Definitely history come alive...
I won't repeat too much of the praise already heaped upon this book, other than to say it is well deserved. Hopkirk has a very engaging writing style that makes it very difficult to put the book down. Just a few notes: - Hopkirk does a good job of staying on topic in a book that encompasses many regions and personalities. Often this means he has choosen to not take certain stories to ...

Possibly the best Kanji dictionary out there
Though it lacks a stroke-index for searching the characters, this is possibly the best Kanji dictionary available for foreign students interested in Japanese. Very complete and organized, and it's exclusive SKIP method is extremely efficient; I dare say it's the best way I've come across of listing and finding Kanji, once you get used to it (previous knowledge of how to draw and count strokes ...

I like Takuan's Zen...
...I'd like to meet him. But not in a duel. The title of the book is appropriate. Do not park your mind. Zen is a no-parking zone. It is alright to park your tail on a cushion, though. To understand this book, you need to be a bit of a martial artist, and a bit of a zennist to begin with. Not for beginners, or for those who like their gruel thin.

Essential Tokyo Guide
This was my "go to" book on our trip to Japan. One of the most useful features was being able to determine which door to take when exiting a subway station -as many of them are huge and have many exits. This saved us a bit of time. The subway/train map was also very helpful.

Want extra exercises? This is the one.
Do you own or plan to buy the "Japanese for Busy People I: Revised 3rd Edition" either in romanized or kana version? If you do, this is a pretty good choice if you want to do more exercises along with the lessons learned from the "Japanese for Busy People I". This workbook only provides more dialogue and listening exercises. Do not expect to see any grammar tips, culture notes, or even kana. If ...

THE BEST JAPANESE LANGUAGE DICTIONARY FOR BEGINNERS
I worn out my first copy of this dictionary during my 15 months as a Japanese Language student in Tokyo because I even used it when I went shopping. And I just bought a second. This may be the best Japanese-English English-Japanese Dictionary for beginning to intermediate students of Japanese (including the popular and far more expensive denki jisho), and actually, because of it's functional ...

Fine Summary of Advanced Level Bonsai
This is a fine work on Advanced Techniques for the Bonsai enthusiast, in particular giving full particulars on specialty tools and pruning shears in Bonsai Culture. It is kind of surprising the great tips one can get, from just the one paragraph tips that the authors son added after his father death. Very concise and precise is a great summary for this book.

From Osaka With Love
This is the only Japanese cookbook you will ever need. As other reviewers have already mentioned, it is indeed "the Bible of Japanese cooking." A little bit about me, I first feel in love with Japanese cooking at the age of 8, when for my birthday, my parents took me to Joto's Japanese restaurant and I tried Sukiyaki. The sauce was to die for. The sauce won me over more than the ingredients ...

Well designed book, but don't think it's going to be easy to learn this language if you are a normal person. It's as good a way to study as you are likely to find, but you are going to need some other support from a native speaker.
Izakaya: The Japanese Pub Cookbook

I love this cookbook
Some of my favorite memories of Japan are from cooking in an izakaya. I apprenticed under the local master, learning traditional izakaya cooking and bringing some of my Northwest sensibilities to the menu. It was a fantastic experience, and I often wish I was there still, standing behind the charcoal grill, taking orders and cooking directly for the customer, reaching inside the tanks to pull ...

A wondrous and highly satisfying novel
I read Musashi 15 years ago, and I remember it vividly. It's such a sweeping, wondrous novel, I'm surprised it's not more famous than it is. I became a bit of a Yoshikawa fan from this, and visited his home, preserved as a museum, outside Tokyo. A beautiful serene place. Musashi, in retrospect, was highly inspirational to me as a writer, in terms of pacing, character development, and raw ...

Miyamoto Musashi

Business and Martial Arts
The book written by the samurai warrior Miyamoto Musashi circa 1645 is considered a classic treatise on military strategy, and it enjoys an audience considerably broader than only that of martial artists: for instance, some business leaders find its discussion of conflict and taking the advantage to be relevant to their work. The term "Ichi School", which is referred to in the book, Go Rin No ...

Greasing the transition from intermediate to advanced...
This book is lots of fun. Rubin is witty, his turns of phrase are memorable, and overall the book will certainly put a smile on your face. It's only useful once you've been studying Japanese for a couple of years, though. Before then, it'll go over your head. I mean, I can only wish for the day when figuring out the passive-causative is the biggest problem I have in Japanese. I bet ...
