Sam Taylor-Wood1 review
Michael Bracewell, Jeremy Millar

Hayward Gallery Publishing, 2002

Light on Content
I was very excited to see that there was a new collection of Sam Taylor-Wood's work available. Unfortunately, this book is extremely disappointing. There are nearly as many pages of text as there are photographs, and very little of Taylor-Wood's work is included. Although the book is inexpensive, you are basically only getting about 20 full page pictures, another 20 pages of tiny pictures on ...

Antony Gormley: Blind Light1 review
W.J.T. Mitchell, Susan Stewart, ...

Hayward Gallery Publishing, 2007

Well done book about an interesting exhibition
This is a very well done book about an interesting exhibition at the Hayward Gallery in London in 2007. The show was extraordinarily popular - do a web search for some articles and reviews. The images, including some multi-page fold outs, do a good job of capturing the scattered works of Event Horizon. Honestly, I didn't think a book could do it, so it was a pleasant surprise. The Amazon ...

Cult Fiction: Art & Comics
Paul Gravett, Laylah Ali, ...

Hayward Gallery Publishing, 2007

The comic book, the cartoon strip and the single-panel gag are recurring motifs in twentieth-century art, providing a platform for narrative, political critique, graphic clarity, and, of course, fun. Cult Fiction: Art & Comics examines the work of artists who produce comics and cartoons as part of their practice, as well as those who employ the language of the comic in their work, borrowing from stylistic sources across high and low culture. ...

Facts of Life: Contemporary Japanese Art
Jonathan Watkins

Hayward Gallery Publishing, 2001

Focusing on works made in the last few years, this book aims to convey the complexity, depth and energy of the visual arts in Japan today, and to reflect the great variety and inventiveness of artistic practice in that country. Facts of Life includes texts by Jonathan Watkins, curator and Director of the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, and Mami Kataoka, Chief Curator at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery. It presents the work of about 25 Japanese artists ...

Robin Rhode: Who Saw Who
Michele Robecchi, James Sey, ...

Hayward Gallery Publishing, 2008

A major new talent on the international art scene, Robin Rhode's art uses the barest of means to comment on urban poverty, the politics of leisure and the commodification of youth cultures. Born in Cape Town and raised in Johannesburg, Rhode has a reputation for brilliantly inventive performances, photography and video animations in which drawing plays a crucial role. In these works, which are often created on the street, Rhode interacts with ...

Rebecca Horn: Bodylandscapes Drawings, Sculptures, Installations 1964-20042 reviews
Doris von Drathen, Rebecca Horn, ...

Hayward Gallery Publishing, 2005

Strong Artist, not comprehensive book.
I was hoping for a more thorough compendium of this powerful artist's work. This book is good, but it's missing some important pieces in Horn's portfolio. Still her work is profound and makes me want to see it all, in person. The art is installation, drawings and performances of a very experiential nature, somewhat akin to Bruce Nauman.

William Blake and Slavery: Mind-forg'd Manacles
David Bindman, Darryl Pinckney, ...

Hayward Gallery Publishing, 2007

The English poet and artist William Blake (1757-1827) was uncommonly aware of the evils of slavery in his time, having illustrated Narrative of a Five Year's Expedition against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam (1791), John Stedman's firsthand account of the brutal suppression of a slave revolt in South America. But for Blake, the interest was not only in physical but mental enslavement. The ubiquity of "mind-forg'd manacles" (as he put it in his ...
