Classic BC/O Primer
I'd already owned all of the Bloom County and Outland books, this being my last purchase. I had seen it in the bookstore when it was published, but figured I already had the strips contained therein - why spend the extra money? I happened one day to be flipping through the book when I read the introduction, specifically the first page of said intro. There, in color bolder than life, was a ...

Step by step analysis of basic stroke errors with photos
A gem of a book, almost a tennis textbook of the basic stroke errors and how to fix them. It's a troubleshooters guide that can sit on your bookshelf or you can read and re-read to prevent basic errors. The photo illustrations are great-taken from Braden's extensive video collections. I took a yellow marker to this book and highlighted the relevant tips to burn them in my brain. I need ...

Bloom County: The Beginning
Here you will find the beginning of one of the most inspired comic strips ever put to paper. No other strip made me laugh as hard, or as often, as "Bloom County". In fact, pretty much nothing else in the whole wide world made me laugh as hard as this divine creation of Mr. Berke Breathed. Here we are introduced to the Milo Bloom, Steve Dallas, Cutter John and by far the best-known comic ...
Politically, Fashionably, and Aerodynamically Incorrect: The First Outland Collection (Bloom County)

Actually.... 4 1/2 stars, but I can't choose that....
This is the first Outland collection, and Berkeley Breathed writes in the introduction: "I'm proud of the 'toons in this book. I had more fun drawing many of these than usual. As in Bloom County usual. Look at the earlier Outlands reproduced here. You can see me playing, experimenting, even doodling, looking for unexplored nooks and creative crannies. But when I look at these myself, I smile ...

Jacob Bronowski
Little Brown & Co (P), 1976
Inspired many copiers but is still the best...
Previous reviews don't do Bronowski justice. He began as a mathematician; but after being sent to Hiroshima, as part of a team studying the aftereffects of the nuclear blast, he switched to biology. He was warm and articulate. A poet himself, he was one of the few people who truly understood the English poet William Blake, although (unlike most of his writing) his essays about Blake could use ...

The Way We Were, 1987 Edition...
In 1987, America's obsessions included the Iran-Contra affair, the NFL players' strike, the peculiar pecadilloes of televangelists and the effect they had on their "flocks," and the impending election of a new President from a crop of unlikely candidates. It is this America that Berke Breathed took a snapshot of, and is thus preserved for the ages within the pages of this, the sixth collection ...

Bob Thomson

An all time favorite
In my periodic attempts to grow vegetables, this book -- and its predecessor, "Crockett's Victory Garden," have been my constant and favorite companions. It's past time for this 1987 book to be updated and republished. This is Cadillac gardening as Crockett and his successor Bob Thomson apparently had a large budget, a full toolshed, and endless time to produce a perfect garden. My pitiful ...

Berke Breathed

One of the best of the Bloom County collections.
Which is interesting, considering that it's very late in the run of the series, and for the most part, the earlier strips are funnier. But this one's the exception to that rule; most of the political satire here is as relevant today as it was 16-17 years ago, and just as funny.

Why did he do it?
Why do all the great ones do it? Berke Breathed, Bill watterson, Gary Larson. Al the great cartoonists quit when there's lots of stuff left to cover! All the boring strips (Dennis the Menace, Garfield, Family Circus) must remain. Dilbert is Pretty good, but Scott Adams can never live up to the artistic and comedic talent of Berke Breathed. I wish Mr. Breathed would AT LEAST do another ...

Johnny, I Wish I Knew Ye
The book "Johnny, We Hardly Knew Ye" by Kenneth O'Donnell and David Powers offers a wide variety of information about the life of John F. Kennedy. Focusing on his political life, with which they were deeply involved, the authors give a perspective on the life of President Kennedy that can't be matched by many others, for not many others knew him as well as they did. Unlike a normal, relatively ...

spectacular consumer's guide to HVAC
a spectacularly informative consumer's guide to HVAC systems. My definitive guide when deciding what equipment to install to replace the 50 year old boiler and water heater in my home. Local professionals provided little of the content in 1999 of what Trethewey wrote in 1993 about providing for an energy efficient and money saving house.

William F. Buckley

Not your everyday parachute adventure.
Buckley at his most relaxed. The book chronicles a trans-atlantic crossing under sail, starting with insuring that the ship is seaworthy, through picking the crew and plotting the course to the "mundane" aspects of a sea advdnture. Along the way one has the rare chance to observe a crew interacting spontaneously. The use of the ship's log to aid in the revealing the details and even the ...

fire your coach!
What a fantastic book! I've owned it for just two weeks, and have already seen huge improvements in my game, first by switching from the "natural" Continental to an Eastern forehand grip, and then by practicing Vic's recommendations on the serve until it finally ... clicked. We're talking about a 200% percent improvement on these strokes, and a corresponding improvement in my match scores. ...

insight of a genius
This book is so good that I should have stolen it from the library when I had the chance. Unfortunately I hadn't expected such a gem to be out of print. (By the time I got back somebody else had beat me to it, but I know where to look for him- watch out for the guy carrying it under his arm at the next Wimbledon championships). I raised my game from embarrasssing novice to passable ...

Bloom County Rides off into the sunset...
Happy Trails begins with Opus deciding to get an illegal back-alley liposuction of his nose, and ends with him saying "Good-bye" to all of the familiar faces and places of Bloom County on the way to the sequel "Outland". On the pages that intervene Berkeley Breathed gets in some hilarious and dead-on pokes at religious fanatics, Donald Trump, Swimsuit Editions, and phone solicitors. Not quite as ...

If ever there was a reluctant hero...
The first time I ever picked up a Bloom County book at a bookstore in the mall...and this was the book. After a few pages, I found myself having to close the book in order to gather my wits about me, wipe the tears off my face, then attempt to forge farther ahead...usually having to immediately close the book because glancing at the same page instantly initiated another wave of helpless ...
Penguin Dreams and Stranger Things (A Bloom County Book)

Priceless and timeless humour
Although perhaps not the best introduction to the characters of Bloom County, this book will please fans of Opus, Steve Dallas and the rest. Opus heads off to the South Pole, Steve Dallas becomes a sex gargoyle but still doesn't get the girl and the 'roaches continue to cause trouble. Despite it's vintage, Bloom County continues to appeal and it looks just as good from both sides of the ...

visually assaulting, always intriguing
A warning: If you are looking for an easy-to-read book to enjoy on a nice afternoon or before bed, this is not for you. While the content of "U2 Faraway So Close" is nothing short of absolutely fascinating, the book's layout is highly stylized and can be visually assaulting and rather difficult to read. BUT... If you want fabulous pictures and fun, often hilarious, anecdotes about the ...
