Allyn & Bacon Guide to Writing, The (5th Edition) (MyCompLab Series)7 reviews
John D. Ramage, John C. Bean, ...

Longman, 2008

Still a better buy
I tried to buy a used text for a few dollars less. The guy didn't know what he was doing and advertised and sent the wrong book! I didn't want to take any chances this time since classes had already been underway for 3 weeks. Bought the new text, still $20 cheaper than the campus bookstore and recieved it in 4 days with regular ground shipping.

Culture War? The Myth of a Polarized America (Great Questions in Politics Series) (2nd Edition)17 reviews
Morris P. Fiorina, Samuel J. Abrams, ...

Longman, 2005

A must read for life the modern voter.
This book was an assignment for my political science class, and I started it believing, as most do, that America was a deeply divided nation of red and blue states. However, this book brilliantly shattered my views by just giving me the data without too much political rhetoric behind it. While some reviewers believe the author is a demonstrably biased "red-stater" I think that regardless of ...

Writing Arguments: A Rhetoric with Readings (7th Edition)4 reviews
John D. Ramage, John C. Bean, ...

Longman, 2006

Thoughtful, articulate, and readable rhetoric.
"Writing Arguments" shines like a beacon in the dark and murky waters of composition textbooks. Although some have critiqued it for its "passive" approach, I support both the approach and the layout as the best way I've found to approach basic argumentation. A solid understanding of audience (in particular) is vital for successful writing, and it's also something inexperienced, self-focused ...

The Art of the Short Story6 reviews
Dana Gioia, R. S. Gwynn

Longman, 2005

Best of the Best, with Commentary
This book's title and subtitle are a good summary for a book I feel belongs every creative writing class and on the desk of every aspiring writer. And for only $18.95 USD for 926 pages, the book is a bargain. If you've recently purchased books for a college class, you will know what I mean, I've paid upwards of $100 for a book. The Art of the Short Story is an anthology of the best stories ...

The Elements of Style, Fourth Edition385 reviews
William Strunk Jr., E. B. White

Longman, 1999

Derek's Review of The Elements of Style
I find this is an excellent reference book on writing. Strunk builds on the principles which White first introduced and offers the reader a pseudo primer on the syntax of english language and structure. I purchased this book after my instructor stressed "I pick up a copy". You'll find the book easy to read and incorporate into everyday use. I strongly recommend it!

Essence of Decision: Explaining the Cuban Missile Crisis (2nd Edition)12 reviews
Graham T. Allison, Philip Zelikow

Longman, 1999

Impressive Scholarship
A great number of books and articles has been published attempting to explore and explain the Cuban missile crisis that had brought the world to the brink of a thermonuclear world war. Allison and Zelikow, in Essence of Decision, explain the Cuban missile crisis through three different lenses, that is, The Rational Actor Paradigm, Organizational Behavior Paradigm and Governmental Politics ...

Writing Fiction: A Guide to Narrative Craft45 reviews
Janet Burroway, Elizabeth Stuckey-French

Longman, 2006

Excellent Resource
I took a writing class several years ago and this was required reading. I found it to be a great resource. It is very simply organized and well written. The author gives some excellent examples that become quite memorable. After college, I had misplaced my book. I loved it so much that I ordered another copy from Amazon. If you want just the basics on creative writing, this would be a ...

The Little, Brown Handbook (10th Edition) (MyCompLab Series)47 reviews
H. Ramsey Fowler, Jane E. Aaron

Longman, 2006

Great Gift for the College Bound High School Senior
I would highly recommend this book as a graduation present for any high school senior who is headed to college. It is an invaluable reference, and covers almost any writing style that college professors will ask for. If you are taking courses in many different disciplines, it is very important to have this as you navigate your way through parenthical references versus footnotes versus endnotes, ...

Literature: An Introduction to Fiction, Poetry, Drama, and Writing, Compact Edition (5th Edition) ...6 reviews
X. J. Kennedy, Dana Gioia

Longman, 2006

The one by which all others are measured
The first review of this textbook is extremely misleading. This is THE most popular textbook in the country for Introduction to Literature courses. While the Norton is certainly popular too, it is not the "standard." Furthermore, the literature examples in the book are copious, varied and extremely well chosen. All periods and types of the genres are represented, and the headnotes are ...

Curious Researcher, The (6th Edition) (MyCompLab Series)9 reviews
Bruce Ballenger

Longman, 2008

Excellent Research Text
Easy to teach from and the students say that they both learn from it and enjoy it. Most intend to keep the book to refer back to. It is my first choice for a research writing class text.

Writing: A Guide for College and Beyond (MyCompLab Series)4 reviews
Lester Faigley

Longman, 2006

One of the better textbooks out there
Some textbooks make you feel like editing them before you can read them; they are overdone with long, drawn-out drivel, as though the authors got paid by the word count. This is not one of them. The information is presented in a clear, non-boring, progressive way that anyone can follow. It uses many examples to illustrate the message they are trying to communicate. (OK, some of the sample ...

Style: The Basics of Clarity and Grace (3rd Edition)3 reviews
Joseph M. Williams

Longman, 2008

Great resource for writers and editors
I wish I had this book five years ago when I was starting out as a copy editor at my college newspaper. In this abridged version of the text, Williams provides guidelines and techniques as to how to revise problematic sentences. He dissects the problems in a clear fashion and leads the reader through the process of editing through the problems. It takes only a few hours to read, but sessions ...

The Longman Reader, 8th Edition2 reviews
Judith Nadell, John Langan, ...

Longman, 2007

Longman Reader, The (8th Edition)
This book is really great for getting on the go with writing. I am using it in my College Writing class and I just love the way that it presents its topics. It breaks down all the steps for writing a great essay and why you do it. Then it also shows different examples, both of ameatuer writers and professional writers, which makes this book and it's context easier to apply to the reader's own ...

Little, Brown Essential Handbook (6th Edition)2 reviews
Jane E. Aaron

Longman, 2007

Little Brown Handbook
This book came in excellent condition and is going to be very helpful with the course I am taking. I like the way it breaks down all the aspects of good grammar and punctuation, especially the examples. This book will make my writing papers even easier for me. I really didn't need to know too much about this particular product as this book was already on the list for what I will need in my ...

Consider Ethics: Theory, Readings, and Contemporary Issues (2nd Edition)4 reviews
Bruce N. Waller

Longman, 2007

Excellent text gets better
This already excellent text written by philosophy professor Dr.Bruce N.Waller just got better. It is an excellent choice as an introductory text in this field or for those of us who just want to understand the ethics not only of classical philosphical problems but of everyday challenges in our shared life in society. Waller uses a very readable style to explain the nature of these issues along ...

Agendas, Alternatives, and Public Policies (Longman Classics Edition) (2nd Edition) (Longman Classics in ...7 reviews
John W. Kingdon

Longman, 2002

Good theory, easy to read
Kingdon has produced an innovative and useful theory of the policy process. This book is clearly not intended for the lay reader, but for political scientists and policy specialists interested in theorizing about policy formation. Kingdon's writing style is somewhat formal, and at times stiff, but the book is easy to get through. Kingdon provides many concrete examples of the ideas he ...
