY recommended for anyone with insomnia
Roland Barthes strikes me as an unreliable logician and a philosopher that one should be wary of. His premises are largely unsupported (or supported only weakly) and his statements often paradoxical or vastly generalized. His vocabulary is of such an unnecessarily high level that it strikes me as a smokescreen for faulty logic. Furthermore, I side with John Irving in his defense of Kurt ...

By far the best book I have ever read
This is one excellent book. It is a must read for people who have been in the military and for that fact, anyone and everyone. This book starts with the Class of 1966 as the enter Westpoint. They start out as freshmen (I believe the term was plebes), the book takes the readers through the trials and tribulations of each of the main characters as they endure that first year. As the book ...

Patrick O'Brian
Fontana Press, 1985
Great Novel!
This was perhaps one of the best novels in the series. For those that enjoyed the film, loosely based on this book and others from the Aubrey-Maturin set, the book is far greater than the movie. I greatly enjoyed this volume in the series.

Roy Porter
Fontana Press, 1999
My Best Buy this year!
This is a magnificent overview of the history of disease and medicine from antiquity to the modern age. Porter writes with humour and insight, selecting carefully from the abundance of evidence the significant moments and figures. Both fascinating and informative this book is also extremely good value with its 718 pages, plus bibliography and index. This is my best buy for the year.

W.E.B. Griffin

Vintage WEB Griffin!
In this volume of the Corps saga , we see several of the characters introduced in "Counterattack" elevated to new prominence. Newly promoted Captain Charley Galloway becomes the commanding officer of VMF 229 , and along with Bily Dunn sets about preparing the young squadron to be thrown into the cauldron of Guadalcanal. Flem Pickering continues to grow in importance to the ongoing tale of ...

Bernard Cornwell

A Great Series
This is another entry on the Sharpe series. It is fun, entertaining and very readable. Cornwell's research is as excellent as usual. He takes some licenses for the shake of the story and continuity, but this is OK. Some people are outraged by the portrait of some of the real historical characters, but historical characters are rarely depicted accurately in historical fiction, so I think this can ...

W.E.B. Griffin

Just fine as a semi-historical war novel
If you buy a W E B Griffin novel looking for shootin' and lootin' combat action, you'll probably be a little disappointed. For new readers, I strongly recommend the first two volumes of The Corps series. As an ensemble, the characters are the most compelling of Griffin's works and the stories follow a mostly historical time line. Readers whose view of WWll comes from old B&W movies may find ...

W.E.B. Griffin

A first-rate military book!
I really enjoy Griffin's stories about the Marine Corps during the Second World War. This book covers the time from the bombing of Pearl Harbour on December 7, 1941 to the battle of Guadalcanal in August of 1942. Griffin humanizes his characters while not being shy to show personal human courage and sacrifice as well as crushing defeats suffered by the US during the initial stages of the War in ...

Tom Clancy
Fontana Press, 1990
One of my favorites by Clancy
This is my favorite novel by Clancy! This is a good balance of action and political intrigue that I crave. I wish more would create such intrigue as Clancy did in this book. I like politics and I like it alot when an author shows how corrupt politics can get and the scheme that they can create. This novel gives a good insight into what possibly might happen, when politics and personal ...

Grass Roots by Stuart Woods
Absolutely Woods' best book. This was his first novel and I think it is his best. I have enjoyed every one I have read of his, but this one was like living my childhood over again. I "know" many of the characters in this story. It is a very well written storyline and the characters are all exactly as I remember from the 50's and 60's. Great book and a great read!
