Tremendous Insight into American History
It's been a few years since I read this book, but I still remember it vividly. This autobiographical rememberance of one man's service in Vietnam is quite memorable. Anyone who thinks the U.S. should be sending soldiers to fight in the Middle East and Asia should definitely read this book for perspective. One of the main things I got out of this book was that there are just some wars that not are ...

Full libretto
I've seen Phantom on three continents and love every bit of every show. I wanted a libretto in order to know the lyrics of the pieces with multiple singers/parts. Getting a history of the melodrama with lots of great photos was an added bonus. My book was used but in exactly the condition advertised, arrived as promised, and was WELL WORTH the total cost!

Josh Swiller

A Mother's Nightmare
I found Josh Swiller's riveting and beautifully written account of his Peace Corps service in Eastern Africa impossible to put down. Swiller weaves insight about deafness brilliantly into his story, giving the reader an insider's perspective on being deaf in any and every possible situation. As the mother of a present Peace Corps Volunteer, I couldn't help but imagine how Josh's mother might have ...
Secrets of the Zona Rosa: How Writing (and Sisterhood) Can Change Women's Lives

Rosemary Daniell

An Exhilarating Experience
When you pick up a copy of Secrets of the Zona Rosa, better pick up two or three extra notebooks and a box of pens or pencils because you are about to start writing. It's hard to imagine not getting itchy writing fingers while reading the intriguing titles in the table of contents: "We are all doors until someone slams us," "If I was really wild," and "If I thought like a guy." Rosemary ...

Grammar Girl's Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing
For a book that is a help book, this book is great! It is easy to follow and gives some great information. I am glad that it is in book form now! I highly recommend this book, especially to those who have been out of school for quite a while like myself and have forgotten a lot of these grammar rules!
The Tristan Chord: Wagner and Philosophy

Bryan Magee
Holt Paperbacks, 2002
The Schopenhauer Chord
Bryan Magee writes with enthusiasm and clarity. He's particularly good at explaining philosophy in layman's terms. According to Magee, Wagner was the most erudite of all the great composers, and his philosophical beliefs profoundly effected his compositions. His intellectual life can be broken into two main periods: the early, one of political radicalism and activism, and the late, one of ...
The Last Men Out: Life on the Edge at Rescue 2 Firehouse

The last men out
This book is a great book. I love the way that they start it. They start by telling a story of a Firefighter from the early days. In the book Last Men Out they do a very good job of being realistic to the way firefighters act and conduct their task. In the book when they respond to calls they are very good with making it seem like it is in real life. Also when they are talking about rivalry all ...

THIS BOOK CHANGED MY LIFE FOR A WHILE BUT NOW I'M 34
Subway Art. What can I say? This, Style Wars, Beat Street, Break Dance... they all had their influence on me (& a whole generation) back in the day. Hip Hop isn't what it used to be, though. Most of what we hear these days is mixed up with R'n'B, commercialised, repackaged and shipped for your dissatisfaction. If you ask me... when it comes to Hip Hop, stick with the old school. I was ...

Helpful, informative and worthy of your time.
Clear, concise and poignant. I particularly like the diet and supplement section, along with the fact that this book is not stuck in a time-warp and is updated regularly with current standards of treatment (I couldn't help but notice people started posting reviews back in 1998 and I have a late 2007 version). This is just what I needed to help me understand/get through what is going on, why ...

Carl Safina
Holt Paperbacks, 1999
Absolute poetry
I'm only about halfway through this book, but it's so moving that I decided I needed to rave now. Carl Safina uses an amazing grasp of language to paint mental pictures of what he writes about. I work in the scientific community and have spent a lot of time on that water, and his writings are not only objective and scientifically sound, he constructs them in such a way that they are beautiful. ...

Tibor Fischer
Holt Paperbacks, 1997
Sorry for the cliche, but you'll laugh & you'll cry...
I don't remember how I came across this book in the first place, but by the second page I was laughing out loud, read the whole thing in one sitting and immediately went back to the beginning and started reading again. Why's it so good? First of all, it's packed with Fischer's unique sense of humor. Read the first couple sample pages; if you're not laughing, you probably won't enjoy the rest ...
John Adams: A Life

John Ferling
Holt Paperbacks, 1996
A Very Human Perspective
After reading both David McCullough's biography of Adams and now this one, I have concluded that Ferling's is the better of the two. The main reason is that although McCullough's is slightly more extensive, Ferling's book has a much more realistic view of the man. As his book Almost a Miracle shows the many tactical mistakes that Washington made, this book does the same with Adams. It makes ...
John Marshall: Definer of a Nation

Jean Edward Smith
Holt Paperbacks, 1998
Judging Marshall
This was great biography of the chief justice. It achieved that rare balance in historical biographies of being loaded with lots of interesting details while not being too dry to enjoy. As usual in the better biographies, the author is definitely in Marshall's corner, but he includes some of Marshall's botches and does an OK job of explaining why his opponents disagreed with him. The greatest ...
