Pink: The Exposed Color in Contemporary Art and Culture
I thought "Pink" to be a wonderful mixture of artistic styles. It captures emotions of humor, politics, sex, sorrow, awakening, happiness, and more. Often thought of as a kitchy color, you will find so much more to the color and word "Pink" by purchasing this book.

Amazing Images
These shots are from an alternate reality, maybe the one where Blade Runner was filmed. They are pictures of ultra-modern, ultra-crowded Asian cities, some including a slice of pre-modern life. The subject matter alone is a bit overwhelming. But the style is what puts it over the top. About 3/5 of the pictures were shot at night with long exposure. This creates eerie skies and unnatural, ...

Hatje Cantz Publishers, 2006
Shrinking cities have pushed urban design and classical city planning to their limits. The new challenges they pose require new approaches, joining the "hard" tools of construction with the "soft" tools of political, social, cultural and communications interventions. Shrinking Cities: Volume 2: Interventions provides an international overview of experimental concepts for taking action in shrinking cities, cataloguing tools from the fields of ...

Totally amazing unseen puppet photos and info!
I just got this newly published book and it is simply wonderful. I have a huge puppet book library and having just skimmed through it, I am thrilled to see all photos/puppets are ones I've never seen anywhere else. The puppets of Klee are an absolute inspiration, and I am so glad there is a new book that introduces them to a new generation. The only other book about these puppets is in the ...

Beautiful, thought-provoking and utterly magical
I recently discovered Sugimoto's pictures browsing the web. This book is beautifully produced and plate after plate demands not only an aesthetic response from the viewer but also a decidedly intellectual and conceptual one (maybe that's the same thing!). It's rare to find art that is simultaneously so beautiful and so profound.

Unpainted Pictures
Nolde, though sympathetic to the Nazi Party, was included among the artists who were exhibited in the "Degenerate Art Show". He was also banned from painting throughout the war which he spent in the north German town of Seebüll. Being the artist he was he was unable to halt the creative process and began to paint watercolor pictures on small torn sheets of paper - these paintings, the "unpainted ...

overview of the diversity of styles and subjects of contemporary Chinese art
The more than 200 items (out of a total of 1200) from the collection of Uli Sigg, Switzerland's former ambassador to China, make an eclectic selection which convincingly demonstrates that Chinese art is now truly modern and contemporary; although many international art buyers have been aware of this for some time. Chinese art is no longer statist or propagandistic; although remnants of this can ...

A timely retrospective from one of the most referenced visual artists
Having spoken several times with the artist Gregory Crewdson, I'm comfortable in saying that a retrospective of his art is an insight only into his (r)evolutionary techniques and dream narratives. The man himself is a slightly bemused, curious artist with an assured but uncaring knowledge of his impact. A recent panel at Princeton, pitted Gregory against motion pictures' reigning dream narrative ...

a beautiful exhibition
This is the catalogue for a beautiful exhibition that was held at the Beyeler Foundation. Many of the works reproduced are hidden in private collections (e.g. a huge 1958 canvas in black, white and red) and it is great to be able to admire them. Nothing replaces the live experience of being engulfed in a Rothko, standing a short distance from the canvas itself, but this book is undoubtedly a ...

On the island of Naoshima off the picturesque coast of western Japan, Japanese architect Tadao Ando has built a spectacular structure comprised of basic geometric forms. Situated on cliffs overlooking the straits of Seto-Naikai, the building provides a congenial setting for the presentation of numerous undisputed masterpieces of artistic reduction, including several of Claude Monet's incomparable Water Lilies, monumental sculptures by Walter de ...

Hatje Cantz Publishers, 2006
No other subject inspired Henri Matisse with such passion throughout his career as the female figure in interior settings. This is the most comprehensive publication to cover the topic of women in the work of the great regenerator of European painting, and in so doing, it covers the full spectrum of Matisse's creative evolution, from the small, somber, early pictures to the masterly compositions of his Fauvist phase, the intimate pictorial ...

Comprehensive study of the contemporary artist
Ana Mendieta was only in her early 40s when she died in 1985. Born in Havana, Cuba, she came to the U. S. as a political refugee with her family when she was 12. Beginning in her artistic training at the U. of Iowa, she incorporated feminist and multicultural leanings into the conceptual art, land art, photography, and performance art she practiced with equal intensity and innovation. No matter ...

--------------
This is a fine collection of the later work of Agnes Martin. Her work is a great example of how an action becomes something other. No documentation will ever suffice for seeing her work in person, but as these things go this book captures some of her subtleties. I turn to this book at times when I need to be reminded that we can make tender references to perfection.
Nikki S. Lee: Parts
RoseLee Goldberg
Hatje Cantz Publishers, 2006
Korean-born, New York-based conceptual artist Nikki S. Lee once hoped to be an actress. Now she examines the construction and interpretation of identity in works that combine performance and photography. Her acclaimed Projects document her transformation (sometimes drastic) and assimilation into a wide range of subcultures and social and ethnic groups--from sophisticated ladies of the finest Parisian circles to white trash in American trailer ...

Emil Nolde
Hatje Cantz Publishers, 2005
Emil Nolde is regarded as one of the most noteworthy Expressionist painters. Portraits play a prominent role in the artist's oeuvre, particularly those of his early creative period. During those years in which Nolde's art developed to maturity, his painting was enriched by an innovative power that inspired later artists well into the twentieth century. Some 60 of the unparalleled portraits completed by Emil Nolde between 1903 and 1918 are ...

Smart and good-looking
This is a good introduction to the art of Mona Hatoum. The book has several well written texts, an interesting interview, and very good photos. Of course, the kind of work Hatoum makes does not lend itself easily to photography, and inevitably some of the impact is lost (but then again, this could be said for any book on art...). Oh, and it is a very good-looking book.
